The whole "Other people have shitty lives and you should feel bad for enjoying anything" attitude is what causes a lot of people to just shut down when talk of political causes come up.
Yes, it's terrible what's happening in Syria and other places around the world. Yes, we need to talk about those things and maybe get enough people on our side so we can do something about it. However, I doubt scolding people for spending a little money on a silly luxury is going to win them over.
Look, the majority of regular everyday people in this country and indeed around the world drag themselves to jobs they're not particularly fond of every day and are forced to eat a lot of shit by snotty customers, asshole bosses and obnoxious coworkers. They do this because they need money to survive. When they have a little left over after paying their bills, they buy things to make their lives suck a little less.
I'm willing to bet you yourself have bought something frivolous because it gave you some enjoyment.
