I read an academic article on Jero in the context of representation of black people in Japanese media. He's of Japanese heritage (growing up in Pittsburgh and basically listening to his Japanese Grandmother's enka records and loving the genre) and his popularity, while definitely still couched in Japanese understanding of black people (i.e. nothing), it's still cool how much people genuinely like his singing.

What I find particularly interesting about Jero is the fact that, despite his modern "hip hop" image, his music is pretty much straight forward Enka. He's not a crossover artist by any means; he sounds just like any other "I sing for crowds of senior citizens" Enka artist, yet young people still love him.

It's as if Cowboy Troy dropped the rap, started dressing like Jay-Z, sang Hank Williams and Carter Family tunes, and got huge because of it!

I coulda sworn I put a Jero video up on 73Q but I can't find it.

He's a genuinely good singer embracing and revitalizing a classic style of music which has been falling out of favor in its home country, plus his back story is adorable.

The poeTV/73Q search is useless. It's hard as hell to find and I very nearly duped your entry. (that's a great video, BTW. Too kaleidoscopic enka for 73Q!)
