Getting some mileage out of the giant pancake gag, eh?

kingofthenothing - 2011-12-18

"See, the premise of the show is just like the movie, only he's babysitting indefinitely. This could go on for years!"

Quad9Damage - 2011-12-18

When I came across this clip I struggled to figure out how the hell the movie could be made into a TV series (unless Uncle Buck was just made into every stock wacky sitcom character ever). So I hopped over to Wikipedia and HOLY SHIT:

"The television version starred Kevin Meaney as Buck, a slob who drinks, smokes and is named the guardian of Tia, Miles, and Maizy after his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Cindy, die in a car accident."

So they had to figure out out a way to make Uncle Buck a permanent fixture in the house instead of just a wacky babysitter and they landed on killing off the parents.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-12-18

!!!!!...

Wow.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-12-18

That's hilarious.

WitlessJ - 2011-12-18

Yes, but is it canon?

Quad9Damage - 2011-12-18

It's a reinterpretation of the canonical "Buck in the Darkness" one-shot.

kingofthenothing - 2011-12-19

Christ. They killed off the parents. I don't know how long the kids mourned but it looks like not long enough. Maybe they just can't have funeral kids in the intro and still try to be all whacky.

I also have a hard time believing someone like Buck could keep the bills paid on a nice house like that, even in the 80s. "I want you kids to straighten up and fly right! Now if you'll excuse me, Uncle Buck has some rigged horse races and or insider trading to do!"

Maybe some of the jokes would be about taking cold showers when the power gets cut off. Since this was before caller ID, I assume, using the answering machine to screen your calls would also be in there, as well as Uncle Buck trying to bribe a guy to get free cable.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-18

Was there a single funny sitcom in the 80s? Most of my memories growing up then are repressed and this is one of many reasons why.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-18

I know nothing about Kevin Meaney but is he related to Andy Milonakis? I feel the same sense of revulsion and anger over him ever having been on TV.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-12-18

He apparently is gay, which explains the eyebrows and what-not.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-12-18

Wow, that's actually depressing.

Quad9Damage - 2011-12-18

Love how the older niece comes in and the sloppy John Candy knockoff is like "nuh uh, not gonna dress like a slut on my watch!" while that awful song plays.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-12-18

That's gotta happen at least once an episode.

Quad9Damage - 2011-12-18

In the movie I think he was genuinely concerned for her because she was resentful towards the entire universe and some slimeball was trying to bed her. This intro here suggests.. I dunno.. that they're trying to do the same kind of thing, but make it a running gag? Plus she doesn't seem to hate him nearly as much. Jean Louisa Kelly in the movie had a bitter Eastwood stare most of the way through.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-12-18

You couldn't make a more infuriating theme song if you tried.

Xenocide - 2011-12-18

WHO'S SO WACKY THAT HE'S MAKING A PANCAKE THAT'S BIGGER THAN AVERAGE?

UNCLE BUCK!

WHO OBJECTS TO HIS NIECE DRESSING IMMODESTLY?

UNCLE BUCK!

WHO SMOKES A CIGAR SOMETIMES?

UNCLE BUCK!

WE MAY HAVE OVERESTIMATED THE WACKINESS OF...

UNCLE BUCK!

SORRY.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-18

Here, take these, you deserve them Xenocide

*****

ez - 2011-12-18

Never remember seeing this.

"Dah-Ue Chodan"? Is that a Star Trek name? Also, maybe she wasn't on the way to school, but was going to her job stripping or hooking, in which case her "what!?!" reaction is totally justified, and good old Uncle Buck is once again mistaken.

BHWW - 2011-12-18

Walking around, starring in a sitcom based on a lousy John Candy movie? That's not right! Your brother doesn't star in lousy sitcoms based on awful movies, none of your sisters star in lousy sitcoms! What's the matter with you!

see, that's a reference to one of Meany's routines and...ah forget it

citrusmirakel - 2011-12-18

You never used the words "crazy person".
Also you implied Meany had other routines.

Chalkdust - 2011-12-19

I, sadly, got it.

Hay Belly - 2012-01-02

I don't care I don't care

spikestoyiu - 2011-12-18

It's been a while since I've sat through Uncle Buck, but isn't every last one of the gags in the intro taken from the movie?

deadpan - 2011-12-18

To be fair, clipping the cigar with the scissors came from the Marx Brothers by way of the The Odd Couple.

themilkshark - 2011-12-18

Uncle Buck! UUUUNcle Buck.

joelkazoo - 2011-12-19

Ouch! The evil makes it hurt.
