We have busy at work behind the scenes on poeTV. Some of the work isn't outward facing but the one improvement people should be seeing is faster page loading times.

We have been tossing around the idea of creating the pages so you can submit comments and not interrupt the video. It will be some work but do people think that would be helpful?

What other suggestions, bug reports, or feedback do people have?

To answer some recent questions.

The site is not going to be shutdown. We were just busy working on moving over the signup system etc now that they all have to live on poeTV. We should have posted about the future of the site earlier.

While we use the support name because of how the system is setup. poeTV support is not the same as poenews support.

No one has recently been banned. Over the years we tend not to ban people on poeTV but do suspend people for posting NSFW videos etc. Suspensions last for 7 days then you are back. Seems fair.

We have removed all Google banner ads because Google was trying to dictate some of the content the site could run and still run their ads. We felt it was "newsworthy" content and refused to remove the content. Google is still pissy and that is why Google search doesn't work. We will fix the search soon.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-01-29

Can we have a knitting club?

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-01-29

There has to be some way for people to get front page access. I know the hopper is necessary, but people should be able to circumvent it after they've been here long enough or submitted enough videos to prove they can be trusted.

Actually, could you just give me my front page privileges back? I've long since learned my lesson from the day I filled the entire front page with nothing but anime openings, and I would really like to not have to deal with that damnable hopper anymore.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2012-01-29

Can we have a link to the original video page below the "update dead link" button? Sometime videos won't load for me for some reason and it would be nice to be able to jump to the submitted link in one jump.

Bort - 2012-01-29

Oh god yes, seconding AH's request. Even if it serves no other purpose, it would make it easier to repair an improperly-submitted link.

CJH - 2012-01-29

being able to comment without interrupting the video seems like it would not be worth the effort, especially considering all the more worthwhile changes you could make. Get a search engine that works. Fix multipart submissions. Fix mad bugs, fix the way the site operates in general. you're trying to put a spoiler on a car that doesn't fucking run.

support - 2012-01-29

We had picked out http://indextank.com/ to use for searched but they aren't accepting new users. Any other suggestions?

support - 2012-01-29

Added original link.

Bort - 2012-01-29

"Original link" isn't quite working right.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-29

I appreciate you telling us all this.

In light of how Poe News shut down, it was only natural to wonder whether or not you guys wanted to keep this site up. But I think the traffic to PoeTV far outweighs the number of people actually posting.

I would also like the community to be able to add tags, or at least separate some of the ones that pop up when people don't know how to write them.

Also, I like the idea of 'about" pages for users. It generally adds atmosphere to any website, and character. Allowing us to write introductions or even produce links to other sites would increase traffic flow. I know that people link back to us already, but I think it could be increased this way.

support - 2012-01-29

Agreed on the tags. Not sure all of what can happen there but we will look into it.

Some sort of about page would be cool. We have nothing like that in the system so it might take a little longer.

Bort - 2012-01-29

"Original Link" is now working. Thanks!

Redford - 2012-01-30

Personally, I don't see the point of adding hopper bypass power. If your video is good enough for poety, then it will be out of the hopper within 48 hours anyway. I don't wish to insult the other users of this website, but the potential for people with bypass to post "Controversial" videos (anime, ponies, LPs, etc) and totally piss people without this power off is there. If there is a way to get front page, it needs to be incredibly strict.

support - 2012-01-30

Agree with Redford. We should probably remove that "perk".

jangbones - 2012-01-30

1) there is room for improvement for the search function
2) I support the earlier comments on handling dupes
3) do not start any forums that aren't attached to videos, drama will alienate many of this sites regulars very quickly

poetv is good how it is, and if I personally would not change much

jangbones - 2012-01-30

forgot...expand the "top videos of all time" list to 50 or 100

sosage - 2012-01-30

I'm not a fan of everyone defaulting to hopper status. Obviously I am biased, but I like that some of us have worked to earn the trust of front page posting and to not have to deal with the nonsense of "hopper politics" just to share a quick video. It's not as if the user can't be bumped back to the hopper flaming hoop if he is found to abuse front page posting privileges.

My main gripe is the search function, which is already addressed. User profiles is icing. I'm one of the few users who doesn't really give a shit about hiding anonymously, besides I am sure it would provide POE-style comedy if anything.

Having it so I didn't have to log into 73Q separately from POETV would be a minor, but welcome little tweak (I always have to log in twice between the two urls).

I like the "random video" in the top left corner. I wish there was some way of featuring or re-digging up old submissions in a bigger way. Some videos and their comment sections are just too classic to never come up again or be revisited.

That's all I have right now. I've grown to love the place even as it is. It provides entertainment throughout the day while allowing me to share interesting/funny shit to a group of likely trolling, but interesting commentators. Or just one person's many split personalities. Whatever!

Pillager - 2012-01-30

@ support
'Agree with Redford. We should probably remove that "perk".'

I have three pages of submissions. At this rate, I'll never surpass four. Baleen & the other old timers have ten+ pages to their account/profiles. Without front page privileges, how will I ever catch up to them?

Bisekrankas - 2012-01-30

I agree with sosage, the way it should work is that when you get enough decent videos(could be some composite value taking number of videos through the hopper combined with the front page rating) through the hopper you should be granted front page access.

And if you submit too much rubbish on the front page with the priviledge the perk should be removed. This could easily be done automatically.

I also like the idea of somehow resurfacing old classic clips to the front page, ormaybe some category with "Most discussed videos". Becuse some clips that was submitted back in the day deserve to be frontpaged again to get som commenting on them.

mouser - 2012-01-30

«This day on POE-TV» could bring the highest-rated/commented item of that day on the calendar year for the past few years.

I like the idea of posting while the video is not done. I used to Command-Click on Reply (Mac) to submit/open in a new tab while I continue watching but that ceased to work in the past year.

Wonko the Sane - 2012-01-30

a search function that returns results when searching for 'cat'

Dr. Lobotomy - 2012-01-30

Is there really a major issue with users who have front page privilege? Now I would never claim I earned it or anything, seeing that I just showed up here early on and then simply didn't screw up, but why should I lose it exactly? An average over 4.20 and a submission on the all-time most views page has to count for something.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-01-30

No front page privileges for anyone, no matter what. Just because you post a lot of videos doesn't somehow make you entitled.

Toenails - 2012-01-30

@Jet Bin

I respect your view on that and I won't lose any sleep if support ever does away with that service to some users, but I'm just going to reiterate my point that I made way down the page that I feel that poeTV is poeTV because some users have unfettered access to the front page. It's not fair, but I believe we are just here to share videos we find on the internet and make silly comments if necessary. It's not really a competition.

(I'm in 51st place bitches!!!!)

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-01-30

point taken nails. It's true that some guys produce consistently good submissions, but even baleen gets drunk and posts garbage and dupes now and then.
So as a compromise, maybe those user's videos would only need 3 votes instead of 7 to make the front page or something?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

Jet Bin Fever - I could not disagree more with you. A lot of us have proven we are excellent at finding weird shit most people here really like. I say front page privileges should remain for those of us that have them unless we do something really awful with them.

Also yes the SEARCH function! I had forgotten about it. I don't know why it doesn't work anymore. It used to. I have to google everything plus POETV now or wait for suggestions after I've written tags between submission pages and it's really a lot more time consuming to do so. If search function can be restored I'd be very grateful!

Spit Spingola - 2012-01-31

Suggestions:

3 videos that get one starred off the page and you lose your front page ability. Like getting on fire in NBA Jam but in reverse. You can get it back by getting 50 videos through the hopper that average a rating of four or more stars. Videos in the hopper that get voted out negatively affect this average. Also don't take away my front page privileges.

The Mothership - 2017-02-22

Hey Support, renew the damn domain! People be scared, man.

Bort - 2012-01-29

1) There does not seem to be a link on one's Profile page for editing one's own user data (such as E-Mail address). I could be mistaken and am not seeing the link.

2) Please add a "Contact User" link on a user's Profile page so that, if that link is clicked, an E-Mail is sent to that user that simply says, "Bort [or whoever, use your imagination] would like to contact you via E-Mail. His E-Mail address is [use your imagination here too]." If you want to fancy it up, you could also include a text field for a comment.

support - 2012-01-29

The contact thing is just too ripe for abuse.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-01-29

How about a separate forum for discussion? Leave the comment feature for the video page itself, but limit it to a smaller character size.

That way, casual visitors can watch the videos and read the short snarky remarks while people who want to get into more in-depth discussions can do so without cluttering up the video page.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-29

In other words, this would allow in forum fighting to not be too off putting to casual viewers?

I don't know if that would work, Binro. There are a number of people that snipe at each other but they are in the minority.

support - 2012-01-29

At this time, general forums seem like they would cause more problems than they would fix.

Hooker - 2012-01-30

You need some sort of system of having a discussion that doesn't dissapear off the front page in 24 hours or less. Even if it's just an admin forum that only you (are you more than one person?) can create threads in.

support - 2012-01-30

I am not sure why you think that hooper. What are you looking for?

Sputum - 2012-01-30

I agree with support here. The fact that there is no dedicated forum here is awesome.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-01-30

Well, it's your call and I can certainly understand your position, given recent events. I just wanted to make a final appeal to reinstate the most attractive feature on this group of sites. True, there were a lot of negative elements, but I think there was enough positive there to make it worth trying to save. The forums, more than anything else, were what kept me coming back.

It's probably for the best, though. The root of the problem was really just a small group of people. Their viewpoint was "If you disagree with me on any point, you are a horrible person, therefore any abuse I inflict on you is totally justified." It's like a religious crusade with them and, frankly, I don't think any amount of policing, post deletions or bans will fix that and will, in fact, only serve to exacerbate the situation by giving them cause to feel "unjustly" persecuted.

Ah, well.

Chalkdust - 2012-01-29

How about some sort of "tag hopper" or something so the community at large has a way to amend the sometimes godawful tags videos are submitted with? It would also help foster the novelty tag ecosystem which I love so much about this site.

Oh, and increase the number of tags or characters or whatever videos can have.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-01-29

My advise:

1) Screw the ajax. Fix the bugs you currently have. If you want ajax comments they are easy to add and you've got PLENTY of pre-existing scripts that will work.

2) Follow the rules equally and fairly. Treat the users fairly:
2a) You have banned/suspended people in the past just because they said things you didn't like rather than them not following the rules. Baleen was one of them.
2b) You've also banned/suspended people for not following the rules while letting others get by in spite of them ignoring the rules.
2c) You've also censored comments you didn't agree with or which spoke of 'support' poorly. You once censored a comment which pointed to a facebook group that wanted to talk about poetv.
2d) When you do suspend people it's either indefinitely, you don't really talk to them and explain why, you are authoritarian, and if they don't like what they say you ignore their actual contributions to the site and treat them disrespectfully

3) Instead of going for pie-in-the-sky features and things most users would never use, why don't you concentrate on simple fixes that most users WOULD use and might find useful.

4) This isn't a site that will really make much in the way of money. It's not a site for traffic. The thing that makes this site great is it's user base. Treat them with a bit more respect and they might actually stick around. There's a lot of bad talk about support from MANY users and it would probably behoove you to listen to it.

Hugo Gorilla - 2012-01-29

I second the ideas of a seperate forum and users having a profile page they can edit.

Someone suggested before about adding a "dupe" voting option for the video in the hopper. If someone sees a video in the hopper that is already on here, they can vote "dupe" instead of voting it down. A link to the video's page on this site could be added by a person before the inital dupe vote in order to prevent abuse.

And I notice that the a lot of artists' profile pages on 73Q are blank and the ones with content are just copy-and-paste articles from wikipedia. Anyway users could submit articles for their favorite music groups and such instead of a boring, encyclopedia-like description?

support - 2012-01-29

Like the dupe idea.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2012-01-29

Ahhhh the dupe vote option is a great idea.

fedex - 2012-01-30

yessss

Innocent Bystander - 2012-01-30

I suggested this in the past, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to come up with the idea. In any case: yes.

The Mothership - 2012-01-30

I second the 'dupe' option in the hopper. it will save me having to make a lot of down votes.

Xenagama Warrior Princess - 2012-01-31

Ditto for me. I hate when I find out that I submitted something that has already been used, but under another address or tag.

BorrowedSolution - 2012-01-29

support: maybe give the pedants around here a more complete list of the behind-the-scenes changes you've been making. any bug-fixes going on?

FreeOJ - 2012-01-29

Something needs to improve with dupe searching. Or make it so a video link cannot be submitted twice.

support - 2012-01-29

An actual link can only be submitted once. That works.

It would help if the dupe checking did phrases better.

samstein - 2012-01-29

Suggestion: Bring back my old account. For some reason when I try to log in with it, I get a message saying I have been banned. I don't know why it was banned. I certainly did not post anything NSFW.

I would also be interested in seeing comment ratings. Rather than a +1 or -1 vote, we would vote how liberal or conservative a comment was.

Thirdly, please allow multi level reply indenting.

The Mothership - 2012-01-30

I second multi-level reply indenting.

poorwill - 2012-01-29

1) Bulbs!
2) Seconding Caminante - front page privileges for those who have submitted a lot of stuff with a decent star average or whatever.
3) Ability to edit/delete posts (within reason) would be nice.

poorwill - 2012-01-29

Oh yeah: It would be nice if the star system was changed. It only takes one grump with a not-five-star rating to permanently knock a well-liked video to four-and-a-half stars forever.

Meerkat - 2012-01-30

Instead of bulbs I'd like to see little icons like a laughing face for funny and a "thinker" statue for insightful. Then a sort function where comments can be sorted in descending order by funny or insightful before they scroll off the front page 3 hours after they're posted.

fedex - 2012-01-30

"front page privileges for those who have submitted a lot of stuff with a decent star average or whatever."

dude, I am so IN

Dr. Lobotomy - 2012-01-29

I recently messed up submitting updates to broken links/down videos(The links I submitted would lead to a youtube page stating it was a malformed url or what-not) It's kinda unfortunate that I couldn't take down my pending submission immediately after spotting my mistake instead of having to wait for other users to vote down the update.

And on another note, could we get some stats and other info on the "Hot Videos" section. Like how/why has the poeTV user-base kept malformed people from Chernobyl and turtle sex up there for years... why their constant companion, Requiem for a Dream: Ass to Ass, recently dropped from the list etc.

support - 2012-01-30

That feature makes sense.

Baldr - 2012-01-30

Could you find a way to keep a running list of all the exhibits THA SUGAH RAIN would or would not be willing to hit? Because he's always letting us know, but then I always forget his position on the issue a few minutes later.

Maybe a video montage or something?

Pillager - 2012-01-30

If Caminante gets Front page privileges, I would like the same please.

Also, I get an error of "Valid ID Grab Failed!" when I try to resubmit "Alan Moore - Mr. A"

http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=31796

Riskbreaker - 2012-01-30

Can we get a monkey helper?

This place is better without a forum, i think most of us agree with that. Somebody suggested an "about" option, that wouldn't hurt. If "contact users" is not a good option for the site, how about some kind of wall to post msgs to a user in their profile? I guess having private msgs is too much trouble maybe? Lastly, a more sensitive search function, sometimes i really can't find certain videos.

StanleyPain - 2012-01-30

I had this suggestion awhile back, but here goes again:

I think POETV works great for the most part, but we desperately need some way to comment on links in the hopper. Give us, say, 100-140 characters or just to say "dupe...here's the link" This way we stop having dumb hopper vote battles over stuff where lots of people know the clip has already been on POETV (in some cases within the same few days) so we can say this is why we're voting it down. Or something like that.Or, if not comments, some way of marking a hopper submission as a potential dupe or something with a link to the dupe.

And yes...please....NO FORUM. However, if users want to set up their own meeting place outside of POETV, don't go suspending people and getting all weird about it. The POE Facebook (though i don't use it myself) predates Chet handing over POE to admins by at least a year or two.

RocketBlender - 2012-01-30

Please no forum. As I understand, that broke Poe-news.

FreeOJ - 2012-01-30

I agree, no forums please

Triggerbaby - 2012-01-30

Yes Forum! How are we supposed to maintain decade-old grudges without one?

sosage - 2012-01-30

Comment section is all the forum this place needs

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-30

This makes me really happy. I figured the poe-news drama wouldn't spill over here but it was looking tense for a second. I'm glad things are on the right track.

Anyway, comments without refresh sound good to me. I'm also seconding dupe votes and bulbs.

I wish the hopper listing said e.g. +5/-3 rather than 2, and had little thumbnail previews.

Fixes I'd enjoy:
- better link parsing for submissions. I can help if necessary.
- dupe search would work better if tags weren't split into separate words. you're right that this is best solved by better search in general. However, you don't need an external product. MySQL has full-text indexing... you need to turn it on and/or write code that makes use of it.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-30

btw, for people missing the google search... just go to google, search for something, and put "site:poetv.com" at the end

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-30

Oh yeah, the front page should show if you're logged in or not. Right now it says "login/register" regardless, which is sort of confusing.

support - 2012-01-30

Added the hopper detail. Seems a bit ugly but will leave it up for now. I hate to just put "hot" or something for videos where the vote is contentious, I think this works?

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-30

Awesome.

Baldr - 2012-01-31

Why not just make the hopper detail only show up when a video is contested? If it's all positive or negative it's not adding any useful information.

Rosebeekee - 2012-01-30

http://poetv.com/tags.php?l-C.html

The tags that begin with C aren't showing up alphabetically here.

support - 2012-01-30

We need to fix how tags are displayed in general. There was some oddness here I think done for SOE.

support - 2012-01-30

SEO

Redford - 2012-01-30

Actual real suggestion: Add an "Edit" function for replies. Sometimes, people make retarded typos or would like to think secondly after making a comment submission.

support - 2012-01-30

No editing is a POE tradition.

Bort - 2012-01-30

Then perhaps a "preview" button that displays a preview'd comment in a new window or a DIV?

Redford - 2012-01-30

Progressively, I feel that the comments are meant to evolve into the same sorts of subjects as the videos.

Cyberblah - 2012-01-30

Yes, no edit is a fine PoE tradition, but there was always a preview button.

badideasinaction - 2012-01-30

Comment threads have no way to survive, and it's especially maddening with search broken. Basically, if it's not on the front page, there's no discussion, and the front page is built so all vids last a couple of days at most.

Not to summon the demon *chan here, but the idea of moving discussion-keeping videos on top of the front page and keeping them relevant makes sense to me. Maybe have a separate sub-page for "fresh from the hopper" versus "discussion order" on mainpage (or vice-versa) but I could see script logic like this for the front page:

1) Every time a "new video" receives a new comment from a user that isn't the last commented user (i.e. not the same user "bumping" the video every day) the video goes back to the top of the discussed list

2) Once nobody's commented on the video for a week, and it falls off the (expanded) front page, it's no longer a "new video" and not subject to these rules, thus preventing someone from nuking the new entries by commenting on random old videos

Maybe make some rule that every new video gets a fair shake on the front page for 24-48 hours or so.

I could also see a dupe under discussion being merged into the original, making it a "new video". Sometimes old videos gain new context when some random ranter a month ago becomes the next knowyourmeme superstar. Unless there was some other way to resurrect an old video - maybe even a re-hopper with a "why this video needs to be seen again" to make it into a "new video" again.

Tags are a decent way to link vids, but being able to create some sort of "exhibits" of certain fave people/delusions/memes would be nice. Sort of like the "artist" section of 73q.

support - 2012-01-30

There used to be a recent comments side bar. Believe it or not, it was broken. I think I can fix that.

Raggamuffin - 2012-01-30

One of the things I like about this site is that every video, and therefore every discussion has a short life. I feel that this is a big part of what keeps the attitude here light and relatively grudge free.

In short, the temporary nature of the site keeps shitstorms from becoming clusterfucks.

Raggamuffin - 2012-01-30

That said, I wouldn't mind something to indicate new comments in a video I already watched. that way I don't have to open the video page and scroll through to see if there is anything new.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

I think we should have a thumbs up sign or plus sign for liking comments. I cannot emphasize this enough. The comments at this site can be amazing and we should celebrate that.

RocketBlender - 2012-01-30

My two big ones:
Improved search feature or fixing the google search would be great.

I don't know enough coding to know why this keeps happening, but lately a lot of my submissions appear broken to me in the hopper. Someone must see them, they make it to the front page, where some users will complain about broken links, though I usually see them fine there. It'd be nice to see a fix to that, or at least an explanation to avoid doing that.

I too, would like front page rights. I promise not to abuse them.

support - 2012-01-30

Youtube has been bogging down and that causes some of the bits to break during submission.

flotsam - 2012-01-30

The ability to edit comments would be nice.

Meerkat - 2012-01-30

No it wouldn't. You panzy.

Meerkat - 2012-01-30

I mean you silly person. I am not a homophobe. Man I wish I could edit that.

No I don't.

fedex - 2012-01-30

you didn't even spell it right

although I do like the IDEA of a flowery armored tank....

fulakarp - 2012-01-30

I would find it useful if videos (and/or comments) had date/time stamps on them.

support - 2012-01-30

For some reason that was never added here and I have gotten used to it not being here. Haven't thought about it for a bit.

bongoprophet - 2012-01-31

I second this

Rosebeekee - 2012-01-30

Maybe improve the selection of categories we can put videos under. Poetv definitely needs a food category.

Cube - 2012-01-30

It might not be the best place to bring this up, but 73Q's "Submit more" -link (after submitting a video) points to PoeTV's video submit form.

I'm not 100% sure if I'm thinking of the right link or whether it's been fixed already, but I don't want to post a random video just to test it.

Screwtape - 2012-01-30

1. I don't know how bogged down you are or how many developers you have working on it and of what skill, but if ajax-ifying comments would "be some work" then you might consider recruiting developers from the community: put POE-TV's code base up on a controllable SVN (even sourceforge or something like that) and let the community fix bugs or add functionality.

2. A *long* time ago I requested "more than a top-25" listing for 7, 30 and all-time time periods and was told that whatever backend process generated those pages was too resource intensive. Mind boggling response. So I'd like to renew my request: you should redo the top-X pages (at least the all-time page) to be able to give the ranking for ALL videos, you can use some sort of pagination, remove the preview image, etc.

Keep up the good work. If nothing else, at least keep the site running as is.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-30

when looking at someone's comment history, there is a big gap between pages 1 and 2.

Comeuppance - 2012-01-30

Yes, this. Between every page is a huge time gap.

Also, the categories are a bit limiting. If there's a video clip that is hard to place, or if it's from a recent TV show, we're stuck with "classic TV clips and movies." I'm not entirely sure what the name for a more fitting category would be, however.

In addition to that, it would be nice if "see all submissions from the last 7 days" did not include 73Q, and didn't split up multi-parts into several individual submissions.

I like the "favorited of all time" section, and it would be nice to see a 6-month/year section. The 30 day / this week sections tend to have a lot of overlap.

Just spitballing now:
Timestamps on comments / submissions
The ability to delete/edit comments, change ratings
The ability to categorize and organize favorited submissions - after about the 200 mark, it becomes difficult to reasonably browse 'em.
The ability to edit submissions that are in the hopper (incorrect links/tags/titles/descriptions)

Also, please try to not hate everyone despite the underlying hint of vitriol in a lot of these comments. We're all a bunch of bitter, old, sad men here.

Comeuppance - 2012-01-30

Also, instead of downrating dupes, some kind of dupe "flag" would be interesting. It might be a bit much to add, but it would be a lot like a "update dead link" page. Submit a dupe link in a similar manner to the dead link page, people vote on it to verify that it is in fact a dupe, and, bam. Submission greyed out or deleted or what have you. This could be in either the hopper or on the front page, or both.

Comeuppance - 2012-01-30

In addendum to my "organize favorites" suggestion:
Perhaps some kind of top 25/50? I favorite a lot of things just so I can find them later, but they're not always my "favorites," per se. A separate list that I can augment would be rad.

chumbucket - 2012-01-30

Time stamps might also allow the ability to support "Best of (year)" links

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-01-30

I just favorite the Gathering of the Juggalos infomercial each year, which helps me mark the passage of time.

chumbucket - 2012-01-31

Hey, you know what? That actually works.

Spastic Avenger - 2012-01-30

I like how idiosyncratic this website is and I like the fact that all discussions happen underneath a video. I would, however, like a way to see all a posters comments and the video they were from as a list; this would help with my nosiness in following in-jokes back to their common ancestor.

chumbucket - 2012-01-30

You mean this?:

http://www.poetv.com/users.php?userid=6542&what=comments

RocketBlender - 2012-01-30

I mentioned fixing the search in an earlier post. Expanding on that, it'd be reay nice to be able to choose to search by title, tags, or comment/description keywords.

I thought about a search for members, but really, every member who'se comments I'd care to read can be found on almost any video.

The Mothership - 2012-01-30

I have seconded many good suggestions above, but what I would like to see is A: a more reliable multi-part submission function, and B: more POETV user action on the old resubmit hopper. Pillager, myself and a few others are trying our best to keep many old links working, and it is not clear how many up-votes on resubs are needed. I see how if it were just one vote anybody could wreak havoc and change old submissions at will. The resubmit hopper has a prominent front page link, but it seems like it is ignored by many users here.

I am opposed to editing comments for reasons outlined by support.

As for front page privs, could not a rotating system be developed? a proportion of those with a track record of high stars and many subs (like those in the top 100, or top 50) could have them for a time, and then it would switch out to allow others? this might lead to abuse, but it might also lead to some interesting things popping up. just a thought.

RocketBlender - 2012-01-30

I rarely even notice when links go dead, to be honest, unless I'm just trying to find something I loved to show a friend.

I'm sure a lot more users would help with this if there was some way to know what's gone down. I know I'd contribute.

Cheese - 2012-01-30

The hopper sucks, I have Front Page Privileges and I never look at it. I understand the site needs to self moderate, but blargh, there's gotta be a better way. I was a bad idea form the get go.

Here's my totally unrelated suggestion: Timestamps. I'd love to know when a video was uploaded. Say I find a great bigfoot video and find it's a dupe, i'd be interested to know if the comments on it are still being read, or if they're 5 years old.

Cheese - 2012-01-30

FROM the get go... sorry, hungover.

Cheese - 2012-01-30

These stars are for me.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-01-30

It would be interesting to add a "curator" status. It would be like a playlist, only for special "exhibits". They'd just click on your name, see your list of "exhibits" and they could watch through them all if they felt like it.

Sputum - 2012-01-30

-Commenting and not interrupting the video should be easy. Just use jQuery ajax.

-Fix the thing where it still says "Register/Login" on the index page even if you are logged in.

-Fix the thing where is says "query 2" instead of a reasonable error when your log in fails.

-Fix the thing where the apostrophe character isn't escaped in the tags.

-If you need another web developer I'd love to be a part of this site.

William Topaz McGonagall - 2012-01-30

Hey support, it's Knuckles. You banned me on POEN for making a joke about you in the in-house forum. It had the effect of banning me here, too.

Now that POEN is dead, can I have my account back here on POETV?

Toenails - 2012-01-30

Seconding Knuckles' reinstatement.

Also seconding an expansion of front page privileges for some posters. It's a bizarre system where some people have more power over others, but I think it gives the site a unique flavor. The only criteria I would suggest is being around for a long time and generally being an active poster.

Another thing, I don't know if people besides me ever bothered downloading TIMR's old greasemonkey script for poetv, but there are some really neat things he did with that. One of the things was he fixed the skip every damn 9 pages of a user's comments, otherwise I would never have been able to list out every time Cena punned somebody's name. He also had a "who voted for this shit?" link that showed the video's hopper votes when it was on the front page. Another improvement was that he listed by the video's rating how many times it was voted on, it really showed how more popular a video was, because 3 five stars and 21 five stars are very different from one another.

Finally, is there a way to fix the way poetv puts a break in a 64+ character string?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

I love you, Knuckles.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-31

The 64+ thing is intentional AFAIK. But I agree, it's pretty dumb. What would be better is if users can't post URLs until they've gotten, say, 5 videos through the hopper.

That guy - 2012-01-30

0) Fix the bugs, login/cookie bugs especially.
1) More community. Either on-site profiles, forums etc. or on some other site [hopefully not facebook]. I'd like to have some way to send a message or figure out who lives near me for beer purposes, on some centralized site.
2) The legendary posters should have some perks or site features about them. Hilarity will ensue.
However, it should be the same rules for all, same hopper for all. This is the best balance of equality with site celebrity.
3) I'm cool with the site being interwebs 1.0. I like that the comments are either words or links, and no pictures. However, knowing what's new on a thread and multi-level replies add a lot.
4) I'm fine with the site doing whatever it needs to survive, whether it's advertisements, or donations, or being turned over to mob rule.
5) fewer cats not doing anything
6) I don't know what the NSFW issues are, but how about a SFW section and an R-rated section?

fourthguy - 2012-01-30

This is really just gravy, but as long as we're having a suggestions thread: I think we should do away with the archaic star ratings in favor of a simpler "Like/dislike" or "Thumbs up/down" system. Most people seldom vote anything but 5 stars ("I like this video"), and when they do, it's usually 1 star ("I dislike this video/it doesn't belong here"). I don't really see a difference between 4 stars and 5 stars, or 1 star and 2 stars, and I don't think most other people do either. And it's retarded that a video with 50 5-star ratings and 1 1-star rating is considered "lower rated" than a video with one 5-star rating.

I'm also in favor of the addition of "About" pages, timestamps for videos and comments, multi-level replying, and bulbs. And search is shit, but that goes without saying.

fourthguy - 2012-01-30

I'd like to be able to edit tags on other people's videos as well, as has already been suggested. I guess there's some potential for abuse there, but why not at least try it?

FABIO - 2012-01-30

I like the stars.

I dislike making this place more like youtube.

gambol - 2012-01-30

Contrary opinion: remove front-page privileges from everyone and don't grant new ones to anybody. They only serve to introduce crappy submissions, dupes, and repetitive comment arguments about hopper swiping. There's no real reason for any video not to be vetted by the hopper. If it's good, it'll get through. It will also encourage hopper vetting by all users, which reinforces the hopper's gateway function.

FABIO - 2012-01-31

The bad far outweighs the good when it comes to front page privileges.

Do we really want to turn this place into another cool kid inner-circle jerk like poe-news became? The arguments for it mirror the whole "make ME an admin!" suggestion thread during that site's last days.

Hooker - 2012-01-31

As a slight counterpoint, The Hopper is a real discouragement. I got my front-page privledges early (I never dupe anything and accidentally Hopper swiped twice), and although I don't submit _that_ much, I would be less inclined to submit things if they had to travel through the Hopper first.

support - 2012-01-31

There is a bigger/longer discussion about this. It seems fair that there should be a way to distinguish yourself and get to post if not all your videos, at least one of your choosing to the front page. I could see highlighting that as "gambol's special pick" or something.

gambol - 2012-01-31

I agree that it's a longer discussion. And I could see earning a special distinction for good posting. I do think, however, that putting things through the hopper is a really useful tool, and perhaps necessary for this site's unique flavor.

How about "special" posters get, like, hopper biases or something? A posters with a strong history could get something like an automatic +2 to their hopper submissions. Maybe this could be a function of the average ratings of the individual poster's videos in their stats section. For instance, someone with an average video rating of 4.0 wouldn't get anything, but someone with a 4.25 would get a hopper +1, 4.5 +2, 4.75 +3 etc. It would be retabulated every 25 submissions, to accommodate changes in the average.

You could do this for poor posters too.

gambol - 2012-01-31

I sorta like the idea of a "special pick," now that I think about it, although I envision it more as a movable tag that people can change at will. It'd be like a favorite, maybe even with a weekly/monthly/all time chart, but your current special pick wouldn't be set forever and would also show up on your stats page if another user clicked on you.

gambol - 2012-01-30

Can we get a user link on the front page? A small point, but it's sort of annoying to have to log in (through the "register" link), then have to click on a video, then click on the user link that appears in the top bar.

gambol - 2012-02-13

Just noticed the user link on the front page. Thanks!

support - 2012-01-31

Do people use the size feature or simply go with the size it is and bump up to full screen?

gambol - 2012-01-31

I never resize.

Toenails - 2012-01-31

I just full screen it.

Cube - 2012-02-01

It's actually easier to click the video and watch it on the Youtube page, it offers more options for resizing (and offers the 16:9 player I requested below).

muffinbutt - 2012-01-31

I would like to see the date a video was uploaded in the info on the right.

Was going to ask for an original link, thanks! But it only shows up when you are logged in.

support - 2012-01-31

I fixed the user comment history. The value for evaluating what page to show was based on 200 comments per page, but the comments were actually showing only 20 per page.

People should see quite a few more pages of comments now.

The Mothership - 2012-01-31

O my god, they are all there. All 136 pages of them. all my witticisms, double entendres and puns.

chumbucket - 2012-01-31

I swallowed my lunch the wrong way when I just now saw mine. Good christ.

gambol - 2012-01-31

well done!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

oh wow, thanks.

support - 2012-01-31

Added today in history. It picks a random year from 2011 to 2006 and picks the video with the highest rating.

That is the last of the really low hanging fruit. There are some other great suggestions but they need some changes in the plumbing. So hang tight, we aren't ignoring you. Give us a week or two. We will make other posts for more detailed suggestions on certain topics along the way.

support - 2012-01-31

Oh and tags are a mess. They need to be fixed but my oh my.

Spit Spingola - 2012-01-31

I kind of like the broken tag system as a way of finding random videos. Just make the tags searchable. Or maybe make a search for videos under a certain tag because if you're looking for a specific "cat" video you're never going to find it in the pile of 70 bajillion other cat videos.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

I really want to thumbs up or like comments that I feel are worthy.

That guy - 2012-02-01

Seconded
The comments are the site, it'd be nice to give gold stars to them without always having to make the thread longer to do so

Some of the best comments on this site are some of the funniest shit I have ever read. Sad but true.

gambol - 2012-01-31

Can we get an update to the user stats? It seems that the "below the line" stats change with use (i.e. when I give more videos ratings), but the ones above the line don't seem to.

gambol - 2012-01-31

Sorry to keep throwing things at you, but there's lots of little things (as I'm sure you know).

Could we alter slightly the way in which the "hot videos" are determined? They haven't changed much in ages, and it's pretty clear that those videos are mostly random search engine hits looking for porn.

It might be better to have a couple of "hot video" subcategories, not just most hits for videos over a week old: most comments in the last week, most ratings in the last week, most linkbacks in the last week, etc. You could even get a little more into the history, sort of like how the current hot videos are determined. All of the above categories could also be listed for videos that are more than a week old.

I think that the "hot videos" idea is a strong one; we have a large back catalogue of good stuff here, and it is sometimes hard to wade through it all. But I think that the current system could be improved.

Cube - 2012-01-31

It might break the layout and set loose a whole bunch of demons, but:

PWEEEEEESE can the video embedding object be turned into a 16:9 widescreen one? So few of the new videos are 4:3 these days.

There could be a cookie setting for it, like the 2x and 3x player selector thingie.

support - 2012-02-01

Yes. We wanted to pull together a bunch of the feedback before making page changes but using the new youtube embeding is one change on our list.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-02-01

Is there any easy way to make it more obvious if you're replying to someone's post, besides just checking the URL before posting?

I have accidentally posted things as a reply to something unrelated countless times by now. This could just be me being an idiot, but I've seen enough other people do it that it's "a thing."

asian hick - 2012-02-02

less racism.

Hatman - 2012-02-03

How about a ban-amnesty for all the people who were banned over here just because "PoeN support" banned them over there?

Specifically, amnesty for Banal Intercourse.

roughnready66 - 2012-02-05

Number of comments listed under each video

Oktay - 2012-02-06

A way of finding out about comment replies. Not necessarily email. In fact, preferably not email.

Cube - 2012-02-09

There could be more error-checking when submitting a video. If the resulting url starts with "www.poetv.com" or has two http:// strings, there could be a message telling to check the url and fix it or submit anyway.

It seems many people are having problems with submitting videos, there are always a couple of entries in the Hopper with malformed urls.

Sometimes it's really frustrating when you mess up the submission and there's nothing you can do about it, while it's in the Hopper

Cube - 2012-02-09

Maybe a preview of the embedded video so the user can confirm the link is working?

gambol - 2012-02-13

dupe button in the hopper, recent activity in profile pages, double listing of recent lists

really well done

gambol - 2012-02-13

date and view counter - also great

Change - 2012-08-14

Might it be possible to vote 73q songs over to poetv? Like, if four or so users vote it up, it hits the poetv front page?

There are some mind blowing music videos that are poe-worthy in their own right.

themilkshark - 2013-02-18

I don't know if anyone ever looks at this anymore, but I love POE and I think a slight redesign of the site with wiki-style editing would be nice. It'd be great to allow new Youtube embed styles that are bigger, and making a mobile site as well. This site actually works pretty great on a smartphone as it is. I'd love to see something like that happen, so the site doesn't seem like a dinosaur relic of the old internet. Larger previews on the front page would really help site traffic. The comment activity and personality of POEtv is great and could grow, and maybe sell better ads than wolf piss.

Yeah and I'd like hopper god status too, I mean doesn't everyone?

il fiore bel - 2013-02-26

Can you make it harder for users who join only to pimp their own videos to, well, pimp their own videos? I know no one really likes the b-word, but could that be grounds for suspension? At least for repeat offenders who submit something that is obviously theirs.

Yeah, I know anyone can submit what they want and whenever, that's the freedom of the place and PoE users vote it in or out. And I know we're supposed to vote on the content of the video, but I'm getting tired of users like mihai francu and HiThere24 repeatedly submitting things that are clearly hosted on their own Youtube channels.

[/whine whine whine]

il fiore bel - 2013-03-06

The login/register thing still isn't fixed on 73Q. Sure, when the user clicks on PoETV, it shows them logged in. But I don't understand why someone would have to do that just to see that they are logged in.

il fiore bel - 2013-03-06

On the topic of dupes, could we stop the multiple resubmits at a single time for a single video? Or manage them better. I mean, if obviously one working link has already been resubmitted, there doesn't need to be two or three more waiting in the resubmit hopper, all for the same video.

If you look at the Resubmit Hopper now, you'll see some duplicated resubmits (though at this point, not all of the links will work).

il fiore bel - 2013-03-09

And (further) on that topic, could you just clean up/delete some of those "Valid ID Grab Failed!" Resubmits (such as "The Blackest Swan" resubmit)?

You know, if anyone over there is still alive.

And if I'm posting in the wrong thread or if there's actually a new suggestion thread I don't know about, feel free to tell me.
