When a young debutant in the 18th century was fitting into her unmentionables, it was traditional for her handmaiden to maintain constant unnecessary physical contact. In order to achieve an ideal fit, a handmaiden was expected to caress, tickle, poke, and kiss any part of the bra which may (or may not) have been fit imperfectly.

When you go bra shopping, you are going to get yanked at. All the times you are told to pull your breasts in and stand straight, the fitter yanks on the band to make sure it's a snug fit, pulls the cups up to get the wrinkles out and adjusts the straps in the back. I can see why some women don't like underwear shopping.
