Rock on, little sister.

grimcity - 2011-12-25

I hate all little kid videos except for this one.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

Bah. Blah blah blah, traditional gender roles are bad...
Give me a break. Boys are genetically programmed to want the superheroes and toy guns and girls are genetically programmed to want to play with dolls. Its not a conspiracy by the toy industry.

dystopianfuturetoday - 2011-12-25

This little girl begs to differ.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

Oh yeah, I'm sure she has much more wisdom, education, and life experience.

Macho Nacho - 2011-12-25

When I was a little girl I had toy monsters and action figures. I always hated anything pink or "girly" as a little kid.

Pope Caius - 2011-12-25

But we can all unite over dinosaurs.

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-25

It's true. The gene that dictates whether we like superheroes or princesses is found on Chromosome 23, with the "superhero" gene always appearing on the y strand and the "princess" gene always appearing on the x strand. "Princess" is recessive, thus ensuring that the different sexes always prefer the correct toys.

Children whose preferences don't match the norm are anomolies which science is currently unable to explain. More research is required in this area, but Congress' Cooty Act of 2009 ended funding in this field. Please write your Representative and urge them to restart funding; help us stop little boys from wanting to be Prettiest Princesses. Please. Do it for the children.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

I didn't know you were a girl Macho. You're still playing with guy toys... the internet.
Anaxagoras, okay maybe my statement was a bit brash. I just don't think this girl deserves props for regurgitating whatever adbusters shit her parents crammed down her throat.
You guys drive me to drink. I'm going to be putting some Makers Mark into my Dr. Pepper 10.

poorwill - 2011-12-25

I support this little girl because girl toys really suck and more people should play with superheroes and guns and monsters and robots and dinosaurs.

I also feel it is pertinent to note that Cena_Mark is an admitted Brony, and that it's sad to see him overcoming his natural programming and subverting his gender role in the shittiest way possible. In conclusion, this tiny girl is better than Cena_Mark in every way.

American Standard - 2011-12-25

The fact that any of you continue to take Cena_Mark remotely seriously amazes me.

Five for this kid, and every kid who's ever been denied a toy because it was for the opposite gender. My parents tried like crazy to steer me towards "gender-appropriate" toys. It never worked.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

Still bitter about that Barbie you never got for Christmas?

EvilHomer - 2011-12-25

You are right about one thing, this little girl is just repeating stuff her parents/ teachers/ sanctimonious cartoon shows feed her on a regular basis. That's how kids work.

That said, I'm not entirely convinced she IS a little girl in the first place. Could be a fat boy with a mullet.

Syd Midnight - 2011-12-25

giygusattack - 2011-12-25

Cena Mark: Pissed at little girls . . .ON CHRISTMAS!

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

I'm not mad at the child. I'm mad her parents and you guys for thinking she's awesome. You act like gender roles were arbitrarily created by advertising execs, when they really were created by evolution. These gender roles have only really been changing and breaking in the last half century, and some of them will never change. Females will always have the maternal instinct and that's why little girls want to play with dolls.

poorwill - 2011-12-25

Yeah, but they can still have the maternal instinct for robots and laser-breathing dinosaurs. You sexist bitch.

simon666 - 2011-12-25

Cena, usually people who go 'bla bla bla gender roles are bad' don't understand the stakes or the argument. The argument is, and I kid you not, is one about individual freedom, one about liberty. The idea is, agree with it or not, that certain concepts (like those of gender) inhibit the ability for the individual to express his or her self. There are unarguably norms for male and female behavior. If someone has a self identity as a male then he will likely partake in those norms of male behavior. The problem arises when he might want to act differently (whatever that maybe) and feels compelled not to because it isn't 'male' behavior.

Anyway, agree or not with the premise of the argument, it is one centered around empowering individuals to not feel constrained by socially imposed norms.

Macho Nacho - 2011-12-25

@Cena_Mark: I'm aware that I'm playing with guy toys still, however women are dominating a lot of the social networks and other websites, just sayin'.

I also won't deny that my nephew almost at the age of 2 loves cars and trains. And I might add that I know a mother with a son who likes baby dolls and strollers. She's been trying to find a diaper bag for him, but the problem is she can only find pink ones and he wants a blue diaper bag because "pink is for girls" according to him.

RocketBlender - 2011-12-25

Not to derail the conversation, but I'm putting 5 stars here because I think it's kind of hilarious that "Macho_Nacho" is a woman.

RocketBlender - 2011-12-25

Also I just actually read this thread.

"I'm mad her parents and you guys for thinking she's awesome."

Seriously guys, parents should think their kids suck ass. C'mon.

misterbuns - 2011-12-25

Smegma_Marxist,

Yes. This five year old's starting intellectual origin point is that of a 100 level college class.

What a stupid baby.

She should be picking her butt and watching wrestling, right?

misterbuns - 2011-12-25

er, *origin point . typoed the extraneous 'starting'

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-12-25

CHILDREN'S TOYS:

SERIOUS
FUCKING
BUSINESS

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

Simon ***** these are for you. It is about individual freedom. That is the Libertarian way.

Mrstoast, everybody should watch wrestling. It should be our national past time.

I wonder if the parents would be as supportive if it were their son wanting to buy girls toys.

dystopianfuturetoday - 2011-12-25

Quite honestly, this girl's words are far more wise and worldly than anything you have ever said on this site. I'm not sure why you fail to see the implicit problem in countering a little girl's argument of 'I feel like commercial culture is manipulating me to conform to certain gender roles', with 'No you don't'. It also doesn't seem to occur to you that after decades of imbibing advertising and media propaganda, you might not be as objective on the subject as you think. Perhaps a less inculcated mind might have some wisdom to offer.

Cube - 2011-12-26

You know what? That was the longest conversation I've ever had.

Goodbye mailbox.

baleen - 2011-12-27

Blah blah blah I'm a boring halfwit who fantasizes about professional wrestlers while wasting taxpayer dollars in a dead end coast guard job.

BillLumbergh - 2011-12-25

all these stars are for you Anaxgoras, and for you only.

BillLumbergh - 2011-12-25

should have been a reply i guess. aw

Helena Handbasket - 2011-12-25

That's ok.

I was this girl. I said these things to my mom while looking for Transformers. I liked Transformers more than Superman.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

Richwon't, I've never said it was a good thing. I'm a self hating brony. Guys shouldn't watch the show, and deserve to get the shit beat out of them if they do. Yes that includes myself.
In my defense this video is about toys, and I've never bought a damn My Little Pony and never will unless I end up with a daughter someday.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

dammit, I made BillLimbaugh's mistake.

CornOnTheCabre - 2011-12-25

don't feel bad, you were genetically programmed to be a retard

cognitivedissonance - 2011-12-25

I once knew a family that tried to intervene in the gender roles of the toys they gave their daughter. They didn't buy her dolls, or anything humanoid in features. She was given a set of toy carpenter's tools, and she went about playing with the plastic screwdriver and the plastic hammer as if they were dolls, playing house with them.

Kids are amazing.

Cena_mark - 2011-12-25

That's what I was getting at. Sure there are exceptions but for the most part, girls want to play with dolls and boys trucks. Does the toy industry really want this division? It would be far more lucrative if all toys were gender neutral. The toy makers wouldn't have to divide their efforts in research, development, and advertising for two completely different demographics.
Surprise, there are differences between the male and female minds.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-12-25

And superhero dolls.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-12-25

Baffled by the invisible tag, excited by "better children" becoming linked.

poorwill - 2011-12-25

What will happen if the invisible tag gets linked? imma find out.

poorwill - 2011-12-25

Nothing :(

smellslikefish - 2011-12-25

I used to babysit two little boys from ages 2 to 5 and a little girl, it was simply fascinating. What I learned was that children don't really care about what color their toys or what they are until they begin to interact with other children more. The youngest of the two boys used to have a baby doll he loved to push around in a stroller with his toy cars. However, that all came to an end when he was informed that dolls are for girls by his friends from preschool. Personally I think we should let kids be kids and play with whatever the fuck they want.

Nithing - 2011-12-25

Smart kid but obvious coaching/parroting here. If she rebels against her upbringing like most teens, she's going to be a quiverfull home maker.

Monkey Napoleon - 2011-12-25

Is anyone else becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the concept of sexual identity in small children? Don't get me wrong, if kids want to buck trends or they have the beginnings of some old fashion critical thinking... that's great. It's great! Celebrating it, however, gives me the willies. I know the world isn't the idealistic paradise I'd like it to be, but all I see when I see stuff like this is how sad it makes me that its even a thing, and about how it's not fair little kids should have to be worrying about this shit.

RocketBlender - 2011-12-25

I think things like children's beauty pagents are way more devastating than this, but I do get where you're coming from.

memedumpster - 2011-12-26

Little girl rebels against marketing, adults who buy toys recoil in horror as if a million Star Wars "collectibles" cried out in pain and were silenced.

joelkazoo - 2012-11-28

I wish my nieces were like this.
