I choose to believe this is the first expression of the Singularity. Given what's on the Internet, that can't be far from the truth.

Xenocide - 2012-08-22

This is the most internet video I've ever seen.

Ghoul - 2012-08-22

This is the first internet video that I have ever forwarded to my grandma. That ought to show her.

StanleyPain - 2012-08-22

I don't like this show, but I approve of cats remaking the themes to shows I don't watch/like.

chairsforcheap - 2012-08-22

the show is amazing and the books are better

Hooker - 2012-08-22

The show is not bad and the books are pretty bad.

chairsforcheap - 2012-08-22

explain

Binro the Heretic - 2012-08-22

I find the show to be decent enough. Based on what I've heard from friends who have read the books, I have no desire to read them myself.

Apparently, in the books, there are even more of the things I do not like about the show. (i.e. rape, incest, incest rape, all involving victims EVEN YOUNGER than those depicted in the show)

Also, it would seem the "good" (i.e. less evil, somewhat sympathetic) guys just get hammered with misery and woe while the bad guys always escape justice.

Again, this is based on what I've heard from people who tried to get me to read the books years ago and actually talked me into giving the show a chance.

I've only watched the first season. I'm waiting for the second on video so I can sit down and watch it all in one shot. I hope Daenerys eventually has her dragons rape Joffrey to death, but they'll probably just kill off Tyrion or something else soul-crushing.

Hooker - 2012-08-22

I don't find the sex stuff a problem. It's not presented in a way that you're supposed to feel any vicarious joy in it or whatever. There's no Fifty Shades of Grey-kind of descriptions of what happens. The events are explained and are there, clearly, to build character's motivations and depict a really awful, dangerous world.

As for why I don't like the books, there are a number of reasons, but I'll stick to what I think are the worst three. First, I find the characters to be completely flat in all five books. I actually like the first book, though, since it doesn't have the next two problems.

-- Spoilers from here --

The second problem, and probably the worst problem, is that the narrative keeps slowing down more and more. If you total up the important plot points in the first book, I think it would exceed the important points of the most recent two books combined. Tyrion starts book 5 looking for Danerys and doesn't get there by the end. The dragons are put in a cage and don't escape until the end. Bran gets plugged into a tree and that's over. Stannis sets out for Winterfell and never arrives. Book 4 is hardly any better. Sam sets out for Oldtown and doesn't get there. Sansa goes to the Eyre and that's it. Asha tried to win the kingsmoot and then doesn't. It's all boring and it takes forever.

The third problem is that Martin seems to delibrately skip important scenes. I have no idea why. Possibly because they're hard to write? The most outrageous example would be near the end of the third book, a Danerys chapter ends with the cliffhanger of Barristan and Jorah are sent off to capture Mereen alone, and the next chapter begins with Mereen having already been captured.

lordyam - 2012-08-22

i agree with all three points you make, the 'cliff hanger' at the end of EVERY chapter made reading the fourth and fifth book feel like i was walking through mud. however when it comes to trash fiction, at like 500 pages, and a nice lil appendex in the back, i have enjoy them a lot and am looking forward to the next book and season two on dvd.

StanleyPain - 2012-08-23

I tried reading the first book but just couldn't get into it. It seemed like an embarrassing attempt to take high fantasy tropes and make them all serious with a dollop of gravitas and lots of violence and sex and dumb, boring as fuck politics which I guess for some reason some people really like instead of cool dragons and orcs and shit fighting dark elves which is usually what fantasy books offer.
So, I dunno...I think sometimes those RA Salvatore books can be silly, but they're at least 50 times more entertaining than some neckbeard's weird rape fantasies masked as "serious literature" by taking the teleplays for The Sopranos and putting it in ye olde medievale lande or whatever. Martin seems like a male Laurell K Hamilton.

chairsforcheap - 2012-08-23

Hooker's got it right, pretty much, though I probably enjoy the books more than you have (u snob). I am reeeeeeeally hoping that he stops trying to tie the goddamn strings together in the next book and flings it back into action... I'm looking forward to the HBO version of feast for crows / dance with dragons though, because of the crazy shit that happens. I think certain characters are flat, but definitely not all of them (like what the FUCK was the point of Quentyn Martell??)

Quad9Damage - 2013-02-21

I've read the first book and I'm currently a little over halfway through the second. I started this series several years after suffering through Terry Goodkind's first two bricks.

Here's the thing about GRRM that I've noticed: his books have graphic violence. They have rape. And some incest. They have a 13-year-old girl being given to a near 30-year-old barbarian warlord as a gift, scenes of them fucking, and her ending up knocked up.

But the difference between Goodkind and Martin is that, despite all those things being terrible, Martin is so much more *subtle* about it. When awful things happen in his books, he lets us know and then moves on. By contrast, in "Sword of Truth" there was either an almost-rape, a full-on rape, or the likes of an 8-year-old being kicked in the fucking face every 30-50 pages, and I couldn't have been more grossed out. I can deal with what Martin has written (so far). Whenever I read Goodkind it felt like he was whispering his darkest fantasies in my ear before jerking off all over the open book.

feathersfall - 2012-08-22

I watched for you.

dead_cat - 2012-08-23

I don't care enough about Game of Thrones to watch the TV series, much less read the books -- besides, I'm waiting for someone to re-shoot episodes with cats as the actors. Then I'd care, though the shame involved would probably kill me.
