you can actually see the wheels lift off the tarmac as he drops the hammer, then he over-corrects and the rest is youtube

Fake sportscar has real crash

Ursa_minor - 2011-11-28

That's a purpose built drag car with a Corvette body on it. Am I really going to have to be the Corvette apologist here? Fuck, I don't even like them - but automotive misinformation bugs me.

Listen, I've seen dudes commenting on how long and skinny they are, that's why they can't corner - which is incorrect. A Porsche 911/997 and a Corvette are almost exactly the same size, though the corvette has a foot longer wheelbase within that overall length. The Porsche is heavier than the corvette, and the Corvette has quite a bit of horsepower on the Porsche as well.
Lateral G's, acceleration, top speed, weight, drag co-efficient, footprint, reliability, and sports car behavior across the board are all things the Corvette either competes with or exceeds the performance of other high end sports cars, usually ones much more expensive. Also, the engine could not be simpler, and parts for the goddamned things are cheap and everywhere.

If you're going to hate it, hate it because it's too much car, much too accessible to people who know nothing about driving extremely powerful sports cars. Hate it because to keep it available to everyone, the fit and trim are just a step above an Aveo. Hate it because it's damn near vulgar looking. Hate it because idiots think owning one makes them an AMERICAN BADASS. There are plenty of other subjective reasons to hate it, but don't hate it because it isn't an extremely capable, capable sports car.

I'm happy with my Miata and '71 Datsun 510, both are set up for autocrossing and track days, and both are a hoot. I hate American cars, but I have to begrudgingly admit that the Corvette engineers did a great job in designing the C5/C6.

simon666 - 2011-11-28

Wait, I thought dragsters were basically Corvettes: Fiberglass body with an overpower engine.

Ursa_minor - 2011-11-28

Before getting into engineering, I hated Corvettes simply because of the Corvette fanboys claiming that they are the best thing in the world. Well, they aren't - but they are pretty fucking good, performance wise. After driving a C6 Z06 in anger, I could see why Billy Joe Bob would think he was in automotive heaven. Once you sit in an Audi R8 or a BMW M3 CSL, it becomes pretty apparent that the Corvette team spent every ounce of energy making a car that could perform with the best at a fraction of the cost, and none at all in making it classy. The only sense of luxury and class I got from the inside of one was roughly the same kind of luxury and class Kid Rock exudes.

I think what's happening here is that numbers are being used to describe something that's not that simple.

memedumpster - 2011-11-28

tldr (not that I don't love you)

Five for Corvettegeddon though!

memedumpster - 2011-11-28

Okay, read it. Now it seems more fun to call them Corvettes!

simon666 - 2011-11-28

Ursa, there were a lot of numbers in your post. I can't be expected to make total sense of all of them. But it seems the cheapest entry level BMW is cheaper (~ k) than the entry level Corvette (~ k). Corvettes can also cost upwards of 1k which intuitively seems way too much.

simon666 - 2011-11-28

One more "cheapest" for good measure.

Ursa_minor - 2011-11-28

A base model BMW and a Base Model Corvette are totally different cars with completely different purposes and buyers - in fact, one is an entire company. What are you saying? And I didn't post any numbers in my post other than the names of the cars - I'm not speaking moonmath here. What?

111k is a lot for a Corvette, but that's in ZR1 trim. It's still a goddamned Corvette, so you're always going to look like Kid Rock or someone's retired saxophone dad in 90's coolguy glasses,a puffy leather jacket and mom jeans- but on the track, the ZR1 performs just as well as any other supercar while being 2 to 3 times cheaper. Some people only care about performance, and that's okay. Why, if you had 111k to throw around for a toy, you'd buy a Corvette, I don't know - but I suspect at that point it was because "you didn't already have one" and you think owning a European car makes you a pussy. The owners of the Z06 I drove also owned an old Lister Jaguar, so I don't know.

SolRo - 2011-11-29

Except a GT-R is still cheaper, better on the track, and has a much better quality interrior than the ZR1.

And will beat it in a strait line using launch control.

You also wont look like a redneck cockhead in it.

Anaxagoras - 2011-11-29

Wow. I didn't know there were still people who drooled over cars in this day & age. Well, I knew they were out there, obviously, but... I hadn't actually seen one in the wild for quite some time.

They say his urine is a delicacy in certain Scandinavian bars and that he uses toothpicks handmade by undead wood-elves. All we know is, he's called "Ursa minor".

Squeamish - 2011-11-28

I'm really enjoying "Screw You, Corvette" week.

SolRo - 2011-11-29

I'm enjoying the desperate attempts at rationalizing each video by corvette fans.

TeenerTot - 2011-11-29

Me likey too.

I get a new reason each day to feel good about my girly little audi.

The Townleybomb - 2011-11-28

Needs the "gah-damn" tag.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-11-29

It was all the fault of the nav system: "In twenty yards turn right. Turn right now. Recalculating..."
