I'm always surprised by how unable the vast majority of of scientists seem to be completely unable to translate into lamen's terms. I imagine it's a lot like how most adults seem unable to to explain things to children in a way they can understand.

a popular saying is that it was easier to detect the higgs boson than it is to explain it to the layman

misterbuns - 2012-07-07

I want to see Feynman break through the screen like in Videodrome and strangle this shithead to death while smoke pours out of his eyes. Before the last gurgling breath sparks shower the set as the circuits all short out and the cameras all die.

StanleyPain - 2012-07-07

It's especially mindblowing since the Wikipedia article for the Higgs Boson goes out of it's way to put up a very good layman's description right up front. These people can't read a few paragraphs of text on the internet's dominant source of information.

If you explain serious adult shit to children in a way they can understand they just bombard you with worried questions and get more confused or start crying because they feel scared and helpless and most of the answers end up being "No", "Nobody knows", "Someone would be hurt or killed", "Because you can't", "That thing you believe is not true, people made that up" etc.

It's kinda the same with science.

I bet this bit was surprisingly expensive to produce despite the shitty quality. CNN probably bleeds money from their stupid tech bullshit that no one cares about.

Baldr - 2012-07-07

I feel really bad for this guy. We get to laugh a bit and forget about it, but his colleagues are going to be mockingly referencing Justin Bieber for the rest of his life.

"Your tenure review committee feels like your career has been a lot like Justin Bieber's. We all loved you at first, but now we're just trying to figure out what the fuck was wrong with us."

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-07-07

Yes, thank you for that. Now I'm going to associate the most exciting scientific discovery of the year with Justin Bieber.

SolRo - 2012-07-07

Do you think people that still watch CNN seriously would have the attention span to watch any of that without the bieber graphic in there?

dead_cat - 2012-07-07

Stop calling it the goddamn God Particle already. Damn you, lumbering corpse of American journalism!

big pincers - 2012-07-07

misterbuns - 2012-07-07

Loaded diaper.

jreid - 2012-07-07

The entire reason for the large hadron collider was to find teenage girls.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-07-08

The joke hear is that he thinks anyone understands teenage girls better than physics.

Rudy - 2012-07-09

"God Particle" "explained"
