Wasn't the character the result of an animation mistake that gave some background character the "derp" eyes?

Shoebox Joe - 2012-01-29

Yep, and the fans are slowly taking over a non chalant kids show. Tabitha saved this scene but still.

I still love the shit out of MLP but I can't deny the fact that they've slowly made Derpy Hooves a bit of a condescending absurdity rather than just a delightful surprise. The halloween epsidoe had her costume as paper bag pony. Wearing paper bag sized shoes and a paper bag hat. Eventually went on to bob for apples and ended up removing a bathtub plug. Even though the first fan service scene was Derpy dropping giant parcels and furniture on Twilight Sparkle, it was still only one event.

However, I will never forget seeing her hooflocked with Mayor MAre.

It gets better - half the fans rejoiced that their pleas were heard, the other half went off on social justice rants about ableism and stereotyping.

As always, it's the fans that are the worst enemy of any show.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-01-29

I do find it odd that people can't handle the idea of characters (like people) just being stupid because they're stupid. I'm assuming that they didn't say Derpy was the result of some kind of Pony Downs Syndrome, so why assume a disability other than just being an idiot?

Shoebox Joe - 2012-01-29

Derpy has Pony Downs Syndrome sounds like a pending fan fic right there.

I guess the best answer to that would be like any hard core Elvis Costello fan. They're proud of the idea to be humane.

@SteamPoweredKleenex:

1) "stupid" is considered ableist in some quarters now. Yes, I think that's pretty, well, stupid but it is. From what I saw the speech impediment meant Derpy obviously had Down's, which is stereotyping of its own, but hey, it's okay if you're Right, right?

2) Part of the curse of fandom is that there are those who begin seeing everything in terms of their current causes of choice. Sort of a "when all you have is a hammer..." thing. For them, their current obsession is a lens that the rest of the world has to be seen through. So, rest assured, they *will* find that connection, somewhere, somehow, even if only in their own mind to whatever causes they champion.

Oh, good! The Hanna-Barbera/Filmation klutzy comedy protagonist is back!

RocketBlender - 2012-01-29

Also dupe.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-01-29

Girl, it's time for you to get your derp on!

Gmork - 2012-01-31

5 for evil or 1 for spite? I can't decide

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-02-01

But... You did...

tamago - 2012-02-20

The moment that launched a billion fangasms. Brony livestreams everywhere apparently broke because of this.

The best part was when people started whining that Derpy was making fun of retarded people. Because everyone knows the best way to defend retarded people is to be retarded yourself.
