Cell phones are amazing devices.

CornOnTheCabre - 2011-10-23

CNN was showing this at like, 3PM, over and over again.

It's just so inspirational that our nation's crippling puritanical mores will always be overcome by our love of watching evil people slowly bleed to death.

fatatty - 2011-10-23

In a choice between boobs and blood, American television will always choose blood.

mouser - 2011-10-23

I don't see no Cheney or Bush bleeding yet.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-10-24

True, but rarely have I seen such an enormous pair of boobs.

Ursa_minor - 2011-10-23

I'm gonna show this to my kids so that they don't become eccentric, tyrannical despots themselves.

Pillager - 2011-10-24

1001st lesson of being an Evil Overlord:

Know when to flee to a neutral country with all your ill gotten loot.

memedumpster - 2011-10-23

I thought I would feel uncomfortable and a bit ashamed watching this, but I don't. In fact, when I imagined the Koch brothers getting the same treatment I got an erection.

Rovin - 2011-10-23

There's another video out there of Libyan rebels around the body grabbing the head by the hair and yanking it around.

memedumpster - 2011-10-23

Okay, now I feel bad. Thank you.

Screwtape - 2011-10-23

They were just answering the age-old question of whether or not it was a weave.

Maru - 2012-09-20

You're alright, memedumpster.

TeenerTot - 2011-10-23

Yeah, I don't think I want to see this.
I'm glad he's gone of course, but I just can't take delight in the details.

TheSupafly - 2011-10-23

That is my sentiment. Better off dead, don't want to watch him die.

jangbones - 2011-10-23

Fifty years ago we would take pleasure in bringing dudes like this to justice. What happened?

takewithfood - 2011-10-23

This is justice?

memedumpster - 2011-10-23

Fifty years ago installed men like this to power.

CornOnTheCabre - 2011-10-23

we matured.

Anaxagoras - 2011-10-23

Yes, this is justice. If you have to ask that question, take notes: an evil shitstain being killed by the very people he oppressed & terrorized is justice by almost any definition.

At the same time, I'm not sure what jangbones is complaining about. Most people in this country *are* taking pleasure in the fact that Qaddaffi has been brought to some sort of justice. What some object to is the brutal nature of the justice, which seems like a good thing to me; we're becoming more civilized and less bloodthirsty. Well... most of us are, anyways.

jangbones - 2011-10-23

When I say "brought to justice", I mean try in a fair court, and not just torture and slaughter the dude. I'm glad a savage despot is out of power but doesn't everyone, even the worst of us, deserve a day in court?

Nuremberg taught the world a lot of things about the human condition and the nature of the Second World War. It was a small glimmer of positive gleaned from that horrendous tragedy. If that was today, the powers that be would indiscriminately hang every single Nazi without bothering to try them or to learn anything from them, and the citizenry would cheer it and clamor for more blood.

How does a civilization become less and less civilized?

memedumpster - 2011-10-23

This is America, where fifty million people hate those people for not being white and laments the passing of the dictator their heroes installed to oppress them. We seem more civilized in the past because we straight up lie our asses off about our own history.

fatatty - 2011-10-23

I think most would like to have seen him brought to justice. But he was in the hands of a bunch of rebels who had spent the past 6 months killing and being shot at by this guy's men. And who all have memories of friends and family members tortured and killed by this guy's police force.

I guess I'm just saying it's hard to expect restraint from these guys, and I can hardly blame our media for not chastising his death more strongly given that. And I think the American media is more reveling in his downfall than how it took place.

Rovin - 2011-10-23

fatatty's got the key right there. It would have been really fantastic to see him to to the Hague to stand trial, but that was really unlikely given all the hate he'd worked up. His death - and the deaths of all such dictators - end up being a sort of exorcism for the people. "The monster is dead."

bopeton - 2011-10-23

Did he died?

jangbones - 2011-10-23

oh, weeg

Burnov - 2011-10-23

He wasn't even remotely as bad as Saddam Hussein, and yet somehow this is some morally righteous event?

He was one of the few people who ran a generally secular government in the middle east, you now have two options for future government in libya and both look extraordinarily shitty and bring their own unique problems.

I don't know how people after seeing the horrendous mess made of Iraq can think dismantling this country is going to end well.

On one hand you're going to have an islamic republic which will, guaranteed, bite the hand the once helped it, or you're going to see some cia sponsored stooge installed.

The latter will simply incite civil violence and sporadic fighting amongst islamic militants.

How is this a good thing again?

Pompoulus - 2011-10-23

Well I am not very learned on this topic, but I do feel comfortable saying that anyone who declares anything to be a 'morally righteous event' needs a good backhand slap in the face.

Like the person doing the slapping needs to put their hips into it.

boggy84 - 2011-10-23

did i just hear something? it sounded like it was coming from that heap of garbage piled into the shape of a man.

fatatty - 2011-10-23

I think they're much less likely to bite the hand that feeds them than Iraq. For one, we didn't send troops in to fight for them, and we helped them militarily at their request. From what I've heard the anti-Gaddafi forces are very pro American at this point, much more than any other country in the region. As long as we don't attempt to install a puppet leader, or take their oil without giving anything back to the people, we could end up with a very powerful ally in the region.

And if we just sit back and hope that brutal dictators all eventually die or reform themselves we'll never get anywhere. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

StanleyPain - 2011-10-24

A minimal presence of an established religion in a government doesn't automatically make it "Secular." When the head of the state rejects democracy, sets up the system so that he is the center of it, demands "worship" from his own people, then proceeds to create his own "holy book" which is then required reading for the entire populace (The Green Book) I would say that's about as un-secular as you can get without invoking a monotheism as your authority (which Gadaffi might as well have done).
I think it was rash and savage to murder him like that, but then I remember that this was the man directly responsible for the Lockerbie Bombing and I don't feel as bad.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-23

Muammar money, Muammar problems.

La Loco - 2011-10-23

Stars for you.

Sivak - 2011-10-23

He was a dictator, and I'm glad that he's gone, but I regret that he was not made to stand trial in the nation he ran and made to answer for his actions. Everybody should get a trial. Saddam had a trial, show though it was. I hate to be the one to bring them up but even the Nazis (at least, the ones who didn't shoot themselves) had a trial. God willing, Mubarak and al-Assad will get trials. Fair ones too, if it can be helped.

No rating because it just wouldn't sit right with me to rate on a mans death.

memedumpster - 2011-10-23

Neither bin Laden nor the six floors of unarmed people gunned down in cold blood got a trial.

Sivak - 2011-10-23

They should have. Unfortunately there are lots of 'should haves.'

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-23

The grim thought is how many of them would have actually survived a trial by jury on their crimes, were they to be known.

But isn't that true of everybody? We're all guilty of something, some of us have crimes that are write large and span decades and millions of people, and some of us forget to be kind and rewind.

I suppose this is where I could say "That's why Christianity is the religion for me!" but I won't. I can't. I'm not cheering Qaddafi's death, and I hope nobody cheers mine. Lord knows that I'm just as guilty as he.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-23

*writ, i hate i can't correct anything in here.

EvilHomer - 2011-10-23

So... Yakkety Sax, Guile's Theme, or Nyan Cat?

pineapplejuicer - 2011-10-23

And five for you.

(definitely nyan cat)

fatatty - 2011-10-23

Guile's Theme, for sure.

paparatti - 2011-10-23

I'm not sure what is expected here. The Libyan people rose up, fought a civil war, and some of them won. As much as the Western judicial system is somewhat fairer than a street execution, I'm not about to tell people who have just liberated themselves from 40 years of oppression that their chosen method of dealing with the man responsible for unimaginable crimes is wrong.

decoy - 2011-10-24

Being gunned down in a sewer like the rat he was is poetic justice, the best kind.

Hooker - 2011-10-24

Man does it creep me out when people cheer or celebrate death.

Innocent Bystander - 2011-10-24

Yup. Not gonna watch a fucking snuff movie, no matter how much the guy deserves it.

Rovin - 2011-10-24

Calling it a "snuff movie" is probably a bit unfair (except for perhaps how our media repeats it ad nauseum). Libyans probably really needed some sort of visual proof that he was, in fact, dead.

Innocent Bystander - 2011-10-24

Good thing for all us Libyans.

Rovin - 2011-10-24

You can be irritated or offended or whatever, but "snuff" - watching someone die as a form of entertainment - may or may not be something that applies to this video. That's a contextual issue with the viewer and not necessarily the pointed goal of the clip in question.

Timothy A. Bear - 2011-10-24

We have lost our best dressed dictator and all you people can do is quibble over right vs wrong.

Rovin - 2011-10-24

See, if you could just get Putin in those outfits....

chumbucket - 2011-10-24

...and so, it was his bushy head that was his undoing. Roll Credits.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-10-24

And nothing of value was lost.

cool water sandwich - 2011-10-24

Well, that was soulless and depressing.

Wonko the Sane - 2011-10-25

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.

Donne, Meditation XVII

support - 2011-10-25

A question for those viewing or not viewing this video. Are you comfortable in it being available on poeTV for you to choose to watch or not?

A few months ago we dropped our main advertiser google. This was based on their instance we remove all videos with content similar to this. While this is an extreme case, they also include other news worthy videos in their demands. We think we made the right choice but is this video going too far?

Rovin - 2011-10-25

I'm a grownup, and it's not like it's some sort of blatant exploitation or "snuff" clip as I was kinda trying to say earlier in another thread. In this case it just is, and that sort of context is up to the viewer.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-10-25

As an adult and legal citizen in a supposedly free society, I should have the choice to view anything I damn well please.

So yeah, if I don't want to watch it I won't. I should still have the choice. More please.

Oh, and for the record, I have not and will not be watching this video.

Pompoulus - 2011-10-27

It's not going too far for major news networks.

NSFW shouldn't be an ethical thing, like the ethics of showing a wee-wee, it should purely be based on what content might or might not get a person in trouble at work. Oddly, Qaddafi's corpse seems to be perfectly fine, so why argue with social mores?

Old People - 2011-11-13

Pairs beautifully with this piano cover of Dire Straits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogpYYxUNQbc. Very moving indeed. "You're sinning, you're sinning!"
