It's good to see Sam Cooke doing something productive since the whole singing thing fizzled out.

Meerkat - 2012-05-27

Aaand it opens with a neckbeard.

Cena_mark - 2012-05-27

So much lisping.

Wonko the Sane - 2012-05-27

oh god, the smell

big pincers - 2012-05-27

That went through my mind, too. I'm sure it's similar if not worse than the anime convention smell...

Kabbage - 2012-05-27

Getting through the first minute is just flat-out not an option.

Kabbage - 2012-05-27

6:13 - 7:00 god yes

Cena_mark - 2012-05-27

He paid a lot of money for that.

"WHY WOULD WE HAVE BABY OIL"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-05-27

As a huge fan of Boxxy, you might expect me to have some insights into the pony thing, but it eludes me completely.

What I can relate to is the awareness on the part of that one kid that what he's into is kind of unseemly and embarrassing, but I don't want to pull anybody's teeth out. Everybody's passion is weird and unseemly to everybody else, and lots of people are mean. Fuck it, who cares?

craptacular - 2012-05-27

"fuck it, who cares?" no. just no.
Bronies are emblematic of something gone wrong in the late-Gen X-Millenial generation, a loss of masculinity, or an over-acceptance of the feminine side of their personalities, coaxed by internet support forums and lack of peer pressure to find a girlfriend. I think the problem, at its root, is the internet forum where bronies can support their "passion", and with that support, ward off all the weird looks and disapproval from the people they see in their real lives, because they know that a voice on the internet feels the same way. But perhaps a Brony POETV user can explain it for us?

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-05-27

We care, and have cared for the past 10+ years.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-05-27

I, for one, encourage the brony movement. The more socially inept losers obsessed with rainbow horses means less competition in the real world. One more brony means one less person I have to deal with.

Aubrey McFate - 2012-05-27

Craptacular, I totally agree that the image board echo chamber of creepy is largely responsible for the brony phenomenon, but I'm really interested in the other side of your argument. Do the bronies just need to drink some Buds and work on a car to work it out of their system? Should we have camps devoted to remasculinizing these guys? The camps could give them the recommended amount of girlfriend-getting peer pressure at least.

Cena_mark - 2012-05-27

I think its a side product of a society where the expectation to grow up is happening later and later. Going home after college is almost expected nowadays, and parents are ever so reluctant to let go.
Granted there's nothing wrong with be an adult who enjoys cartoons, but I wonder how many of these bronies live on their own and have real jobs.
I hate the "love and tolerate" bull crap of it. This is how they try to convince themselves that they're more than just a bunch of dorks watching a girls cartoon. They act like the internet is so full of hate and that they are somehow a beacon of light above all that.
All these dorks need to be forced to join the Army.

Old_Zircon - 2012-05-27

I don't know, it's not too unusual for adults to live at home until their 30s in Italy and I don't know that there is much of an Italian Brony community.

There's a difference between never leaving your parents' basement and having to move back after college because you graduated into one of the worst economic climates in American history and are paying back you 100k of student loans on a gas station salary.

Old_Zircon - 2012-05-27

I guess what I'm saying is, these people are broken in ways that can't really be blamed solely on society.

Hooker - 2012-05-27

Nobody cares about you, Holmes, let alone expects anything from you.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-05-27

Cena, you really want these guys to serve along side you in the ar-

Oh yeah, you're coast guard, I see what you did there. Nice one. :)

Blue - 2012-05-28

Okay, for starters, your kind of masculinity is an awful brand of misogynist cowardice. It's based on a weird anti-female McCarthyism that sees an evil menace in guys that aren't sufficiently afraid of catching gay. It's an insult to every mother, every sister, every female lover and every daughter and the kind of man that will stand for that is incredibly weak and cowardly. If you can't hold a purse or buy a tampon, you've got no business calling anybody else a wuss.

Real men don't fucking need to police people's masculinity. Although I would point out that bronies are basically acting the way men are taught to, they just don't let pussies like you bully them into being afraid of feminine stuff. There's nothing wrong with femininity, not even in men. If anything bronies would benefit greatly from adopting some feminine traits. Things like paying attention to hygiene, their appearance, fashion and how their actions will be perceived by others would do them some good. It's just fucking unfortunate that this show is so advanced. This show's female demographic may be younger, but they've been bombarded with messages about how to not be creepy, gross nerds for years before they watch this show.

Maybe they should make a miniseries of MLP:FIM that brings the autistics and the manchildren up to speed. Maybe a pony with a TV cutie mark learns how to bathe and to leave Fluttershy alone after she tells him she's not interested like, five fucking times. Dammit, now I want to write pony fanfic.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-05-30

Hmmm, perhaps my fanmade pony, Dignity, could make an appearance to help that pony learn.

TheSupafly - 2012-05-27

Friendship is Tragic

big pincers - 2012-05-27

this is more soul-crushingly desperate than that Superheroes documentary.

5 STARS-WOULD DEFINITELY RATE AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Old_Zircon - 2012-05-27

This makes the people in Darkon look like pillars of normalcy.

grimcity - 2012-05-27

Dammit, I watched more than half of this... I sincerely thought the whole concept of bronies was a funny internet meme, I didn't realize this was a real thing.

This has to be something that started off as a joke until a few people picked up the mantle with serious intent, huh?

Riskbreaker - 2012-05-27

Japan is laughing so hard right now.

Crackersmack - 2012-05-27

This has something to do with pedophilia, doesn't it? I don't even want to know. I'm sorry that I ever learned that these people exist.

At least furries have some group to look down upon now I guess.

Blue - 2012-05-27

What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you have any idea what pedophilia is? It's really not that fucking complicated a concept. It's not watching kids' TV shows, it's not pretending to be a child, it's not fucking a consenting adult of the same gender, it is fucking a child when you are not one. You goddamn sped.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-05-27

Someone's got a big chip on their little shoulder.

Crackersmack - 2012-05-27

Sorry Blue, you seem very touchy and easily angered about this particular topic. I didn't mean to offend anybody.

Is it such a stretch to wonder if somehow the bizarre compulsion of some extremely socially awkward adult men to watch programming and collect toys designed for female children might indicate an unhealthy attraction to female children?

If you had a young daughter, would you let one of these guys babysit her?

Cena_mark - 2012-05-27

They'd be bad babysitters because they'd probably steal all your daughter's toys.

Blue - 2012-05-28

Cena Mark just typed my comment.

I'm a queer, kinky person that was molested as a child. It's my suffering that's often being used as a cudgel against my pleasure by assholes preaching the same fucking values that let that shit happen in the first place.

I know people that are weird and different can be creepy. Surely, some people that are into weird stuff are also pedophiles, but guess what? They don't fucking disclose that stuff to people whose kids they want to fuck. If you want to be leery of someone, be leery of the priests and religious fuckers. There's a fucking reason that their God is so concerned about your kid not knowing the words they might use to describe rape.

To answer your question, I don't have kids, but if I did I would probably be having them with a lady that wears diapers for sexual purposes. To answer your question, both yes and no. I don't have a problem with weird fandoms, fetishes, or even responsible drug use. If you've hired several babysitters, you've hired a person that's into stuff like that. If you know about it though, then they've likely exercised very poor judgement and I wouldn't hire someone that doesn't use good judgement.

Crackersmack - 2012-05-28

There's "weird creepy" and there is "dangerous creepy".

It appears to me that the men in this video are obsessed with female children represented by anthropomorphic ponies. The way these ponies look, talk, behave, etc. is as much "sassy preteen human female" as it is "magical pony". That sets off alarm bells for me.

We aren't talking about gay people, anime fans, fetishists, stoners, or even furries here. This brony shit is not even in the same ballpark to me. We are talking about socially awkward adult men that seem to obsess over representations of female children, despite social consequences for doing so. That's creepy as fuck, and I really don't think you should lump it in with any other safe, responsible sexual (or other) behavior that may be outside what some parts of society considers "normal".

memedumpster - 2012-05-27

I wasn't going to comment, but maaaaan...

I really liked that it opened with a song. Is that the theme song? I also really liked how God told that one dude in a fortune cookie to hide his shameful fandom and he took that to mean enable it further in front of more people, that is religion pure and uncut. I want Angry Banjo Anti-Bronie on a Magic the Gathering Card. His whole explanation of happiness is goddamned poetry. There's a lot of talk above about the masculinity of these people, but they're not flaming gay or anything. If you imagine grown women of girly to diesel mannerisms doing this, it's still kind of weird. There are no masculine stereotypes in their ranks, which is what I think people are missing. Bronie Dungeons and Dragons is fascinating in that it mirrors a historical force of one culture blending with another, which in the 21st century seems to be the intercultural phenomenon of constant remixing. We, as a species, are out to conquer our own pasts like an invading army. Bronie who beat up a class mate for making fun of his name seems well adjusted to me.

So I guess what I took away from this is that I'm glad home video game consoles were new when I was a kid, so that became the fascination of my generation. Technology as a media serving infrastructure already in place is having some strange effects on human beings.

Cena_mark - 2012-05-27

That's not the theme song. That song is Winter Wrap Up from the episode Winter Wrap Up.

Dr Robot - 2012-05-28

Stars for the fact that you know that.

Why the fuck do you know that?

pastorofmuppets - 2012-05-27

This could have been much better, given the subjects. Friendship is boring.

twinkieafternoon - 2012-05-27

The "He's high!" at the black kid was...I don't even. And good God, Adam.

There's a strong insecure, violent undercurrent to a lot of these people. They want so badly to criticize other people, but yet want so badly to be above that (or maybe just can't bring themselves to).

Maybe this is what happens when you try to stuff frustration and anger in--or try not to be hated by anybody--for years. Not even the "liking ponies" thing, but how they categorize every social interaction into "allies" and "people I want to destroy." The amount who fantasize about violence/have anger management issues can't be insignificant.

Friendship is Threatening.

Kabbage - 2012-05-28

YES, I was thinking this exact thing. Their approach and relation to the black kid, the reaction of pure frustration and barely-suppressed rage in the man with the gigantic stuffed pony, the casual tearing-out-teeth comment, the way like... the guy who runs Neighslayer and his insanely angry roommate were apparently best buds before he went out the rainbow pony back door and his roommate raged out the front. There's these moments of true hate, true despair, and true anger that explode to the surface the instant - the INSTANT - the cartoon internal narrative is disrupted or shattered or cast into ambiguity.

I'm not trying to be dramatic but something about a lot of these people seriously disturbs me, and not in an ironic way. My brain kept sending out danger signals a lot of the time, across the video. I couldn't entirely say why.

I really do feel like there's a fucking fascinating documentry here about the conflict between escapist identity and a reality/self/world they seriously fucking hate.

That moment at 7:17 when he's scrubbing the horrible black mark of reality off of the pristine fluffy pink cartoon god and it just daydreams away from this image into the ponies having a birthday party is like... IT'S ART

pastorofmuppets - 2012-05-29

"escapist identity" sums it up pretty well. it's why the banjo player managed to get sucked into their little world without actually being a brony.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-05-27

Five stars for making me feel fucking awesome.

None, not one of the nerdy hobbies I've ever had, have came even close to this level of pathetic.

big pincers - 2012-05-28

I thought being a male fan of Sailor Moon in my teens was the most horribly nerdy and embarrassing thing. Thank you, Bronies, for lessening my shame!
