I wanted to submit a Nixie Pixel video to present a contrast with the Maxim gamer girls. As a geek girl, I consider Nixie to be a lot more authentic. I chose this video because it was the first thing that came up when I went to her site., and because it ties in with the discussion I found here:

about how the financial demands are killing game development, and because I thought most of you would be able to relate to it more than her Ubuntu tutorials, which is what I love about her. Nixie introduced me to Kdenlive, my go-to video editor.
If you're Nixie Pixel, or any one of millions of people who would be running full open source if not for gaming, this is a project to get legitimately excited about. That's probably why it came up first when i went to her site. Attracting a lot of money isn't going to solve all the problems, but you can be sure that whatever real obstacles it's going to face aren't going to be technical, they're going to have to do with the realities of the marketplace. So a lot of money is.... well, good. It's definitely good.

This Ouya thing has "The Phantom" written all over it. There's no working prototypes, no visual evidence the thing even exists outside of concept, and the developers are saying it wouldn't even be on the market until something like 2014 at the very earliest.
The first announced "game" for it (some zombie thing, how original) has a tentative release date of 2015.
By that time, Ice Cream probably won't even be the Droid OS.

What you just described is a project in development, like any other. Not all projects succeed, including those initiated by Microsoft and Apple. The developers can't predict the future, Nixie can't predict the future, neither can I, and neither can you. Anybody who doesn't know that doesn't know much. I'm certainly not pledging anything myself.
However, if they were claiming a machine that turns lead into gold, or garbage into clean electricity, you'd need to have a working prototype, but a machine that runs games on Android is not magic. It's a repackaging of existing technology. If they get the resources, they're going to be able to build the machine, and then it's all going to be up to the buyers and the developers.
Unless it's a swindle. I'm not saying that it isn't, but are you saying that it is? You're not saying that, are you? Because it's got a release date two years in the future?

memedumpster - 2012-07-20 I do think this console would be great, especially for independent developers (the ones who can afford an Android license), but there are concerns.
The rest of the industry, I hear, is planning to phase out consoles. What habitat will this thing live in? The versatility of the delivery system for the games will be vital to the consumer and the developer, especially if you have to learn some kind of bastard poorly documented API to be able to port a game to it, through it, for it, or because of it.
We all know the video game industry sucks for everyone in it from CEOs of companies to players (only the people who write the theme songs don't want to kill themselves), so all video game promises come with the same amount of salt required to send your cyborg across a wasteland only guarded by Jean Claude Van Damme. It has about those odds of surviving even if it knows six kinds of roundhouse kick. It's hard to have faith.
I don't think this is a swindle, just some amazingly brave and no doubt drunk on cash right now programmers and bouncers trying to live the dream of making a redundant product. It better get NetFlix.
Make no mistake, if this thing comes to exist at that price I'll get one.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-07-20 It's a redundant product, but it's a new platform, and it's the platform that counts. I've been using the Linux Desktop for ten years, and the market share has always been tiny, but developers have been able to have at it because of the open source code, and so the rate of development has been pretty amazing, maybe even a little annoying at this point. It seems like the idea is to free up game development in the same way.
