The whole "everyone repeat what I say" thing is perhaps the single stupidest public speaking technique. If you participate in it you deserve whatever idiocy you end up saying.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-10-12

This video's title borrows the silliest line from Zizek's whole speech, which is really unfair. He said about a hundred other quotable things, but the lowest common denominator has to jump on the sex with animals thing.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-10-12

From a communications point of view, it's an intriguing development, but I agree... it is rather silly. Almost a Python level of silly.

baleen - 2011-10-12

That's because people aren't allowed to talk.

BroodMother - 2011-10-12

they have no permit for public speaking. who knew you needed one, right? so they aren't allowed to electronically modify their voices, which made it so they must use their human megaphone. seems quite evil to me to not allow megaphone usage.

godot - 2011-10-12

There's absolutely no reason they can't line up some streaming audio webcast/wi-fi. If they can't legally erect a public loudspeaker, there's no reason the hundred's attending can't listen in on smartphones some with boomboxes.

A low power FM transmitter would also do the trick, if a questionable legally. Better yet, WBAI could broadcast during larger events.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-10-12

What happened to the old fashioned paper cone, I wonder?

Ursa_minor - 2011-10-12

The YT comments.

fedex - 2011-10-12

what are we WAITING for, amirite?!

gmol - 2011-10-12

I really am concerned with Zizek's basic grasp of science.

The last time he talked about some mysterious catastrophe that gave us oil.

Here, he states that "you can become immortal by biogenetics" (? is there an abiogenetics?).

Unless he's talking about mammalian cell cultures, it simply isn't true. We don't really have any real therapies at all that are genetically based yet (well, you might count that total bone marrow transplant, still...), let alone ones that are targeted towards increasing longevity.

Konversekid - 2011-10-12

He's talking about how the media, or the expressions by capitalistic society, say that in terms of technological advancement anything is possible but social change is not feasible. He's trying to express how absurd this notion of eternal capitalistic advancement is, and that real social change can happen.

gmol - 2011-10-13

ah, that makes sense.

As soon as I saw the body langauge, I knew it was Slavoj Zizek. He is the funniest man alive. He is the Larry David of political theory.

chumbucket - 2011-10-12

Zizek is great but this excerpt is useless. I'm thinking the human megaphone needs to evolve into something like a Greek Chorus up there with the speaker. Or maybe just the Muppets.

memedumpster - 2011-10-12

Done with the Fox News Teabagger levels of butthurt over the human megaphone. For fuck's sake, stop being retards and participate in your goddamned country.

memedumpster - 2011-10-12

Meant to be a reply, dang.

Change - 2011-10-12

Five for the exact same reasons.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-12

It's an interesting tactic against the inevitable demagoguery that could occur.
