I think it's easy to forget that the original live series intended to be over the top campy...

I have to believe that one day people will look back at todays film and make fun of how dark, moody and angsty we made everything...

misterbuns - 2012-07-24

One day?

Also this parody had better fight choreography than any Nolan Batman film.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-07-24

Bale's batman voice alone ruins most of the movies for me. I still find Batman: Mask of the Phantasm the best of the films thus far.

dead_cat - 2012-07-24

Finally, I feel like Ican say that I hated the Nolan movies. Between all the pointless angst and super DARK and EDGY EVERYTHING!, being more than two hours long for NO FUCKING REASON LET'S JUST CRAM AS MUCH SHIT INTO THESE FUCKERS AS WE CAN, and Bale's Batman voice, I just couldn't ever get into them.

In the Batman comics in the 1960s, Batman wasn't a shadowy figure who knew to prey on criminals' superstitious cowardly nature; he was pretty much a public figure who might be seen driving around in daytime, looking for clues at a crime scene or fighting with thugs. Not too far removed from the TV series, except the TV series played it for laughs.

The 1960s also had Aunt Harriet living at Wayne Manor, and Alfred was dead at the time. Such lengths they went to, to prove that Batman and Robin can't be gay for each other.

My favorite innovation of the 1960s was Batman's special finger-talking code he shared with Robin. When they needed to converse covertly they'd just waggle their fingers; this was usually depicted in the comics with a close-up of their two hands, with jagged word balloons coming out of each hand.

I'm guessing that the whole "public hero" thing was also a holdover from comics like The Spirit and Dick Tracy, as Batman was largely seen as a detective. Criminals were just bank robbers and kidnappers, not psychos that threatened lives all that much.

It's one of the many things about Batman that's harder to swallow in this day and age, too: If he goes out on patrol every night, even with a ton of secret entrances and exits to the Batcave all over Gotham, someone would eventually find where he hangs out and who he is, probably inside of three months.

As far as I know, it's still canon that the JLA has teleportation tech. Why doesn't he just use that to get around, or at least to put his car/boat/plane away when he's done?

Arkham City is based on the comics. Batman is referred to as the world's greatest detective. I found him a lot more likeable than the current movie franchise.

Quad9Damage - 2012-08-04

Tim Drake discovered Batman's identity and found his way into the Batcave by doing his own detective work. It's how he became Robin # 3.

Bane (in the comics) figured out who Bruce Wayne was simply by watching him move.

It happens more often than you think.

Returning to the comics as a grown ass man after covid hit, one of the things I've learned is that Dick Grayson became an adult here called Nightwing, and he seems to be pretty cool, one of the least angsty and tormented characters in the whole Batman Universe. There have been other Robins, and they're more complicated, but Dick became maybe Bruce's one and only success as a family man. For Dick, it looks like growing up fighting crime turned out to be therapeutic somehow.

duck&cover - 2012-07-24

Holy brain hemorrhage, Batman! Satisfying to see 60's Robin get smacked.

dead_cat - 2012-07-24

Yes, fuck that needle-voiced shit. I never got his deal with dressing up so the bad guys can see him at night.

duck&cover - 2012-07-24

Didn't Batman give him the costume? Robin the Boy Decoy.

dead_cat - 2012-07-24

Robin was Batman's revenge for Bruce Wayne having to adopt a goddamn kid in an attempt to improve his image, after some douche posted cellphone-camera footage of him running over a bunch of hookers while driving drunk.

The Mothership - 2012-07-24

Andy Dick tag.

Old_Zircon - 2012-07-24

This is about the only way a modern Batman movie could be even vaguely watchable.

Blue - 2012-07-24

What the shit? Why the fuck is his name Robin? What the fucking fuck does that even mean? Are you trying to tell me he's going to be Batman's sidekick? What the shitting shit would that even mean? Is he going to dress up as a Dick and interrupt crimes and tell them about how he'd totally kick their asses if Batman were also there?

I know what you're trying to say, movie but you're dumb as shit.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-07-25

They have two official answers: Robin's favorite boyhood hero was Robin Hood, and apparently his trapeze artist mother used to say he "flew like a robin" in the circus tent.

IrishWhiskey - 2012-12-26

The first one makes some sense, but who says "flew like a robin" in reference to gymnastics? Robins aren't known for being more graceful than any other bird.

Really the whole movie made remarkably little sense, even for superhero movies. Like with Inception, Nolan likes complex plots with twists, but doesn't care much if it can withstand even basic questioning as to how characters do things and why.
