I've got to admit, when I first submitted this, I thought it was a video of a guy stealing bikes while the public watches and does nothing.

But really, it's a video about a guy stealing a bike while talking about it to someone with a camera, which does change things a bit.

When you elect a socialist and suddenly all bikes are regarded as public property, you only have yourself to blame.

Did anyone see that episode of What Would You Do? I loved the lady's response to people asking her if that was her bike. "It will be, as soon as I get this chain off." She also got passersby to help her steal the bike.

I don't know what the point of these demos are, not really sure where the "collective evil" is. I know a lot of bikes get stolen, but I've never seen it actually happen.

If I did see a normally dressed person breaking a lock, I would just assume the person had lost their key (a thief would say something like that anyway), is it really worth the cost of a bike for you to make it an issue with the guy? I mean there is no real way to prove ownership to a random stranger on the street?

If they weren't dressed "normally", and wreaked of pot and clearly got their clothes from a dumpster, that is generally natures way of saying "do not touch".

This proves nothing. They were right to ignore him, because it WAS his bike. Sure they didn't "know" it was his, but they didn't "know" he was stealing them either, so why should they get in his business?

Would I risk confrontation, possibly violent, possibly fatal, to maybe or maybe not protect a piece of easily-replaceable property belonging to a complete stranger? No I would not, and this video demonstrates to me that most people probably wouldn't.

I'm pretty sure that self-preservation instinct is one of the reasons the human species is still around.

No. I am not going to risk my life fighting the junkies for your bicycle. Deal with it. It's not the end of civilization.

If you're depending on other people to protect your bike, you're doing it wrong. A couple of simple ways to beat the thieves:

-Security skewers/bolts on the wheels, saddle, seat-clamp and stem. (You can cut them down to fit). It's sort of a hassle if you go touring and need to do maintenance on the fly though.
-A motor scooter lock. They're basically thick steel cables you can't saw through. Get a long one and wrap it through the frame, spokes, crank and, if you have one, a randonneur. The downside is that they're heavy as shit.

All totaled it runs you about , but it's worth it if you commute a lot and pay for themselves if someone tries to steal it.
