Come to think of it, wasn't there a zombie sperm whale mounted on a mecha-spider in "Gyo"? If I remember the comic correctly, it simply collapsed under its own weight once it left the water.

Far be it from me to detract from this show's awesome set-up, but if the whales had the capability to save the world and went thousands of years without doing so, doesn't that make them just as culpable as the humans? It's like an entire race of cephalopods was Neville Chamberlain.
