We might be looking at a nymph here. Some orders of insects (Orthoptera and Hemiptera come to mind, I know I'm forgetting others) have only three stages in their life cycles instead of the familiar egg>larva>pupa>adult. The nymph stage is, roughly speaking, a more advanced larval form that eventually molts into the adult stage, skipping pupation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
