This and most of what people who learned about it through crossover artists and the recent industry media feeding frenzies call "dubstep" is actually "filthstep," which is an offshoot that emphasizes the heavily filtered, harsh bass lines as much as possible and is mostly garbage. Dubstep proper is pretty much ambient music with a beat, happened about a decade ago, and frequently sounds nothing like this (although a lot of it is bad too, but still not as bad as most big-name radio rock from the past 30 years). This is an offshoot of a revival of dubstep.

Actually what most people consider filthstep is, in fact, a watered-down version of the dirtstep off-shoot mudstep, which is itself really just a cleaned-up version of groundstep which was originally called shoestep or, more properly, footstep. Personally I find footstep unlistenably simplistic compared to the rhythmic complexity of bootstrap, which is actually just a bullshit teenybopper version of buttstrap, or its smarter cousin chinstrap, aka pinstripe, which hipsters call punstripe, and skaters know as stuntpipe, which is just a top-40 bastardization of fratbag, douchestep, hardbottom, funnelhop, munchbutton, wordname, soundtalk, pointgrunt, nngh, buh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh...
