That was honestly a lot deeper and upsetting than I thought it'd be. :(

The opening strums of "Suicide Is Painless" were a sign to us pre-Nickelodeon kids that afterrnoon cartoons were over and Dad would be home shortly to beat us.

I like Potter more than Blake. In fact, the second cast as a whole is stronger. I agree that the opening chords were a sign to change the channel. Finally watching the show as an adult, i actually appreciate it. Damn fine show. Also, I may have to be Klinger for Halloween next year.

No major network will ever have the courage to put something like MASH on the air again.

I was quite young during the last years of MASH. I thought the name of the show was the name of Alan Alda's character, I thought he was MASH. But I also thought Alda looked nearly the same as Klinger (clearly my faculties weren't tip top). I put it together that Alda's character was named MASH by virtue of what he looked like. So when I saw the Klinger character I thought there were two MASHES and would exclaim to my parents: THERE ARE TWO MASHES! TWO!!!

Sorry, the show was pretty great, but that line sounds like its from a terrible B-movie or old SciFi flick no matter who delivers it.

I never got the appeal of MASH. The movie was a horrible mess that I figured was only popular at the time because it was anti-war (and as far as anti-war flicks go I wouldn't even put it in the top 75%), and the TV show had Alan Alda doing an unfunny impression of the unfunniest Marx brother.

Both just seemed like strawman soapboxes tapping into an early version of what I call "Matt Damon syndrome" where you have innately talented people in such high demand by authority figures that they can afford to tell the authority figures off. It always came off as an immature appeal and everyone's outburst in this scene is childish. You're yelling at the messenger who's there for nothing but to tell you how to save lives? You might as well shout at a medical school doctor about how Viagra siphons off money from cancer research.

But then maybe it's just buried resentment at the fact that I too dreaded hearing this theme song as a kid because it meant fun TV time was over and it was too dark to do anything outside so you had nothing to do until it was time to go to bed and get up for school.

Hey career soldier Potter; if you don't like the wars, then stop fighting them. It's really that simple.
