I understand almost nothing about this.

Believe what lies? Get my money? What?

The Mothership - 2012-06-11

I don't understand the video, the reasons behind its production, the description or the tags. wtf does white privilege have to do with this right here?

Hooker - 2012-06-11

Now that you mention it, I'm confused by "white privilege" as well. I didn't even notice that the first time through.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2012-06-11

Whites have the privilege of affording extra care for their special needs children, rather than leaving them to languish in a pit of rot or being forced to give them up. Also, as SPK mentioned below, whites also have the privilege of brainwashing themselves into a fantasy world where a mentally retarded child is anything but a tragic, hopeless situation.

Indidan - 2012-06-12

but, but... Forrest Gump.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2012-06-11

Needs an Eraserhead tag.

From the comments:

"It seems like they are trying to use autism as another reason for eugenics. The real "disability/disorder" in some humans is the need to control the lives of others rather than letting humanity flourish."

Um, Autism isn't humanity "flourishing" as most parents and teachers of autistic kids, especially severe cases, will tell you. Thinking that Autism is somehow a different flavor of normal, a new race, or "blue children" or whatever is pretty much one of the stages to thinking that Atlantis was real and run by super-advanced Autism-o-nauts.

Maybe fantasy helps them cope.

I have often wondered about the whole "half-expressed genetic type works, fully-expressed genetic type is a disaster" thing with the autism spectrum. Severely autistic people are at worst barely people at all, whereas Aspergers or perhaps subclinical autistic tendencies just mean you've got traits that'll help you out in the right fields. It would suggest a rise in autism in the centuries following the rise and success of mass science and industry.

But I mean shit, it's not like Science Demands Aspergers. My sister is kinda-high-functioning and I don't think of this reading of Neurotypical Fascism is much more sound than deaf parents demanding deaf children.

Rosebeekee - 2012-06-11

From what I understand, some people (mostly tumblr social justice warriors) don't like Autism Speaks because they spend quite a bit of the money they receive on trying to find cures for autism, which they don't like because autism is a "personality trait and not something to be cured". They're also pissy because Autism Speaks doesn't have any people with Autism on their board of directors or in high positions within the organization.

My parents adopted a very low functioning autistic when I was 12. Whenever I hear people say how raising severly disabled children is so rewarding and such a blessing I want to punch them in the throat. It's not. I'm sure for some people it is, but from what I've seen, it isn't. It's depressing, it's hopeless, it's futile, it means give up even the simplest of your dreams and ambitions, and it's been like watching my mother die slowly, confined in a house she can't leave because she's chained to a retard she has to watch almost all day who's communication skills are no different than a parrot.

Gmork - 2012-06-11

Apparently you can become autistic from an early childhood trauma. A friend of mine from middle/high school was "slightly autistic" (never elaborated on) from being scalded with hot coffee on accident by a visiting aunt when he was around 1-2. He's totally functional and a cool guy to boot, his voice was just awkward (shoulda heard him pre- and post-puberty voice change) and he had a learning disability, but I never saw evidence of it, just a slight speech impediment.

So yeah, my point is severe autism is heartbreaking for all involved parties and there should be some better nomenclature to easily differentiate the degree. Or i'm dumb and just dont know those words.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-06-11

Every "autistic" kid I've ever met in real life seemed like a regular kid that was just anti-social.

Not saying autism isn't real, but I think it's way over diagnosed nowadays. It's like the new A.D.D.

RedHood - 2012-06-11

So basically most of these sever "autistic" kids are just plain old retarded?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-06-11

If you've actually met them in "real life," chances are they're among the high functioning Autistics, or they're ones who have had coping/behavior methods drilled into them so they don't make a scene.

And it can be diagnosed in degrees, sure. That widens the scope of people who can be on the spectrum. However, your anecdote is like saying "all the visually impaired people I've met just needed glasses, so blindness is overhyped."

endlesschris - 2012-06-11

My half-brother is super autistic, and I hope everyday that he fucking falls down some stairs and breaks his neck so my father can live a normal life.

NewHeavenSalesman - 2012-06-11

stars for the above comments depressing the shit out of me

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2012-06-11

I knew a family growing up that had a son that was 'high functioning' autistic. His day consists of watching movies over and over again (sometimes 3-5 times a day, same movie). He watches them, and at his favorite parts, rewinds and watches those parts 5-10 times each.

He also has a tendency to walk around repeating lines from movies as his way of communicating. For example, he might say "To the batcave!" when he is feeling like going home, but when he's mad, he might scream and stop his feet and proclaim that "We're all gonna die" and get very emotional, to the point of tears... just because the people around him aren't as concerned about dusk fading to night. (he has a complex about nighttime, scares the shit out of him for some reason, even in bright parking decks and such).

His mother has been left a shell of a woman. His father is still around, but is probably the most unloving person on the planet. For all I know, she and him haven't even kissed or hugged in ten years. After the kid started getting bad, he really changed and became a bitter old man.

So now she is stuck taking care of a 30 year old autistic man who watches batman all day long and will never bring any money or joy into the house. THey can't be out at night, and they cant' break the routine of 'sit around the house' or else the guy gets really loud and upset. He has to be in a 'safe place' all the time.

Moral of the story:

Autism isn't a FUCKING personality trait. It's a mental disorder which sometimes violently affects people we love. Suggesting that we not treat it is effectively signing the order to lock your famliy and friends up for life because you were too fucking cheap to try and find a cure for this disease. I've fucking had it with idiot moms that won't get vaccinations for their children and people that think we somehow need to just let nature take it's course.

That didn't fucking work for polio did it? No, we had to assrape that disease out of existence. This is no different.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2012-06-11

Agreed.

I knew someone that has an autistic child with a similar issue with the dark. He'd go to the kitchen at night and then end up sleeping on the counter if the hallway lights got shut off because he was terrified of the dark.

A friend of mine also worked with autistic children for a bit (he's trained as a psychologist) and the stories were just fucked. Autism is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

13.5 - 2012-06-11

My family got hit pretty hard, but at least my sister doesn't freak out beyond the extent of talking over and over about how the sky is turning off

kingarthur - 2012-06-12

Hear hear.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-06-14

That was very good. Thanks.

fatatty - 2012-06-12

So basically having an autistic child is worse than getting AIDS, got it.

Reading these stories has made me want to attempt having children even less.

Uulanbaatorbaby - 2012-06-12

Christ, PoE, I`ve been your faithful autistic manchild for all these years! Is this the thanks I get for all those cat videos?

memedumpster - 2012-06-12

Sometimes I want to drive poe off the George Washington bridge so Chet can lead a normal life.

jreid - 2012-06-12
