Awesome. Love that this was done on the fly, and damn if it didn't come out great.

zerobackup - 2012-03-06

The coolest behind the scenes I have ever seen.

FABIO - 2012-03-06

My god I miss the days of practical effects.

It's not just old fart nostalgia rantings to say that movies really lost something when everything went to CGI.

Rudy - 2012-03-07

As an old fart, I have no such qualms. I used to love these sorts of little docs they used to run on HBO and Nickelodeon back in the mid 80's. It's the only way I'd get to see little snippets of R-rated movies like "The Keep" which led me to imagine that those films were way more incredible than they were.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-03-06

It's a tool like anything else. Yeah, the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts are awesome, but they still look fake, and did so to my (when I first saw them) 10-year-old eyes.

I find CGI and practical can complement each other if used skillfully. Jurassic Park is still quite good at demonstrating this. Other examples? Hard to tell, since the best effects are practically seamless or cleverly shot.

I will say that CGI has helped free us from the need to constantly jump-cut from one effect shot to another lest the audience see something fakey for too long in one go. I just re-watched the helicopter rescue scene from Superman I, and while it's still thrilling and the music is cool and everything, it's pretty hard not to notice they had to cut from one shot to another because they looked so "bad" if left in front of you for too long. Like how the monster looks like the rubber doll it is if you see it in too good a light.

This is creativity, which Henson had by the boatload. For the Dark Crystal, I liked how they basically interviewed people who came by to "show something cool they could do" and the writers/artists looked to see if they could somehow work these talents into the movie. Like the windrider (long-legged rabbit things) creatures were some dudes who could stilt-walk on all fours.

oddeye - 2014-03-21

Jesus, how old are you kleenex?

Chalkdust - 2012-03-06

man, I thought the face-from-many-hands thing was some old routine they pulled out of their puppeteers' bag of tricks. But it seems like they essentially invented or at least perfected it.

Meerkat - 2012-03-06

Jim Henson saying he would like another fist in there.

Robin Kestrel - 2012-03-07

Jennifer Connelly saying she guesses she'll go down.

That guy - 2012-03-06

Stammering.......

......and she went on to be one of the most beautiful women on earth for 26 years and counting. She's damn talented, too.

Oh, also, [some kind of related double-entendre].

fatatty - 2012-03-06

Ass to Ass!

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-03-06

^^^

thanks.

poorwill - 2012-03-06

This movie had a very large impact on the way I turned out. The good bits of me, anyway. I'm saying I could have been worse.

Also didn't know that the best Python Terry was involved.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2012-03-06

Great hand job.

SixDigitDebt - 2012-03-06

Can we have a "fuck CGI" tag? Or Fuck CGI Week?

Triggerbaby - 2012-03-07

Yes, yes we can.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-03-06

I needed this clip today. Thanks POE.

StanleyPain - 2012-03-07

SHE SAID DOOOOWWNN!!!

she said down??

cognitivedissonance - 2012-03-07

I once had a teacher approach me in my high school "walking around spouting Python" phase (I hate me then now) and tried to convince me Terry Jones wrote "Legend", at which I just *snapped*, laid down an encyclopedic sort of rant about "Labyrinth", and kinda went a little nuts about it.

Anaxagoras - 2012-03-07

If it's any consolation, I already hate you then now as well.

memedumpster - 2012-03-07

Back when movies were an art form. A glorious, unbelievable, unique in the universe, art form.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-06

Back when old farts were complaining that all these rubber monsters and fancy computerized cameras were ruining cinema, which used to be about people acting.

oddeye - 2014-03-21

The decline into the rancid SHIT we have today started with them FUCK-BASTARDS inventing sound, god FUCKING DAMN it.

Big Muddy - 2012-03-10

Me and my brother were obsessed with recreating this ourselves. All that until we learned the hand-vagina trick.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-06

You mean masturbation, right?

fluffy - 2014-12-10

Everything about this is wonderful.
