The vast majority of people I've met who are medical marijuana patients (not in California, but still) are absolutely, unambiguously taking medicine. But, you know, they should just cowboy up and take that cancer like real men, right?

About 130 million doses of pain medication are prescribed every year and for many marijuana is healthier and poses less danger of abuse than the commonly prescribed alternatives, not to mention it's use in treating loss of appetite, depression, and diseases like colitis.

There aren't 500,000 people in California taking it for medical reasons, there's likely even more than that, but the official sources are expensive, unreliable, and come with a lot of paperwork for a plant that easily grows in the backyard.

Like Zircon, the people I've known with prescriptions were genuine medical users with serious conditions. They were the only ones who'd bother, since for recreational users it doesn't make sense to go to the official sources when it's available for cheap down the street.

Of course the drug and prison industries are paying a lot of money to ensure poor people who want access to cheap non-patented drugs keep going to prison, while wealthy Republicans pop oxycodine like tic-tacs without consequence. Both Romney and Obama are corrupt on this issue, but Romney is displaying his trademark lack of understanding of human compassion here.

There's a lot of people that use medical marijuana to avoid going to jail. However, that doesn't change the reality that there are many, many people that need it as medicine.

Those people are real. I know them. They have the right to use marijuana and yes, their voices should be heard. Why the fuck wouldn't we put forward the people that are most affected by these laws?

Your argument seems to be that 1) since not all medical marijuana users are legitimate, none are. 2) Preventing a nonlegitimate user from obtaining marijuana is worth depriving a legitimate user.

Having said that, Romney probably gave this guy more time than some presidential candidates would have. It''s a relative thing, but he told him what his views were and left it there. Dude could probably have done worse.

My ex roommate, who was a complete douchebag, had a prescription for "anxiety" so "he could sleep at night." A lot of people have bullshit prescriptions.

That having been said, cancer patients have been clinically proven to respond to cannibis positively and science has long known cannibis to be a beneficial and non toxic painkiller.

I think it should be treated as medicine, and prescribed as such. It's not necessary to make it illegal, it won't hurt anyone. Except the tobacco industry, which doesn't want any competition from a drug that doesn't cause cancer but actually relieves symptoms from it.

A friend of mine who happened to be a single mother (father ran out during the pregnancy) was laid off and wound up killing herself after her unemployment insurance ran out... finding a job that allows you to take a two-year-old with you is... well, difficult.

She killed herself in February and the child, now five, is in a foster home.

I can maybe dimly understand the logic of cutting off the mother. Not really 100%, but I sort of follow you. You know, Mitt Romney may be a decent guy. After all, he invented Obamacare. But running for President as a Republican in the 21st century requires a certain amount of horribleness.
