This was made by the co-creator and voice of Eek the Cat.

The thing that really strikes me as weird about this show was that they use such boring, generic designs for the cat and dog characters. It's like these guys were taken out of a "how to draw cartoons" book.

I read one of the Spumco guys suggest that Timon and Pumba from the Lion King were also a Disney response to Ren & Stimpy.

That guy is full of shit then.

Seriously, what would be his next assertion? That Lenny and George were John Steinbeck's response to Ren & Stimpy?

Abbott and Costello?

Two Supid Dogs?

Cow and Chicken?

Melissa and Joey????

American Standard - 2012-03-27

Spumco is exclusively populated by people with a grotesquely inflated sense of their own importance and general competence.

Old_Zircon - 2012-03-27

Disney is a crock of shit, regardless.

Eek the Cat was awesome. Dude must have lost his mind here.

I was sort of inclined to agree with the Spumco guy about Timon and Pumba because of their color palette but also part of his point was that The Lion King had farting and Ren & Stimpy was the first in the farting cartoon arms race. I love arguments about who farted first that you get when people bring up Ren & Stimpy. I'm sure there are tons of Japanese and European cartoons about farting that predate Ren & Stimpy by decades.

I really don't see how Cow & Chicken could have made it to air without Ren & Stimpy having been there before. Nick wanted the same random humor without a royal whack-job writing the scripts. Dave Feiss worked on Ren & Stimpy, as did a lot of other people who later came over to Cow & Chicken. Basically, it's an exported version of R&S.

Not that C&C wasn't a good show. I liked the Red Guy character and even some of the I.M. Weasel spin-off episodes, but there's really no question what the show owed its existence to.

Speaking of C&C, John K has said it was one of his favorite 90s shows!

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2012-03-27

Mad Jack the Pirate notwithstanding, Bill Kopp and Savage Steve Holland have become whores-for-hire since Eek! the Cat, which I find depressing. I can't think of who ripped the Eek! style off, since that was actually distinct from the John K. style.

It really is the "Disney answer to Ren and Stimpy" in the most boring, mechanical way possible. Did any of the workhorses they had in the Animation Dept. have any actual passion for the art? How much did they get paid to produce such depressing shit?
