What? No Fernando Martinez?

MyNameIsUnimportant - 2012-02-05

You're thinking of Chatterbox.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-02-05

In this game, Fernando was the deejay for Emotion 98.3 which played soft romantic hits from the likes of Foreigner, Toto and Night Ranger.

I know he was on another radio station, and as good as pressing the issue was, I always got a chuckle out of that character in particular.

I recall back in 2009 a few new radio stations had started up and while some of them were doing frequency tests with random music or what have you.

A new hiphop station would play the radio tracks from Vice City and nothing else during their own frequency testing period, this went on for about two to three weeks, it was pretty awesome.

Explodotron - 2012-02-05

The host is the same guy who voiced Leonardo in the old TMNT cartoon. In fact. he's in a ton of stuff. Last thing I heard him in, he was the dickhole initiate in Space Marine that *SPOILERS* turns me in to the Inquisition *END SPOILERS*

StanleyPain - 2012-02-05

Cam Clarke. There was a time when that guys voice was somewhere in practically every video game produced.

kingarthur - 2012-02-05

NERD MOMENT:

Also the voice of Kaneda in the 1989-90 English dub of Akira. Great voice acting to my tween ears.

Explodotron - 2012-02-05

Finally, a name to a... face (?). Thank you!

StanleyPain - 2012-02-05

He was also the voice of "Eddie the Eagle", the NRAs cartoon character meant to teach kids NOT TO PLAY WITH GUNS.

Riskbreaker - 2012-02-07

Errr nope, the guy who does the voice of Maurice Chavez is another actor. Look for it on imdb.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2012-02-05

Never heard this in its entirety. Totally worth it.

Mancakes - 2012-02-05

Vice City owned bones.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-02-05

GTA:VC is still my favorite out of the whole series. It was wild and fun without a lot of distractions. I could drive around wearing a white leisure suit busting criminals in the white Ferrar..uh..I mean Cheetah and pretend I was Sonny Crockett or I could run around in a gray jumpsuit wearing a hockey mask and wielding a machete like Jason Voorhees.

While the chatter and commercials on the music stations were excellent, the talk stations were the best. In addition to VCPR, there was KCHAT which had interviews with an ersatz Steve Irwin, a new-age dingbat, a narcissistic rock star, an egotistical sitcom star turned stage actor, a deranged pro athlete best described as a hybrid of Mike Tyson & O.J. Simpson and Thor. Yes, the Norse god, Thor, shilling his motivational/self-help series of books, audio tapes and public speaking events.

I'll always have a spot in my heart for Jack Howitzer, star of the EXPLODER! series.

"Tim! They've got your wife!" "But I'm not married!?" "You are now... TO AMERICA!"

san andreas

EvilHomer - 2012-02-05

San Andreas.

Vice City had the best radio banter, though.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-02-05

But in San Andreas, the games started becoming "The Sims" with guns.

"Hey, you know what people want to do with their wacky crime spree simulator? The ability to change their hairstyle and manage social relationships!"

StanleyPain - 2012-02-05

I think most people would have bitched about that sort of stuff if it were required, but it wasn't. Downing a cheeseburger once every 5 hours or so so you didn't lose muscle wasn't really much of a chore.
And, to date, San Andreas is the only game in the GTA series with that much character customization, so really the only thing that carried over to GTA4 was the relationships thing and, as annoying as it could be, it was (again) optional.

EvilHomer - 2012-02-05

I liked changing my hairstyle and getting really, really fat. And my first girlfriend got run over by a train, resulting in some whacky phonecalls, so even that element was fun.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-02-05

@ StanleyPain:

I know it was optional (for the most part) but why even include such stuff in a game where the fun centers around driving a car recklessly through crowded streets and shooting people?

I have a different problem with GTA IV. In the series up to that point, it was fun killing the comically unrealistic people puppets walking the streets. Hit a guy with a car and he had a fifty/fifty chance of getting back up. Then there was a fifty/fifty chance he would either run away or run over to you and start kicking your ass.

The first time I shot a rocket at a random crowd in GTA IV, I watched a couple who had been holding hands and strolling casually along get flung by the blastwave against a metal fence. The guy died instantly. The woman got up painfully and hobbled off holding her stomach and begging for help. Then a cop car hit her and sent her flying and screaming through the air like a rag doll. It took a lot of fun out of the mayhem.

animegurl1000 - 2012-02-05

Maurice Chavez was my favorite radio character in the GTA games. When I read that the radio in San Andreas was going to have a show called "Gardening With Maurice" I was so excited.

Then to my disappointment it turned out to be a different Maurice, voiced by Andy Dick of all people.

EvilHomer - 2012-02-05

Yeah, I was pissed about that too. Clearly, whatever Rockstar goon they put in charge of the radio segments was a master level troll.

memedumpster - 2012-02-05

Downloaded.

Quad9Damage - 2012-02-05

Oh shit, VCPR. How could I forget?

I love how this starts off with the best segment - the one that has the insane soccer mom, the naked guy, and the evangelist/cult leader.

Quad9Damage - 2012-02-05

Memories. I remember downloading audio rips of VCPR and KCHAT from Kazaa.
