Oh, God. If only, when he figured out what this was about, he had simply asked, "Problem?"

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-02-08

The slowest news day possible.

Oktay - 2012-02-08

What, you think they tracked him in just one day? I think weeks of top quality BBC investigating went into this. BBC does not just confront some random nobody at a bus stop without doing some proper research first.

Oktay - 2012-02-08

Also: "trolling community"

dancingshadow - 2012-02-08

They probably had to make a GUI in visual basic

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-02-08

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the concept of a "trolling community," though there are shades of gray. Mostly gray, actually, as "The Light Side" for trolling is an oxymoron. You've got Anonymous, 4chan, and the SA goons in the mid-to-dark gray area, and places like Freerepublic and Stormfront firmly planted in the dark side.

And they are a community, but kind of like a community you wouldn't want to be in at night and nobody ever comes out of their houses, which are filled with dead pets and trash.

fourthguy - 2012-02-08

Given how dead serious most of their users are, I wouldn't exactly call FreeRepublic or Stormfront "troll communities." "Scumbag community" or "whackjob community," sure, but they're not really trolls.

Cena_mark - 2012-02-09

I don't champion him being racist. I'm just against the U.K. being able to put people in prison for saying racist things. It just comes across as a thought crime. Of course the incitation of racial violence and harassment should be punishable crimes.
Also you seem to believe the ridiculous stereotypes that we libertarians are evil randroids. Learn a little more about libertarianism and you'll probably realize that you've been one all along.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-02-09

Just like you realized you've been a brony all along!

augias - 2012-02-08

Thank you, moralizing journalist, for being so incompetent as to let Nimrod7 win the argument.

StanleyPain - 2012-02-08

How does a fat racist running away from a BBC film crew on a public bus count as "winning the argument?"

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-02-08

He wasn't running away, or so he'll say online; he so threatened the world with his vast trolling powers such that the Earth rotated his reporter-victim away from him as an act of defense.

Cena_mark - 2012-02-08

The reporter looked like a tool for harassing a man IRL for harassing others online. Of course trolls need to realize that racist shit isn't funny, but I'm sort of libertarian so I champion freedom of speech.

Comeuppance - 2012-02-08

Just to clarify - this wasn't a press conference. This guy was being questioned unexpectedly while doing whatever it was that he was doing that day. He was already clearly going to get on that bus whether they were there or not - he's not exactly running away.

He's not exactly Andy Kaufman, but who gives a shit? Water is wet, fire is hot, the middle east is unstable, and people are dicks on the internet. He had a golden opportunity to respond to "Why do you do it? How do you justify it? What about the people you're hurting?" with just "I do it because I want to, and I don't care." Boom, questions answered honestly and completely.

Snakeweapon - 2012-02-08

Libertarian is a hilarious signifier appropriated by folks who are often moral relativists or worse, lazy thinkers with access to multi-syllabics.

'Free speech' is a catch-all principle, which must reasonably incorporate 'free response', 'free scrutiny of said speech', 'free clarification', 'free subsequent ethical evaluation on behalf of all parties privy to said speech with inclusion of any/all consequential events found to have been predicated by said free speech', etc. etc.

Anyhoo, don't be a troll, don't feed the trolls, and pick your battles and words wisely.

StanleyPain - 2012-02-09

I'm not saying I agree with the reporter's approach (though the mentality over this kind of thing is a little different in the UK I would imagine, than in the US), I just don't think it made the guy look good and the reporter look bad. It was a weak approach that made the guy look like an ass. I think he'd have come off better if he just hadn't said anything.

Syd Midnight - 2012-02-12

I've been enjoying The Exiled's comment sections recently, they've got a great solution to the troll problem: An almost-certainly-drunk editor goes through the comments and re-writes troll posts so they agree with the article in the most self-effacing manner possible.

Not really an option for major news portals, but it is deeply hilarious, especially when some libertarian or US_PATRIOT_76 or something gets angry and keeps trying to write follow-ups.

EvilHomer - 2012-02-08

And with that, Nimrod Severn becomes the Rosa Parks of the Welsh Trolling Community. We shall overcome, nevar forget.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-02-08

I am totally shocked that the troll turned out to be a middle aged, balding man-child.

Burnov - 2012-02-08

This is a fine example of somebody who recklessly takes something that is humorous on rare occasions, and repeats it not only to his detriment, but everyone else as well.

The only time I recall one of those ever being amusing, was a few years back, when 4chan decided to troll some bogan Aussie's facebook memorial page.

Apparently the guy was drunk or something, got behind the wheel of a car and killed himself.

While that in of itself wasn't all that funny, there was an absolute flood of photoshopped pictures with captions from his bogan friends in the theme of those "crying eagle" 9/11 type images you see so often.

Its awful to trivialize somebody dying, but I don't know, it was one of those moments where the timing and the circumstances were just ripe for satire.

CJH - 2012-02-08

so many words. most of your posts could just be trimmed down to just say "i'm worthless"

misterbuns - 2012-02-08

awesome. you know what 4chan is.

Burnov - 2012-02-08

On the lookout for meaningful discourse POE forums, and you're saying I'm worthless?

How do you describe sad?

Getting mad at somebody on the comment section of a POEtv submission.

:D

Dr Robot - 2012-02-08

your comment wasn't snarky, amusing, or even remotely insightful. You're doing it wrong.

Hooker - 2012-02-08

Yeah, Burnov, you might want to consider that we can now see every poster's _entire_ post history. All of your over-long, pointless contributions are catalogued for easy access now. Your shame is on full display.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-02-08

It's only a matter of time before a reporter confronts you at a bus stop, demanding an explanation for your comments.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-02-09

And we'll be there to rate the results.

CJH - 2012-02-09

no one is mad at you, homeboy. like your parents, we're just weary and disappointed

Robin Kestrel - 2012-02-09

Next up: Burnov explains which dead baby jokes are tasteful & appropriate for grieving parents.

Gmork - 2012-02-09

What's with all the burnov hate? Is he one of those people that 1-stars cat videos?

asian hick - 2012-02-14

Oh fuck off Burnov.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-02-08

"9 weeks [in jail], what is that?"
I don't know man, go find out and tell us about it.

chumbucket - 2012-02-09

BBC problem solvers

Redford - 2012-02-09

I have an English friend, and we discussed this. He came to the conclusion that BBC Wales is incredibly bored and doesn't have enough to do.
