Evil motherfuckers indeed.

Everyone else: Eh, fuck if I know.

Toenails - 2012-08-20

Yeah, we had that during our primaries in Kansas, which were a pretty big deal since Governor Brownback got involved with some Republican Senate races and was attempting to replace some moderates with huge conservatives so that the hard-liners control both chambers.

He was largely successful.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-08-20

I read this as "Cockblock the vore". This site has ruined me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-08-20

This is not a drill. This is no NWO "911 is an inside Job" conspiracy theory. This is no fake birth certificate controversy. This is really happening in front of our eyes. The party of Lincoln is making the election irrelevant. If the polls we're seeing are based on likely voters based on previous elections, it's all over. Romney wins.

i take no joy in this. I'd love to believe that I could live out the remaining 15-30 years of my life growing old in the relatively free, morally complex country I grew up in. If the Republican party succeeds in subverting two presidential elections in twelve years, and moves to consolidate its power, I'm going to be forced to do whatever a responsible citizen does during a fascist takeover.

I don't know what that is yet, but someone will have some interesting ideas.

Toenails - 2012-08-20

Romney is not going to win... not even if he had a thousand years to prepare. He will ultimately lose and then turn out to be a kinda-sorta human being that people can actually identify with. Mark my words.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-08-21

Regardless of who wins, it's indeed infuriating and terrifying that a poll tax is being implemented in this day 'n age.

But JHM, you're ready to be "forced to do whatever," eh? Oh you doughy beard, you ready to be Revolution Man? See you then.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-08-21

Haha, no, of course it doesn't, and what an entirely stupid thing to ask! Good job! Wearing clothes is nothing at all like adding a bunch of bureaucratic hurdles to voting so that the "wrong kind of people" can't vote.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-08-21

^That post in wrong subthread.

lordyam - 2012-08-20

i have been asked to show a photo id everytime i've ever voted; whether it was local or federal. 20 bucks gets you a state issued id right? what else does this law require? does it really come down to not getting your license or state id?

dead_cat - 2012-08-20

What papers did your state require for you to get a photo ID? A lot of people out there don't have those, or they do, but their name has changed since then.

lordyam - 2012-08-20

there are ways to get copies of those documents. personal example, following katrina i needed to get copies of my birth certificate and social security card to get my license (to cash pay checks and file for assistance) which was lose during my evacuation. it was a pain in the ass but i managed; realize that the hospital i was born at no longer exist. as for the name being changed, if it was done legally than there should be a paper trail. just because people call him sting doesnt change the fact his name is gordon. it still comes down to just not having an id? does the law require anything else besides the ability to identify yourself?
note: im not for or against this law. i do think you should be able to identify yourself- its just makes common sense to me.
i am also disturbed by how the 'conservatives' are making this out to be the only way they can defend their 'way of life' from being destroyed by the atheist liberal nigger loving, gun hating, baby killing socialist agenda being put forth by this kenya born reptilian president.

Toenails - 2012-08-20

Damn son, you got 20 bucks I can borrow? I sure would like to get one of those I.D. things everyone is talking about.

Also, it's eight bucks in Kansas, but they'll wave the cost if you bend over backwards to prove you don't have the money for it. THANKS KOBACH!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-08-20

In order to get a birth certificate, i had to visit city hall of the town where I was born and pay ten dollars. I don't know what it would have taken if I'd had to do it by mail, how much it would have cost, or more importantly, how long it would take.

According to MOTHER JONES, Texas allows you to use a concealed handgun license as proof of identity at the polls, but not a university ID.

Everybody who drives has photo ID and nearly everyone who doesn't is poor. So if an ID is 20 bucks, that means that poor people AND ONLY POOR PEOPLE are going to have to pay 20 bucks in order to vote.

And that's not an unintended consequence. It's what it's designed to do. The main thing to understand is that the purpose is to change the outcome of the election. In Pennsylvania, we have the Republican who created the law saying so on camera.

http://www.rnla.org/votefraud.asp

And it serves no purpose. Go to the website of the Republican National Lawyer's Association, and you'll see a whole long list of voter fraud stories, and they nearly all have the same handful of verbs: "charged" "alleged" "said". Lots of accusatiojn and innuendo, but none of it ever seems to pan out. Except for stories of felons and noncitizens registering and voting. There are some of those, but guess what? Felons and noncitizens can have photo ID, so that's not going to change.

dead_cat - 2012-08-20

JHM, there is one area of voting which does have an actual problem with fraud (as in, it happens, is known to happen, and voter fraud by absentee is far easier and more efficient than voter-impersonation fraud anyway), and that's absentee voting. Wouldn't you know it, none of these voter ID laws do anything about THAT issue.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-08-21

A solution without a problem.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-08-21

Except that poll taxes are unconstitutional. You cannot be forced to pay ANY fee or tax in order to vote. Having to buy a photo ID is being forced to pay a fee to vote.

craptacular - 2012-08-21

you're also forced to buy clothes to wear to the voting booth if you don't want to be arrested for public indecency. does that count too?

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-08-21

Haha, no, of course it doesn't, and what an entirely stupid thing to ask! Good job! Wearing clothes is nothing at all like adding a bunch of bureaucratic hurdles to voting so that the "wrong kind of people" can't vote.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-08-21

Or find it more difficult, onerous, burdensome (because it is, asshole).

FABIO - 2012-08-21

How many "too cool for capital letters" idiots are we going to get for this comment section?

Ursa_minor - 2012-08-21

i dunno man at least one more

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-08-21

YOU HAVE TO BE REALLY COOL TO GET AWAY WITH ALLCAPS.

Simillion - 2012-08-21

This country depresses me. I am voting in an obama state. I have no say in the outcome.

Which means what, I have to reach out to people on shitty states like these and plead to them to vote for Obama? Since, you know, the electoral college system isn't going to be disbanded anytime soon.

Fuck that. I have my own damn life. This country goes to hell, and I'm bugging out. Me and everyone I love, there aren't many of them. So fuck you all.

Bush the third, Mormon edition. You should have learned your lesson by now, fucktards. Vote for Obama and stop bitching about it.

Simillion - 2012-08-21

Meh, take it back. I won't leave, even if. Do a shitload more overseas work, or just take long vacations if I can, fuck, whatever. or, Only work in forward thinking cities that have savvy means of isolating themselves from Federal influence, there are several of those. Expecting huge increases in the homeless population. if Mit wins, there won't be a republican I won't just fucking laugh at for it until the day I die. This whole world has long since been spiraling down. Oh, and fuck you anarchists too, fucking morons. all you assholes do is give us more fucking work and no gain. Big problems take big ideas, and no, a return to our ass raping roots isn't it. Fuck I'm grumpy today.
