Almost every major figure in the Republican party is backing away from and/or condemning this speech and, as of my writing this, even the wingnut head of the Family Research Council has said how ridiculous it was to say Obama "sympathizes" with the attackers. I have never seen so many people who, just days ago were totally with Romney on the most brazen, ludicrous shit, just drop him like a hot potato.

Toenails - 2012-09-12

I really thought that I heard on NPR today that Romney himself (or an aide) walked back that statement. All I'm getting on the Google is that he doubled-down.

Also, I went to NPR's website and am pleased to find out that tea-tards have a bigger presence than I would have ever dreamed of.

StanleyPain - 2012-09-12

My statement in regards to him losing the election is not that he will lose votes based solely on the contents of this statement; clearly most of his supporters don't give a shit. HIs voter base, however, would probably not think to well of Romney when even his major conservative base are saying what a fucking disgusting prick he is. It can very well take the wind out of the sails which, I think personally is what happened to McCain in 08 and why he lost by such a huge margin; not so much that his supporters suddenly voted for Obama, but rather they lost all desire to vote for McCain.

Yesterday even Fox News cut away from a speech he was giving to a National Guard event when it became his speech was veering into campaign territory despite him having promised he would not make campaign-style speeches on 9/11 or 9/12. No major news network carried the speech in its entirety; all networks stopped covering it once he brought up 9/11 and then continued with other soft news.

Paracelsus - 2012-09-13

Here's another reason he's going to lose. There's no heart of values to the campaign for everyone to use as a common language. Even the values they claim are chosen to appease the most crazed of their constituents, and they don't message those particularly well either. I agree with what people have been saying here. There's just no reason to vote affirmatively for Romney, so this actually makes very little difference. It's just evidence of what we already know is a desperate and failing campaign.

IrishWhiskey - 2012-09-12

It's a stumble that reflects their desperate style of attacks over policy, fear and anger over solutions, a far-right narrative over inconvenient facts. They haven't bothered issuing a correction or apologizing for falsely claiming the tweet came from the White House, came after the attacks, or didn't defend freedom of speech (in other words, his entire criticism). Even after Republicans roundly criticized them, the campaign just recently advised doubling down on attacks and continuing the lie rather than showing weakness.

That said, I don't think this is a single event that dooms him. He's not out of the race, it's still much closer than most elections. It's just reflective of how it is that a billionaire who's been preparing for decades for the perfect chance and is backed by a propaganda empire with nearly unlimited money, still managed to mismanage his election.

He really does feel 'entitled' to this. So much so he thinks he's under no obligation to provide policy specifics, to release his taxes, to provide a new way forward, or to in any way connect with voters and adjust himself to what they need. He's been working for this for decades, and since he's never been denied anything in his life, hasn't realized he can't have what he hasn't earned.

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-12

Facts are stupid things.

-Ronald Reagan

sosage - 2012-09-12

You can hear him kicking the tires on the White House already. He is making statements to the world with a tone that suggests he is speaking on everyone's behalf and is already in office.

With this election just hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-09-12

I couldn't even finish listening to this stupid son of a bitch. The goddamn republicans have caused enough suffering to the State Department and the Foreign Service as it is.

Billy the Poet - 2012-09-12

This didn't necessarily hurt him overall, but he badly mismanaged a golden opportunity to twang the secret racist heartstrings of the middle American voter.

1394 - 2012-09-12

What a fucking shitlord.

Wonko the Sane - 2012-09-12

^ There are more elegant ways to explain the situation, but none with so few words.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-09-12

People died, Mitt.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-16

"But Obama didn't say he was against it! That means he's for it! These really are not lies!"

- Romney, upon losing the election

Riskbreaker - 2012-09-12

You people seriously believe this will make Romney lose a lot of votes? There's a considerable ammount of people that truly believe that muslims will take over america at any moment, they see them as commies on steroids.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-12

True, but most of those people aren't big fans of Mormons, either.

Hooker - 2012-09-12

Hah. We witnessed Romney lose the 2012 election in 2008.

Paracelsus - 2012-09-12

This tasteless, tone-deaf publicity stunt reeks of desperation, as well as shocking incompetence in message management. Ugly and wrong. In this political climate, not a dealbreaker because no one is going out to vote FOR Mitt, but against the Prez.

The Great Hippo - 2012-09-12

Seriously, this guy's only job right now is to /not/ be seen as a black liberal extremist muslim anti-American neo-socialist. How can he fuck that up?

I hope he does.

joelkazoo - 2012-09-12

Might I suggest my "Aw For Fuck Sake!" tag?

TheOtherCapnS - 2012-09-12

Holy shit, ever since that compilation of him smacking his lips at the convention, I really notice that he smacks his lips a lot.

Like he has some sticky substance coating the inside of his mouth. Oh my god... they're actually right! He's a reptoid!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-13

Speaking of Mitt's lips, this event was made all the worse for him thanks to being photograped as he walked away from the podium:

Love that patrician oligarch smirk. He's the perfect mixture of Mr. Burns and the Governor from "Blazing Saddles."

Udderdude - 2012-09-12

The hits just keep on coming. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/09/12/1130870/-Vladimir-Putin-t hanks-Mitt-Romney-for-strengthening-Russia-s-anti-U-S-resolve

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-12

These guys are running a dumb campaign.

Using Obama's "you didn't build that" quote out of context is normal political opportunism, par for the course. Devoting a whole night of the convention to it is idiotic. It invites people to look up and discuss what Obama actually said, and when you know the truth, it not only makes the Republicans look dishonest, but worse, it makes them look like they don't have any real issues to talk about.

Couldn't Ryan come up with a factory that had closed WHILE OBAMA WAS PRESIDENT? Come on, it can't be that hard!

I just read an article in the Huffington Post that cites several polls indicating that Romney has lost his advantage among men, his only advantage. I read an article yesterday that says that, since the convention, negative tweets about Ryan have doubled. This is the moment when people are paying attention, and these guys are looking bad.

i THINK IT'S GOING TO GET WORSE, AND WHEN IT DOES, REMEMBER HOW THE REPUBLICANS NOMINATED THIS GUY BECAUSE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ELECTABLE.

jangbones - 2012-09-12

Not necessarily...here is a possible scenario...

Romney's camp examines the recent poll numbers (including the lack of a bump from the RNC and the larger than expected bump from the DNC) and concludes that their campaign is in real trouble. They don't think they can make any real impact with moderates, but think their best chance now is to energize their base. Their research shows that their base is mistrusting of Muslims and think Obama is weak on foreign issues, so they take this opportunity to try to hang some recent tragic news on the president.

Pareene wrote about it in Salon today and he makes some good points.

Of course, its equally plausible that the people running Romney's campaign are dipshits who royally fucked up on this one.

Udderdude - 2012-09-13

As others have pointed out, it's obvious that strategy is very short-term and will continue to dig their party into a hole that they can't get out of. They're already in pretty deep, if they keep digging, it may be impossible to escape the black hole of angry white men.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-13

The base is Romney's biggest problem. Thanks to them, even Republicans who might have once been considered moderates can't even get nominated. Before you can even get on the ballot, you've got to swear to Grover Norquist that you won't ever raise taxes under any circumstances, promise the rich and the corporations that you'll cut their taxes, and take an oath to the religious nuts that you'll try to plug every available American orifice with as much Jesus as you can (especially on women).

If it weren't for the money of people like the Kochs and their pals in oil and on Wall Street, the Republicans wouldn't be able to get anyone past the nomination stage, since all they have left is white religious fundamentalists who are willing to give their tax dollars to the rich because they hate the poor and minorities.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-13

Appealing to moderates is supposed to be Romney's job. That's why he was nominated instead of all those crazy "authentic" candidates that the base loved so much more. Romney's problem is that he can't appeal to the base and to the rest of the country at the same time. Bush could, but that was after 9/11, and he just barely pulled it off. Everything McCain did to appeal to the base (Sarah Palin) alienated him from everybody else.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-12

Ahem.

lordyam - 2012-09-13

this is not my president

memedumpster - 2012-09-13

His tone is only appropriate for eulogizing your child's dead parakeet in a back yard burial service before the cat gets it.

Mitt just can't be bothered with our childish human tragedy, but since it's here... scary black man booga booga!

takewithfood - 2012-09-13

If you think that anyone who was already planning to vote for Romney would be put off by this, you haven't been paying attention.

Tasso - 2012-09-14

What's the best way to grab for votes in a time of tragedy?

Artlessly! And with little grins in between cue cards.
