Race Baiting: The Comment

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-01-27

Seriously, for two guys who are so otherwise cynical and informed, being that naive about race is pretty inexcusable.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-01-27

Yeah, I'm kinda sad "awkward racism discussion" was apparently too long to be accepted as a tag, but Lucas using the fact that African Americans are criminally underrepresented in modern cinema to hide his little vanity project's GLARING flaws means that now any objective discussion of the movie's horrible composition and insulting treatment of the Tuskegee Airmen must also be a discussion of race and representation in Hollywood. well done, George.

Are we seriously so cynical that anyone could be convinced that what Lucas did here actually did African Americans any favors? That we're one step closer to racial equality now that George Lucas put his hand up a talented black director's ass (or sometimes just reshot entire scenes altogether) and leveraged fear of THE DEATH OF BLACK CINEMA AS WE KNOW IT if no one saw his crap? all so he could have his big self-indulgent premiere party and have Al Sharpton stroke his legendary ego?

Look at statements like this: "I realize that by accident I've now put the black film community at risk [with 'Red Tails,' whose million budget far exceeds typical all-black productions]. I'm saying, if this doesn't work, there's a good chance you'll stay where you ...are for quite a while. It'll be harder for you guys to break out of that (lower-budget) mold. But if I can break through with this movie, then hopefully there will be someone else out there saying let's make a prequel and sequel, and soon you have more Tyler Perrys out there."

is this honestly indicative of the next step forward in social justice? not just another fat white billionaire playing the institutions that were tailor-made to serve him?

tl,dr: sucks RedLetterMedia dudes aren't as savvy on race as they are on film, but this film really, really needed to be skewered from an objective perspective after Lucas pulled the "Woe is George" crap again. for America.

I think someone somewhere along the line may have missed some of the nuances of Mike's & Jay's review, and perhaps some of the irony and sarcasm, too. Maybe I missed something, but they pointed out, among other things, that having one-dimensional characters as role models is clueless and insulting, trying to emulate a patriotic propaganda genre while simultaneously pointing out the glaring racism *in the country being propagandized* is stupid and insulting, and expresses sympathy for the people of color in the theater with them, not *because* they were people of color, but because this film would have been embarrassing and insulting to any set of people at which it is directed, and it happened to be directed at them. (I would imagine if Lucas does an internment film, they'll feel bad for the Japanese people in the theater. Because they're black.)

I dunno. Maybe they are clueless. I didn't see it in this review. Maybe that makes me clueless, too, but I thought they were pointing out mainly that Lucas was aping politically correct thought in a particularly inept way.

Lucas is blatantly taking a page out of the "Sanctimonious Rich Artist for Dummies" book and is being called out on it. To compound the issue, Lucas bought the 1993 edition.

BTW, that book can be found on Amazon. Search for the author, "Steven Spielberg".

klingerbgoode - 2012-01-29

I didn't see anything wrong with the review, nor did I find Mike and Jay ill-informed.

Quad9Damage - 2012-01-27

A badly aged, culturally blind white man says "There are no black action movies" while he promotes a hacky vapid piece of shit he likely had a heavy influence on. Because this is CLEARLY THE MOST DEFINITIVE BLACK HISTORY MOVIE IN DECA..EVER and there have never been good movies about black people.

Riskbreaker - 2012-01-27

Hopefuly Dolemite's ghost hunts George in his sleep.

joelkazoo - 2012-01-27

For you, risk!

TheSupafly - 2012-01-27

Hollywood does seem to have an issue with having black protagonists in their blockbuster action films who aren't Will Smith. But that is usually only something that is true when you are selling dogshit and want to get butts in seats on opening weekend. The fat idiots who watch this shit are much more likely to make fat idiot judgements based on things like that.

"I shopped it around to every studio and none of them picked it up...racism." I'm thinking it has less to do with racism and more to do with having seen the Star Wars prequels.

memedumpster - 2012-01-27

"Seen any good movies lately?"
"No."

Hollywood in a nutshell.

Paracelsus - 2012-01-27

Who will go to this film? Not WWII buffs. Not especially many African-Americans. Not old people. Not couples, really. Not young people.

zerobackup - 2012-01-28

Stop being so racist!

Doomstein - 2012-01-28

I saw this movie last night. It was not so good.
