This isn't a new or radical Republican position. The "47%" complaint has been made for years by Fox and Congressional Republicans. It just got attention now because the focus is on Romney, he was already perceived as Mr. Moneybags, and he said in a clearly contemptuous way that those people were lazy entitled whiners.

There's another DS clip from late last year where Stewart has a long montage of Republicans and Fox News people decrying any tax increase on the rich as the death of America, but also saying that any tax increase should go on the poor who don't pay any (income) taxes and must be lazy and irresponsible, otherwise they'd be rich.

The technique Rove popularized for the GOP was to simply take your faults, and accuse the other guy of them without shame or regard for facts. The media is so spineless they'll report both sides rather than call you a liar, so voters just think it's a wash. They called Kerry a coward who didn't fight and said Obama wasn't born in America, because both things were true of their own candidates. Now they accuse him of class warfare. Because that's exactly what Mitt is doing, trying to promote the welfare of the rich at the expense of the poor.

I read a point raised about the Romney tape. Firstly, his position is bullshit, and we all know it. The weird thing was, the whole "lazy poor" and "they don't pay taxes" stuff was previously thought to be the party line that the inner circles and/or elites knew to be untrue, perpetuated to win elections for themselves and their allies.

The tape shows that they buy into their own brand of bullshit. They're so completely encased in this bubble they've built for themselves that they really believe all the drivel about the economy the GOP and Fox perpetuate. They're not only peddling made-up reality, they now believe it to be real.

Good old cognitive dissonance - either they have to admit they're assholes wanting more money at the expense of the poor, or they have to believe they're doing it for the good of the poor. Sooner or later it probably just became the lie that they ended up believing themselves.

No, it's a polite world where each elite family has their own Monticello; where workers ferry feasts and wine through tunnels unseen by the respectable company; where young slaves fill high quotas for fear of a whipping; where the poor you own generate an appreciable 4% per annum by birthing you additional assets.

Able-bodied parasites, when properly disciplined, would have at least some societal value as the property of a wise ruling class. Other depreciated assets may require liquidation.
