This thing confused the shit out of me when I was a little kid. My dad had the record and it terrified me. Speaking of terrifying, DEAR LORD THAT COSTUME.

Old_Zircon - 2012-10-10

No time has been cool ever.

Billy the Poet - 2012-10-10

The ice age was pretty cool.

Some parts of the 70's could be considered cool in a kitsch sense.

Rick Dees, however, was never cool under any circumstances.

BHWW - 2012-10-10

The 70s were not cool, believe me I grew up in the 80s and there was plenty of leftover 70's residue around to witness.

Nikon - 2012-10-10

It's a shame no one thought to get Chris-chan to do this and include his Donald Duck impersonation.

Bort - 2012-10-10

This is what I had growing up. Kids these days have "Adventure Time".

Toenails - 2012-10-10

Somebody made that outfit and was like: "Yeah, that's pretty good, I think I'll go ahead and stop here."

More amazingly, somebody is telling their grandchildren right now: "I dressed up as the Disco Duck and danced for American Bandstand. The outfit I wore was a fucking horror show."

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-11

Given the hairstyles of the era, the duck costume doesn't rank at the bottom of the dignity-o-meter.

dead_cat - 2012-10-10

So Disco Duck was about a man who became a were-duck.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-10-11

There duck. There castle.

blue vein steel - 2012-10-10

ugh

Bort - 2012-10-11

That thing still lives, yet Goosio was taken from us.

urbanelf - 2012-10-11

They put a guy in the duck-suit who can't dance for the disco duck video.

Years back, I took a class on the history of popular music. We had this textbook- I forget what it was called, or who contributed to it, but the section on the 1970s really stood out for me. Basically, the author's contention was that the '70s should be understood as a "culture war" between disco fans and punk fans. He was pretty obviously an aging disco enthusiast in the grips of a midlife crisis; he wrote off the punks and dad rock fans as being nothing more than a pack of racist homophobic Republican-sympathizers, long since consigned to the dustbin of history. Disco, though, disco was timeless, according to him, a living force of progress n' shit, and as proof he cited the "fact" that disco was still totally awesome and not embarrassing at all.

As a small child in the 70s, I thought Disco Duck was fucking awesome, as it was both incredibly funky, and hilariously funny. It turns out I may have been a little misguided, but it all turned out ok. The end.
