Yes, this is justice. If you have to ask that question, take notes: an evil shitstain being killed by the very people he oppressed & terrorized is justice by almost any definition.

At the same time, I'm not sure what jangbones is complaining about. Most people in this country *are* taking pleasure in the fact that Qaddaffi has been brought to some sort of justice. What some object to is the brutal nature of the justice, which seems like a good thing to me; we're becoming more civilized and less bloodthirsty. Well... most of us are, anyways.

When I say "brought to justice", I mean try in a fair court, and not just torture and slaughter the dude. I'm glad a savage despot is out of power but doesn't everyone, even the worst of us, deserve a day in court?

Nuremberg taught the world a lot of things about the human condition and the nature of the Second World War. It was a small glimmer of positive gleaned from that horrendous tragedy. If that was today, the powers that be would indiscriminately hang every single Nazi without bothering to try them or to learn anything from them, and the citizenry would cheer it and clamor for more blood.

How does a civilization become less and less civilized?

This is America, where fifty million people hate those people for not being white and laments the passing of the dictator their heroes installed to oppress them. We seem more civilized in the past because we straight up lie our asses off about our own history.

I think most would like to have seen him brought to justice. But he was in the hands of a bunch of rebels who had spent the past 6 months killing and being shot at by this guy's men. And who all have memories of friends and family members tortured and killed by this guy's police force.

I guess I'm just saying it's hard to expect restraint from these guys, and I can hardly blame our media for not chastising his death more strongly given that. And I think the American media is more reveling in his downfall than how it took place.

fatatty's got the key right there. It would have been really fantastic to see him to to the Hague to stand trial, but that was really unlikely given all the hate he'd worked up. His death - and the deaths of all such dictators - end up being a sort of exorcism for the people. "The monster is dead."

Well I am not very learned on this topic, but I do feel comfortable saying that anyone who declares anything to be a 'morally righteous event' needs a good backhand slap in the face.

I think they're much less likely to bite the hand that feeds them than Iraq. For one, we didn't send troops in to fight for them, and we helped them militarily at their request. From what I've heard the anti-Gaddafi forces are very pro American at this point, much more than any other country in the region. As long as we don't attempt to install a puppet leader, or take their oil without giving anything back to the people, we could end up with a very powerful ally in the region.

And if we just sit back and hope that brutal dictators all eventually die or reform themselves we'll never get anywhere. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

A minimal presence of an established religion in a government doesn't automatically make it "Secular." When the head of the state rejects democracy, sets up the system so that he is the center of it, demands "worship" from his own people, then proceeds to create his own "holy book" which is then required reading for the entire populace (The Green Book) I would say that's about as un-secular as you can get without invoking a monotheism as your authority (which Gadaffi might as well have done).
I think it was rash and savage to murder him like that, but then I remember that this was the man directly responsible for the Lockerbie Bombing and I don't feel as bad.

They should have. Unfortunately there are lots of 'should haves.'

The grim thought is how many of them would have actually survived a trial by jury on their crimes, were they to be known.

But isn't that true of everybody? We're all guilty of something, some of us have crimes that are write large and span decades and millions of people, and some of us forget to be kind and rewind.

I suppose this is where I could say "That's why Christianity is the religion for me!" but I won't. I can't. I'm not cheering Qaddafi's death, and I hope nobody cheers mine. Lord knows that I'm just as guilty as he.

Calling it a "snuff movie" is probably a bit unfair (except for perhaps how our media repeats it ad nauseum). Libyans probably really needed some sort of visual proof that he was, in fact, dead.

You can be irritated or offended or whatever, but "snuff" - watching someone die as a form of entertainment - may or may not be something that applies to this video. That's a contextual issue with the viewer and not necessarily the pointed goal of the clip in question.

I'm a grownup, and it's not like it's some sort of blatant exploitation or "snuff" clip as I was kinda trying to say earlier in another thread. In this case it just is, and that sort of context is up to the viewer.

As an adult and legal citizen in a supposedly free society, I should have the choice to view anything I damn well please.

So yeah, if I don't want to watch it I won't. I should still have the choice. More please.
