The Mothership - 2012-01-22

all my stars are for Stossel's 90s narcissism

joelkazoo - 2012-01-22

1:21 - That's all you need to know.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-01-22

It's true, too. Just try watching one episode of it today. A whole episode.

Riskbreaker - 2012-01-22

Exactly what kind of shows were ok to kids according to these people?

Toenails - 2012-01-22

Not color coded super heroes.

BroodMother - 2012-01-22

god forbid children participate in natural, imaginative rough and tumble play on the playground.

frau_eva - 2012-01-22

Wait, I thought Stossel was libertarian? Shouldn't a libertarian be bitching about the nanny state telling us what kids should be watching? I guess the chance to do a piece on something popular compromised his douchebag values.

Also, the whole "children are influenced to be violent" thing is as old as time. One particular German story involved kids "playing butcher" and slicing another kids' neck open.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-22

He spends the majority of the clip explaining that this should be the parents' responsibility.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2012-01-22

You see... I like Stossel when he's more or less just reporting on something. Really kind of saddened me when he went batshit crazy political in the 2000s.

EvilHomer - 2012-01-22

"Kids don't have access to anvils". But they do have access to megazords and sentai morphing amulets.

Wait, what?

And since when was it a bad thing for kids to be running around doing jump kicks? If we had more kids jump kicking each other nowadays, maybe they wouldn't be so goddamn fat.

Robin Kestrel - 2012-01-22

Those spoiled Levy kids up the street had TWO anvils.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2012-01-22

Doesn't get sensible until the end, when they actually interview thinking human beings:

"If you feel that your child is going to rape and pillage after watching Power Rangers, turn to Barney."

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-01-22

Hard hitting journalism.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-01-22

Hard-hitting journalism indeed. Have kids watch some cheesy action show and videotape them horsing around afterwards, with endless whiny, moaning commentary.

I especially like how by the end even the five-year-olds are transparently fed up with Stossel insulting their intelligence.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-22

How are people on here not getting the point Stossel is making? The first half he is presenting one side of the argument and then he proves his point of how absurd the first part was.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-01-22

Yes, I absolutely get that Stossel's "point" is ultimately to make reasonable response to Power Rangers hysteria, but that doesn't make the premise of the entire piece any less hilarious or asinine, or Stossel himself any less of a laughably smarmy douchebag.

Koda Maja - 2012-01-22

Say what you will, but Power Rangers definitely had the best guitar riffs of any children's show.

Void 71 - 2012-01-22

Spectreman was the high water mark for this kind of thing.

Tripitaka - 2012-01-22

I consumed my fair share of Power Rangers in the early 90s, and all it left me with was a greater appreciation for Kaiju films and camp.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-01-22

I want to rip that guy's stupid beard off, beat him with it, and then blame it on Big Bad Beetleborgs.

Blue - 2012-01-22

Our society is more violent than ever. How in the fuck do people just make that assertion without getting called out for it. How fucking stupid do you have to be to not immediately find that statement absurd?

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-01-22

It nestles in there quite nicely between "there is a god and he loves us" and "the homos are ruining everything."

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-01-22

Don't even try dude, seriously, don't try to explain what's wrong with that statement to people. It's like beating your head against a brick wall.

dead_cat - 2012-01-23

Failure to remember that you were the generation your parents called lazy and evil, and so on and so forth. People have been complaining about how society's been on a short rail to hell since before the days of Socrates.

Old_Zircon - 2012-01-23

"More violent than ever" is probably an exaggeration (and definitely sensationalism), but the last few thousand years have been pretty shameful.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-22

I'm not often in favor of censorship but this show should have been fucking banned. It's just a half hour long toy commercial. I have never seen it before except for clips here at poe, and I hate every minute of it. Shows that specifically target children should be held to different standards, period.
