oh boy, here come the ol' social sciences aren't science arguments again. "Hard" sciences are hardly that. The closer you get to nailing anything down the further it slips away. There is always uncertainty, like memedumpster said so well.

I think it depends a lot on what one thinks of when talking psychology. Some psych courses are more biological in nature, where they look at things like the moon illusion (why we perceive the moon to be larger when it's near the horizon) or how we learn to spot cues of three dimensions in 2D drawings/pictures. There's also the "stimulate the brain with X and usually you get Y," both via chemical and behavioral processes.

The psychology a lot of people think about is therapy, which is, indeed, damn hard, since people are unreliable witnesses, especially to their own experiences and self-reflection coupled with the skill (or lack thereof) in diagnosis. Just like nearly everyone claims to have had a bad teacher (when the fault could be their own stupidity), a lot of people have either had a bad therapy experience or think they're immune from such Jedi Mind Tricks.

Can a person's behavior be predicted accurately down to the finest detail? Unless they're autistic, probably not. Can they diagnose fairly well-documented behaviors resulting from chemical or experiential sources? A lot of the time, sure.

If psychology is a science then how come you can't apply the scientific method to it*?

*With the exception of some neurobiological psychology, but even then it's more under the umbrella of Biology and the inherent complexities of human beings make it pretty fucking hard to quantify

The scientific method is used all the time in psychology. It's not written in Unreal Script and only compatible with a GeForce capable laboratory. It's more flexible than that.

Psychology does plenty of predicting based on actual peer-reviewed data. One really simple example: If you were beaten as a kid, you're more likely to beat your own kids.
