Jet Bin Fever - 2012-04-03

Oh yeah, Toonami. Back in the days when I thought it was novel that they showed anime on American television.

Redford - 2012-04-03

Jokes on them, there's an internet TV channel that shows nothing but Toonami shows for free.

BiggerJ - 2012-04-03

To those who didn't sit through all of Bleach (which showed as regularly scheduled) and thought that that was the last of it for the day: YOU FAILED THE TEST.

Mancakes - 2012-04-03

Jokes on you, you watched Bleach.

BiggerJ - 2012-04-03

You say 'seemingly cruel machinations of an complex indifferent universe', I say 'trial'.

Oh god. I'm reasoning like a Christian.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-03

Aw, SHIT!

I turned it off when I saw Wiseau's name.

Millard - 2012-04-03

I don't understand anything about this "fooling".

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-04-03

After having done altogether too much research on this, as I understand it, bringing back this Toonami robot-guy-thing was the joke. I vaguely remember them getting rid of him as a mascot (maybe the whole Toonami block?), so I guess having him re-appear was somehow supposed to be funny.

So... ha-ha, I guess. I'm sure the Cartoon Network switchboard was afire with confused and panicked viewers.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-04-03

Toonami was a block of TV that showed a bunch of anime in the late 90s/early 00s that got cancelled a few years back. The ultimae punchline is that by showing all the old shows a whole generation of people just realized how shitty the anime they grew up watching was.

Except Big O, that still rules.

Xenocide - 2012-04-03

Kleenex is upset that he missed out on his Sunday night Family Guy repeat for this.

Seriously, though, Toonami is what the team that puts together Adult Swim first worked on. AS began as an extension of Toonami's late-night block. The joke is that AS pre-empted all of its programming for a night without any forewarning.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-03

Their best April Fool's gag was adding fart sounds to all the shows that night.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-04-04

Xeno, implying that I am even mildly enthused that Seth MacFarlane's animated abortions get airtime is an insult akin to being challenged to a duel. He's a one-gag comedian that's been riding the same formula for years and for some reason he's allowed to get away with it.

The Toonami gag manages to be just about as un-funny, but without the queasy feeling that one needs a shower after seeing "Family Guy" or its many clones.

Xenocide - 2012-04-04

Just because you didn't get the joke doesn't make it unfunny. Toonami makes fun of anime fans all the time. They turned the tables and pranked the anime haters for one night, and they reacted with predictable tantrums.

Bort - 2012-04-04

I would imagine the fooling here is, a lot of people have fond memories of Toonami and wouldn't be sad if it came back, so this pulls the rug out from under them.

OxygenThief - 2012-04-04

I was into Toonami before it was cool and have it all on the original vinyl.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-03

Adult Swim has done a decent enough job of finding anime that doesn't suck.

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Durarara, FLCL.

Of course, they also tend to snow us under with shit like Naruto, Bleach and all flavors of Dragonball.

Meerkat - 2012-04-04

Those all suck.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-04

Your favorite band sucks.

candyheadrobot - 2012-04-04

ahhh give the young'un a break, they don't know what it was like to have the choice between He-Man and Voltron.

incidentally, Adult Swim actually aired Durarara? that's pretty amazing considering their audience these days.

Aelric - 2012-04-04

Every genre, no matter how easy to generalize and dislike, has it's good stuff. I despise most Anime, and rarely give anything that isn't a Murakami movie a chance, but I still honestly liked Cowboy Bebop as decent Sci-Fi adventure and Stand Alone Complex as decent Sci-Fi anthology with overarching plotline. The rest on that list...I can't say, though FLCL I did see all of (for a college class, oddly enough) and while I didn't really like or understand the majority of it, I appreciated the unique visuals they were going for.

Aelric - 2012-04-04

Heh, I meant Myazaki, but I think something based on Murakami's novels would be alright.

candyheadrobot - 2012-04-04

Aelric: in that list, Champloo, and Paranoia Agent would be your best bets.

Champloo was done by the same director of Bebop, and Paranoia Agent was the only t.v. series done by Satoshi Kon (r.i.p.), who you should definitely look into if you aren't already familiar.

also, yes, most anime isn't too great these days. Durarara was a surprise to me, but might not be to your liking. Panty & Stocking was fun too.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-04

Rumor has it the real purpose of FLCL was to develop & test new animation techniques, which is what I love to watch it for.

It's also said the animation team needed to do something lighthearted and silly after slogging through Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I can believe.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-04-04

I'm probably in the minority, but I think this is awesome that they did this for April Fools Day.

I thought Toonami was rad back in the day, when I was a little weeaboo obsessed with Sailor Moon and DBZ.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-04-04

Oh, and also Adult Swim has apparently started a "Tell us if you want Toonami back or not" thing on their Twitter and a bunch of the old voice actors for the shows are getting in on it.

Never underestimate the power of basement dwellers in large groups.

memedumpster - 2012-04-04

I am actually sorry I missed this. I haven't watched Adult Swim in a very very long time.

candyheadrobot - 2012-04-04

nah, you're seconded. people forget that Toonami actually only used to show action cartoons from TBS like the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest at first.

it wasn't until they bought shows that were out of syndication that we started seeing anime like DBZ, Sailor Moon, and Ronin Warriors, which showed all throughout the 90's.

Aelric - 2012-04-04

Inever really watched too much Toonami, but I seem to remember that Moltar from Space Ghost was the original host. Am i right, or was that some other thing?

BiggerJ - 2012-04-04

You remember correctly.

memedumpster - 2012-04-04

You are right.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-04-04

Yep. I remember he used to always say "This one's goin' out to allllllll the ladies..." when Sailor Moon was coming on.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-04-04
