Fred Phelps is a heterosexual. There's actually a good book on him titled "Addicted to Hate". It was never published, but the manuscript was leaked. Spoiler Alert: he's a controlling asshole that allegedly beat the shit out of his family. He was particularly partial to screaming strings of profanities at them for hours.

Fred Phelps should not be taken at his word. He isn't some tortured gay man with a genuine interest in crusading against homosexuality. You can tell, because Fred Phelps admits that homosexuality isn't a choice. This is obvious to any heterosexual, but gays living as heterosexuals don't get that because, for them, homosexuality really is a choice that they might have made had their childhood TV characters told them it was okay.

The protests are a scam, and anybody that treats them as sincere is a fucking sucker. He's a democrat and a civil rights lawyer that fought Jim Crow. I'm sure he probably gets a lot of checks for his anti-gay crusade, but to my knowledge, he hasn't taken any action to advance that anti-gay agenda beyond building his own brand. It's a scam.

He has a long history of using his church for scams. The "church" is his house and the "congregation" is just his very large family. The protests are pretty much just a way to get people to scream at his kids because he's too old and frail to get away with it these days. Read the book. I guarantee you will find your opinion of him less favorable with each chapter you read. He is not as nice a person as his cruel funeral protests would suggest.

Want to oppose him? Don't fucking stand out there with a dumb sign or try to talk him out of beliefs he doesn't really fucking have and make fucking sure that a pregnant woman with nine kids can get access to enough services in your community that she won't have to go back to a fucking monster like this. Marge and her kids escaped only to find there was nowhere to go. We as a society really fucking failed that family.
