If someone doesn't know what MST3K is, they are incapable of friendship.

Oddly enough Mike Nelson is apparently a pretty hardcore conservative, although he doesn't say much about it publicly.

Yeah, it's pretty mindblowing that a guy who not only claims to be a Christian apologist AND a self-described neo-conservative can have anywhere remotely the sense of humor Mike Nelson does.

Is that why there's the Rifftraks/Cinematic Titanic rift? That seems as good a reason as any.

I have no idea. Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl say there's no real rift, they just can't see all working together at once anymore so they do their own things. Rumor is that some new production company Mike is heading up might be releasing future Cinematic Titanic DVDs or something, but who knows.

Oh, I should have added, though: I'm sure now things are much more awkward since Cinematic Titanic is doing more work with Josh Weinstien. Weinstein was on the original MST (first season or so) as the original assistant to Dr. Forrester. He also somehow managed to assume the trademark rights to MST when it went off the air. He then proceeded to sue Mike Nelson and several other people associated with the show for giving the rights to Rhino home video to put out the episodes. He won his suit and then re-negotiated with Shout Factory to release the home videos for which only he gets paid for. Mike Nelson and the rest of MST3k (including Joel, I think) don't see any money out of it anymore, or very little. He then sued for the right to be the only person who can ever make use of the MST characters or references to MST, so when he got those rights, the first thing he did was make a shitty web cartoon with the robots, but no other characters.
He then sued Mike etc. AGAIN when they started doing The Film Crew because the Film Crew was being produced for Shout Factory and he argued that people would misconstrue it as an MST production since it's the MST guys making fun of movies. They said fuck it, stopped doing Film Crew, and then moved on to doing Rifftrax under the assumption it was lawsuit proof. Not to be outdone, when Cinematic Titanic emerged on the radar, Weinstein sued Mike etc AGAIN claiming that the pre-packaged Rifftrax features and live events somehow intrude on his copyright. He lost that one.
