When a man dies, it's usually considered good manners to show them in their best light, rather than showing them at their most tedious, dim-witted, and foolish.

Just an FYI.

poorwill - 2011-12-16

Suck my dick.

StanleyPain - 2011-12-16

Mine as well, only more politely.

TheMarsTravolta - 2011-12-16

Suck a whole bag of them.

TeenerTot - 2011-12-16

I will keep a copy of your comment to share in the event of your death.

Vacuous harangue, poorly timed and lacking of any wit, Anaxagoras' comment.

memedumpster - 2011-12-16

Five for Anaxagoras, it must have taken a lot of lube to get the whole Baby Jesus up your ass.

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-16

lol. Guys, his atheist stuff is by far his weakest material. If you want to honor the man, try reading some of his better stuff. As in, anything other than his anti-religious screeds.

Alternately, if you just want to work yourselves into self-righteous furies, by all means continue. But I think Hitchens himself would have wanted the quality of the examined work to matter.

simon666 - 2011-12-16

Anaxagoras, again vacuous driveling. Can we have some specifics, perhaps a passage from a more important works to which you reference and how that passage is paradigmatic of the position to which you speak?

Also: fart. pfffffft.

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-16

You want specifics? Alrighty. Whenever he spoke of "religion" he consistently ascribed a wide variety of views to "religion" that weren't warranted by the available evildence. It was true that some examples of the hateful, fearful, and evil religious viewpoint existed in history, but it did not hold that such viewpoints were the only version of religion out there. The way that he argued as if such a version was the only version did a great disservice to theists and atheists alike. It created "conversations" that were all smoke and little substace, and provided more obfuscation than illumination.

Hitchens was a smart guy, and he had interesting things to say on many topics. It just happens that religion wasn't one of them.

simon666 - 2011-12-16

You just said you were going to provide specifics but only offered generalities. Please provide an analysis of something Hitchens actually said. The format you legimate your claims would be something like:

Hitchens does a disservice because of X. Look at quote Y by Hitchens. (Y). In Y you can see X as...

Kthanks.

GongWise - 2011-12-16

How long did you deliberate before choosing 'Anaxagoras' as your poetv handle? Really? Anaxagoras? And you then expect people to take you seriously? Why don't I change my name to Aristotle? Or how bout Einstein?

SweaterCollection - 2011-12-17

I, also, would be curious to know what the things he wrote were that weren't related to religion that make his religious material look like garbage.

I submitted the video 'O be careful little eyes' to poetv only a few hours before I learned that he'd died. After hearing that song for the first time in 15 years, the immediate thought that came to my mind was Christopher Hitchens and his position on how ghastly it would be if the God of that song actually existed. The first minute or so of his interview with Sean Hannity sums up my thoughts much more articulately than I ever could, and hearing that Hitch died just a few hours after I was thinking about him resonated with me powerfully.

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-17

So you don't want to just have an example of what I'm talking about, you want an entire philosophical essay? Here, on poetv? Sorry chum, but I already wrote more than my fair share of essays when I got my degree. And yes, to give the level of specificity you're asking for, complete with proper justifications and cited examples would result in a (short) philosophical essay.

SweaterCollection: It's not so much that his other stuff makes his religious works look like garbage. It's that his religious works considered in isolation are garbage. Fortunately he also has a wide array of reviews, obituaries, articles, and investigative journalist pieces that are worth reading. For example, see his critique of Mother Teresa, his obituary of Jerry Fallwell, his criticism of waterboarding, etc.

simon666 - 2011-12-17

Heh.

I'll just point out you again talked around giving an actual answer. An nobody was expecting an essay, just something to back up your position. One quote would have been fine, really.

StanleyPain - 2011-12-16

But, hey, being a bootlicker is cool too I guess, especially in today's, disaffected hipster realm.

Pillager - 2011-12-16

Anyone have the story behind Maggie Thatcher smacking Hitch on his ass?

I'm having trouble losing that mental image....

Xenocide - 2011-12-16

So much sloppy hate-sex.

Spit Spingola - 2011-12-17

Good ol' drunk Hitchens. This just made me wonder if he was circumcised as a child.
