does the fact that I could only identify about a dozen of the songs make me old and out of touch? Hopefully the fact that I enjoyed this immensely will make up for that.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-10-18

Don't worry. I'm 22 and I only picked out the Daft Punk song. Songs? ... I'm have unique musical tastes though, so... no surprise there.

wtf japan - 2011-10-18

Quit trainspottin'.

Cube - 2011-10-18

It sounds like there's a clip from The Buggles' Video Killed The Radio Star.

HotwaxNinjaPanther - 2011-10-18

It's almost like he wrote the music. Oh wait, no he didn't. Other people recorded and produced that 3-chord derivative electronic crap. And then the kid's beat-detecting software did most of the other work.

Well at least it taught him how to use the software so he'll be prepared for the day when he writes some actual music.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-10-18

By all means please post the link to this "beat-detecting software" that can isolate vocal and background tracks of multiple genres of music and combine them automatically into a single song. Tell you what, if you make an equivalent song in the next two weeks, I'll send you a cash prize. You can even just limit yourself to the "3-chord derivative crap" that is Daft Punk, which makes it extra easy.

fourthguy - 2011-10-18

Are you fucking kidding me.

badideasinaction - 2011-10-18

Proving once again KLF's "The Manual" is still the most prescient piece of writing on popular music.

I just hope this kid doesn't waste all his talent up his nose or something.

kwash - 2011-10-18

Innocent Bystander - 2011-10-18

I don't think that this is super awesome in anything but a technical way but you really have no clue what you're on about.

Harveyjames - 2011-10-18

The funniest thing about Hot Wax Ninja Panther's comment is that we can actually we exactly how much work the kid is doing, in the video. It's a lot! Skillful and rhythmic and creative button pressing, over a wide sample bank he's prepared himself. Both hands are occupied at all times.

'Pfft. The computer is doing all the work, you guys! Real men are content for their creative legacy to be writing stultifying ill-considered comments on the internet'

dr_rock - 2011-10-18

He's using Ableton Live by the way, which gives you a grid of samples to trigger. His Novation Launchpad (the lighty-button grid) maps to Ableton to trigger the loops, giving a tactile interface. I have both, but not for the same reasons he does. This is definitely to be considered a DJ set, but this kid is fucking amazing at using it as an instrument. I was floored. HotwaxNinjaPanther is an ill-informed douche.

The Townleybomb - 2011-10-18

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all this crap would sound the same even if I cared.

zerobackup - 2011-10-18

Kick ass song, but now on to more important matters...I WANT THAT FUCKING TRIGGER PAD.

memedumpster - 2011-10-18

This is easily the best Star Trek fanfilm ever.

kwash - 2011-10-18

I love you.

Squeamish - 2011-10-20

Not bad. Better than I could do at his age - or, hell, even now.

Damn kids being good at things.
