I always thought Steampunk was what ruined Steampunk.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-12-09 Some of it is actually pretty good. When they start adding gratuitous gears to everything, that's when I draw the line on it. Some of the more subtle stuff I like quite a bit.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-12-09 Like any other art form that involves putting things together, you're going to get a lot of drek until they start having some kind of skills test before one is allowed to patronize the craft store.

Stop tacking the word "punk" onto every God-damned thing. Cyberpunk, steampunk, fucking DIESELPUNK? What in Hell constitutes dieselpunk?
It's only "punk" when the technology is utilized by the counter-culture against the mainstream.
There's been a lot of cyberpunk fiction; renegades and radicals using computer technology against the establishment. I've yet to see any true steampunk. All the stories that bill themselves as such are either alternative history or Victorian-themed fantasy. All the protagonists are part of the system or at least mainstream society.
