Anaxagoras - 2011-10-17

Yeah... it's not really evil. Just sad.

The Mothership - 2011-10-17

is uncomfortable with this.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2011-10-17

One article I read said people were warning about the shape of the track being dangerous for this kind of race but didn't elaborate. Anyone know what that was all about?

jangbones - 2011-10-17

Formula 1 (open-wheel cars) races on "road courses". A typical course has like ten different turns, and the skill comes in carefully weaving through the course. Speeds reach 200mph, but only for extremely short bursts of time before the driver has to brake to complete the next turn. Contact is infrequent and the cars are not designed for it.

NASCAR (stock cars) races on ovals. Long straightaways, four turns. High speeds are sustained. Contact is much more frequent, but stock cars are designed for beating and banging.

The IndyCar circuit is open wheel cars racing mostly on ovals. It features sustained periods of high speeds and more contact.

Jimmie Johnson is right, IndyCar should not race on ovals as frequently as they do. Its too fucking dangerous.

SolRo - 2011-10-17

even F1 is researching jet-style cockpit canopies to increase driver safety.

IndyCar is just plain stupid with the car design/track layout, this kind of crash is inevitable and none of the cars safety features work once in the elastic catch fence.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2011-10-18

So you mean if a group of people compete to their fullest abilities some will lose horrifically and one will win? The other riders should occupy the oval and it morphs.

Pussies.

FIVE.

Burnov - 2011-10-17

Is it bad that the first thing that went through my head as the car went airborne is the little ditty that plays when you complete a stage on Mario64?

"Doodledadoodledootdoot HERE WE GOOOOOO!"

Jellyneck - 2011-10-17

Yes, you sound like an emotionally stunted man-baby.

Burnov - 2011-10-17

Well, I was expecting more invective than that, but you'll do. Lol.

fatatty - 2011-10-17

We do so love to watch ourselves burn...

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-10-17

I don't really get why people cry and mourn when this kind of thing happens. It's kind of like being shocked when your father who's been smoking for 60 years goes to the doctor and finds out he has lung cancer.

Isn't that the whole point of this, Nascar, and all these other kinds of racing? It's so damn boring it can't be because of the race as usual, it has to be because everyone is waiting to see what kind of deathly accidents are in store.

Or did The Simpsons lie to me?

jangbones - 2011-10-17

Some people like racing because they admire competition, strategy, performance, and human achievement.

Racing is a beautiful sport but it can be very dangerous. The danger is an unfortunate side-effect of competing that close to the edge, not the allure.

Anyway, NASCAR implemented a lot of significant safety improvements, and no one has died, or even gotten seriously injured, in ten years.

Pompoulus - 2011-10-18

zerobackup - 2011-10-18

Digital fire can still burn you.

Jeriko-1 - 2011-10-18

I'm not liking how that looked like a spray of blood at the end.

Ursa_minor - 2011-10-18

Well, it wasn't a spray of blood.
