This kickstarter thing is the greatest idea of our time, i'm thinking of some excuse to make people give me money. Maybe a series of youtube videos where i study ninjers, and their ninjitsu.

jangbones - 2012-07-01

The NYT wrote an article recently that said that KickStarter and IndieGoGo were the future of media funding. They have already changed the media landscape.

I am editing a trailer for KickStarter right now.

Weeeeird.

themilkshark - 2012-07-01

Pretty high budget for an adventure game. 0,000? Let me guess, they're underwater on their mortgage.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-07-01

Is it? Do you really have an idea how much an adventure game should cost? I don't, so if you can elaborate, I'm interested.

BiggerJ - 2012-07-01

Double Fine Games said that their original 300K plan for their adventure game (with 100K being spent on the documentary) would have involved a smaller game with no voice acting. The end result, with over 2 mil being spent on the game, is in the same league as their XBLA titles, like Costume Quest and Stacking. And that's still nowhere near the budgets of modern AAA titles.

LJ: Kickstarter is one of the greatest timed things ever for up and coming game developers. The DLC future we are creeping towards is making the dream crushing, soul sapping Publishers irrelevant (as long as you can handle your own PR and marketing). Kickstarter/Indiegogo is taking out the need to go to Publishers for the only thing they have left to offer: cash. If you want to make a game and you don't want to go through the video game industry machine, you almost have zero excuse in 2012 to not be planning out a Kickstarter campaign and allowing the chips fall where they may.

300K, when crunching the numbers, tends to be around the mark for paying 5-ish team members to work on a year long project full-time. I'm surprised when a game project in its early stages doesn't ask for at least 100-200K.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-07-01

Just asking for money isn't usually going to work. I know of more projects that failed than succeeded on kickstarter. Bad ideas and lackluster visions go down in defeat all the time,

I'd take a real close look before giving money, or asking for money, but since I intend doing neither anytime soon, I'll just say that I love the idea in principle. Anything that puts the lie to the conservative myth that nothing would ever happen without greed is okay with me..

But if you're giving someone money y6ou can't afford to write off and expecting something in return, and it's not in writing, you're a fool..

BiggerJ - 2012-07-01

It's already finished, with 5,316. Repeat this mantra: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-07-01

Here's a mantra for you:

Learn to read.

Learn to read.

Learn to read.

We weren't talking about the fucking game, you silly little twerp. We were talking about kickstarter in general.

BiggerJ - 2012-07-02

Oh, sorry. My mistake.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-07-02

Wait, you're apologizing? Is this some kind of trick?

No problem. Have a nice day.

memedumpster - 2012-07-01

JPL has a Basics of Space Flight online course that I found to be amazing beyond words. I wonder if people would donate to a kickstarter to make the experience a theme park or video game?

poorwill - 2012-07-01

I like the idea of kickstarter, but on the shitty side of things:
Can anyone name some projects that got funded but weren't delivered on? I know Deakin from Animal Collective is a scam artist (to the consternation of a friend who donated a lot) ... who else? Is there a list somewhere?

joelkazoo - 2012-07-02

I would say she should go back to starring in Troma movies if she needs the money so badly, but Lloyd is a cheap bastard.

Siebenstein - 2012-07-02

Well better her than Roberta Williams.

heyitslozeau - 2012-07-02

No.

NancyDrewFan123 - 2012-07-02

Gabriel Knight was a good game :]

StanleyPain - 2012-07-02

I dunno, it's hard for me to hate on stuff like this because it speaks so much of the sorry state of video games nowadays. I mean, there's no way the gaming industry can last in the direction it's currently heading. When an A-list title costs more than the GNP of a small country to create and then the studio goes under when it fails to sell a billion copies, it won't last. This year alone, what, 4 or 5 major studios closed? (not counting the 38 Studios disaster)
I think simple development like this (and simpler games) is very likely to be the future. I think we're heading towards another video game crash, personally, which is depressing but very likely.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2012-07-02

Back in 1998, Electronics Gaming Monthly had a two page article about Sequelitis. I never thought much of it because franchises like Sonic, Mario, Tekken and Tomb Raider had staying power and were evolving. Plus, at the time, I was a youngin' and didn't want to think too badly on the games I liked.

About 7 years ago, a gaming site called Defunct Games ran an article about the then current model of business in the gaming industry. What was said then, matters now. Creativity and change is dead and the next video game crash is inevitable. The small, independent studios will survive because they don't have the million and reputations at stake.

I have played games most of my life and am glad to see this generation go. Industries all around the world need new blood in them and it looks like the only way to do it is to let it crash and burn.

Camonk - 2012-07-02

At least this way adventure gamers will have no one to blame but themselves and Jensen for how shitty the game turns out

"The main character is Malachai Rechter."
