As far as "The Life of Brian" goes, you have to be watching with the intention of being offended if you fail to notice that Brian is a normal guy MISTAKEN for the Messiah.

It's the greatest irony in the world that the people who have dedicated themselves to a piece of literature so frequently miss the point of art. The movie ends with a song with the lyrics, "You'll see it's all a show \ Keep 'em laughing as you go. \ Just remember that the last laugh is on you" and they think they can impress upon them that death is no laughing matter.

Ultimately, the hilarity of the controversy over Life of Brian is that the movie isn't even about Jesus and it isn't a particularly strong satire of religion, it's more just an excuse for historical-themed Monty Python skits. The fact that so many people pretended to be outraged by it proves they never watched the movie or even understood what it was about. To this day, the strongest and best loved bits from this film don't even have anything to do with religion. Even the end song, which is legendary now, has nothing to do with Christianity or Jesus or anything and when totally removed from the context of the movie it is totally self-contained in its humor.

It's not a particularly weak satire of religion, either. It doesn't attack religion theologically, but in practice.
Anyway, the video was interesting. Absolutely shit debate though.

Oh, it's also worth mentioning in this thread, for those who are unaware, that Malcolm Muggeridge is essentially responsible for the "creation" of Mother Teresa. His documentary about her work in Calcutta in the 60s resulted in her massive leap in stardom and fame and introduced the myth that the documentary footage had been filmed in "unfilmable" conditions and then rendered visible by the hand of God, when in fact, it was the cameraman using a low-light film.
