Also, am I the only person that pronounces Enjoy's name with a slightly different emphasis than the actual word "enjoy"? For some reason I put the emphasis on the first syllable instead of the second.

The guy who sent the email was a dick. Obesity is "a choice" for people with unlimited time, money, and resources, but for everybody else, it's complicated. And you know what? Telling a woman that, because of her appearance, she shouldn't be appearing in public is hurtful, and could be interested as bullying, depending on the intent of the seller. I'd certainly call it "bullying" before I'd call it "respectful". Addressing it on the air like that, depending, I suppose, on the format of this show, is indeed somewhat courageous, and a public service.


However, I find this clip painful to watch, and impossible to sit through.

Besides, he's not being mean TO her. He's not saying she's a terrible person for being an uncontrollable eatbeast. What she choses to do in the comfort of her own walk-in ice cream freezer is her own business. He's merely pointing out that, with her job being what it is, she should make an effort to be a better role model. And she should.

I think the idea of grouping any insulting disdainful condescending commentary as bullying cheapens the real issue of poor little kids being driven to suicide by consistent malicious behavior. She shouldn't have made this letter into a rant about bullying (that's just grabbing trending issues and glomming) but instead it could have been a nice short (2 minute) talk about obesity in America. Off target in other words... but on the other hand something had to be done about this letter for this show and I guess she just rushed it (possibly due to being somewhat emotional at the content of the letter, which is understandable).

To be fair, if you read aloud the average bullying e-mail, you'd have to bleep out so much of it the only words left would be "the" "you" and "fat." If you read it uncensored, the FCC fines would sink the station.

This is a great career move. If she manages to lose the weight and gets hot, she'll be on 20/20 in two years.

If she gets fatter, I hope they give her one of those chairs from Wall-E, just to make it more dramatic.

Tone trolling is one of those things that kind of exists in the swirling mists that separate normal interactions from bullying. Categorizing it is like sexing newly-hatched chickens, and everybody is convinced they are an expert at it.

That said, it's doubtful the guy who emailed her would have said anything at all if she'd been fat male news anchor instead, so yeah, I can see why such a letter-- especially one saying that her simply appearing in public is a bad thing -- would be read by a lot of people as being bullying.

"The person who sent this E-Mail was polite and didn't insult me, much. So kudos to him for that. But a lot of people are not so considerate, so let's talk for a minute about bullying."

Sure. Fucking a producer would be a solid career move too, it doesn't mean it's a particularly empowering or healthy course of action.

although who am I kidding, i don't see anything wrong with what happened here. people are just wired to destroy perceived threats to their livelihood and dignity, then hide behind the unique privileges they're afforded.

I could be more critical of her, but i can't get past the idea that this cocksucker was 'respectful' and 'polite'. He said she's too fat to be on TV. There's no such thing as saying that politely. He said there her very existence is an unwholesome influence on children. There's no such thing as saying that politely.

The email was mostly tepid and could be accused primarily of busybodying. Honestly, politeness is not a major ethical concern. It's just the cherry on top. The "especially girls" line, however, sends it plummeting into GRRRROOOOSSSSSS territory. It's like "Nation's gym teachers prefer circumcised penises." Isn't obesity just as much of a health risk for boys?

JHM, I'm not saying the guy who sent the E-Mail was a friendly, well-intentioned guy. But she's putting this guy's comments in the same category as the hatred that occasionally makes the news when teenagers show their vicious side, and there's very little similarity. So it's only right to make a point of how much of a difference there is.

If there's anything Americans enjoy more than cake frosting, it's being victimized.

I'm reminded of the "Gentle Talk" guy in Home Movies, where he was trying to tell Brendon you can basically say anything you want if you precede it with "I feel it would be in your best interest if..." before anything you say.
