"Evil Dead 2012: We Missed The Point."

This looks decidedly un-fun. Congrats on remaking a low-budget horror movie to look realistically gory while losing what Bruce Campbell brought to the table.

I'm betting the sequel to this isn't going to be anything like Army of Darkness.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-10-25

This is completely unnecessary. I thought Sam Raimi successfully blocked this, did he not?

B. Weed - 2012-10-25

IMDB credits him as a producer.

takewithfood - 2012-10-25

Campbell, too.

StanleyPain - 2012-10-25

No, Raimi sued some other film company for putting an Evil Dead 4 into production without his permission or any collaboration or anything. Raimi's been trying to get Evil Dead remade for almost 10 years with Bruce Campbell working as a producer.
I have no idea why, but there it is.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-10-25

Oh... :(

Vaidency - 2012-10-25

This is going to work about as well as Ridley Scott's attempt to remake Blade Runner. The best case scenario is he somehow manages to come up with a finished product that's as good as the original film, in which case we all just wonder what the point was. The more likely scenario is he comes up with something a lot worse that actually taints the original by association.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-10-25

What I don't get is why they didn't give this an interesting main character. Ash is fascinating to watch. These people are all pretty boring and typical horror tropes from the trailer. No cool macho exterior with sly one liners? What the hell!

I mean, fine, yeah, make money and remake this. Fine. But...Evil Dead was all Ash. He made those films work. He was a confident working class stud with over the top reactions that were comedically brilliant while retaining incredibly dark moods of horror. That's not an easy balance but it seems like they're not even attempting that here. I'm yawning.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-10-25

The answer to all questions about this movie can be given in one word: "money"

StanleyPain - 2012-10-25

The charm of the original Evil Dead was that it was made on a shoestring budget by a bunch of amateurs yet was still tremendously entertaining and creepy despite all of the things that would normally be considered flaws. Making it more violent, gory, and then using digitally graded widescreen photography is just so the textbook definition of missing the fucking point.

But whatever..the modern horror film community is such a fucking cesspool now that this will effortlessly fit in I'm sure.

Dinkin Flicka - 2012-10-25

I'm going to disagree with you all, and not just to troll. The intention of the original Evil Dead was to make an actual horror movie. It contains very little of the slapstick to come - which you all know. Their shoot went long so they used all kinds of fake shemps and different ideas, which is why the monsters look more and more hokey as the movie progresses. I'm imagining if they'd been able to stick to the schedule and budget, plus perhaps had a bigger budget and better cameras, they basically would have made something like THIS. I don't fully trust Sam Raimi for 100% quality these days (Oz sequel??) but I feel like his production on this isn't just for some quick cash that he doesn't even need. He specially picked the Uruguayan director for his aesthetic. This looks slick, but a lot of that gore is absolutely prosthetic and seems to be sticking to an old school. And even if it was CGI - did none of you enjoy Drag Me To Hell. I don't mean to be an apologist - I fucking hate remakes of horror classics as much as the rest of you, and I probably won't pay to see this - but this doesn't seem that far off course.

If this was a remake of Dead by Dawn or Army of Darkness, then I'd have more issue and agree with specific complaints made thus far. I'm retracting the beard now.

Adham Nu'man - 2012-10-25

Yeah I'm at least giving this the benefit of the doubt.

mon666ster - 2012-10-25

Dinkin gets it. The original wasn't campy, it wasn't funny. It was the "ultimate experience in unrelenting terror". The sequels, they were funny. I was opposed to this until I saw the NYCC footage (which was just blurry this). Now I'm on board.

sosage - 2012-10-25

Words have been stolen from my mouth.

Gmork - 2012-10-25

Thanks for reminding I watched Drag me to Hell, asshole. I almost forgot that I had.

Fucking obsessed with corpse water in peoples mouths. What the fuck.

StanleyPain - 2012-10-25

I'm aware that the first Evil Dead was intended as serious, I just don't think this works. I'm not opposed to revisiting Evil Dead per se, I just think that the revisitation being another generic visit to what passes for modern horror films is boring. Evil Dead was classic because of it's style and how much it earnestly tried to overcome it's limitations and when you watch it it really feels like the product of people wanting to entertain yet do something slightly outside the box of the horror movies of the time, the slasher craze. This looks like Saw 10 or something. There's nothing much that distinguishes it from the Texas Chainsaw remake or the Friday the 13th remake, or the My Bloody Valentine remake, etc...
If Raimi thinks this is how it should be, hey it's his dime. I just think Raimi, maybe after years of Hollywood, doesn't quite get why his old films like ED and Crimewave and the stuff he co-worked on like Intruder or Thou Shalt Not Kill actually became cult hits.
In a year or so, no one will remember this, but people will still be buying the original ED trilogy.

Dinkin Flicka - 2012-10-25

Just thank your lucky stars he's not so tasteless that he's taking the originals and CGI-adding all the things he wishes he could have done (perhaps the intention of this remake?), then taken the Original originals off the market.

And as for Crimewave, a movie whose production was chockfull of studio fuckery, sabotage, and axing Bruce Campbell -- if he's doing ED, I don't see why he wouldn't try a Round 2 on that one either.

garcet71283 - 2012-10-25

Just wait for the dark and gritty remake of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Riskbreaker - 2012-10-25

Part of the charm of the original was the crude special effects, they were unique and creative. Making a "gritty" looking Evil Dead is missing the entire point of the original.

Dinkin Flicka - 2012-10-25

"The charm" does not equal "the point."

Also, I happen to endorse Vaidency's comment above.

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-25

Drag me to Hell made me hopeful for Sam Raimi to continue being awesome. I totally agree with Dink's assessment of Evil Dead, but I am not hopeful for this. And mark my words... if he tries to remake evil dead 2.... I guess the newspapers will explain.

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-25

that was a five for evil (dead)

sosage - 2012-10-25

1) The series already did a remake of itself, in the one film in the series everyone seems to love. The first 20-30 minutes of ED2 is a retelling/reimagining of the events in ED1.

2) Someone is chopping their posessed arm off in the trailer, which happens in 2. This is likely a remake of both original movies.

3) My beard itches.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-25

I always found "Drag me to Hell" to be unfair. I mean, the woman gets the whammy put on her when the witch really should be upset at the bank.

It's like a McDonald's drive-thru worker getting cursed because the grill guy didn't put extra pickles on a witch's Big Mac.

Meatsack Jones - 2012-10-25

Why? Just..why?

dementomstie - 2012-10-25

I would rather see a movie version of Evil Dead: The Musical than this.

FABIO - 2012-10-25

Pretty bad timing to be releasing this after Cabin in the Woods.

garcet71283 - 2012-10-25

It would be bad timing to release any horror movies after Cabin in the Woods.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-25

We, the ancient gods, demand new rituals and new sacrifices.

We don't know what we want yet because we don't know what we like yet. We only know we're tired of the old stuff.

Just start throwing some new stuff at the wall and we'll see what sticks.

BHWW - 2012-10-25

Because this will be an obnoxiously self-consciously "clever" horror movie so meta it disappears up it's own sphincter as well?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-25

"Cabin in the Woods" was a poor attempt to make something as cool as the SCP Foundation.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-25

I think "Warehouse 13" is a much more grievous and blatant example, but "The Cabin in the Woods" did remind me a lot of SCP.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-26

Oh, definitely. Fuck Warehouse 13.

I want a show where the regulars are the scientists and every week some special guest star(s) play the doomed d-class personnel.

memedumpster - 2012-10-25

Sam Raimi : Out of ideas for so long we now should question whether he had them at all.

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-25

And at 10:00: Peter Jackson.... ok, well, same subtitle.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-25

If I drank Sterno right now, would I forget the existence of this travesty?

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-25

fuck you and also we've had extensive videos on the subject if you're not going to learn then learn not to contribute.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-25

We have?

I don't recall them for some reason.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-10-25

Remaking "Evil Dead" without Bruce Campbell is like remaking "Duck Soup" without the Marx Brothers.

NOT groovy!

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-10-25

The buttery tears of nerds over their beloved goofy horror series being written by Diablo Cody is worth all the stars in the sky.

BHWW - 2012-10-25

Except of course, Diablo Cody is terrible, despite all of the other film nerds squeaking about how any dislike of her work and her exceptionally grating, tin-eared dialogue is only because she challenges the reining film businesses old boys network of HATEriarchy or whatever.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-25

As someone who doesn't care for this, I'm not crying "buttery tears." I'm disappointed that this is being remade when the effort/money/whatever could at least occasionally try something new. I think we're over 95% of big-budget films being remakes, sequels, or based on existing franchises. You'd think horror would be a genre where someone might try finding new and interesting ways to put people through a demonic blender rather than just redoing an already existing film.

At least they're not busting the bank to make it. The budget is only ,000,000, according to IMDB. Still, you could have gotten several new takes on the horror genre for that money instead of retreading old territory.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-10-25

Buttery tears? WTF does that even mean? Tears made of butter?

Looking up Diablo Cody's work gives me hope that there will be a sense of humor involved, but good horror movies have always been rarer than pieces of the true cross.

And a bad reboot of a beloved franchise doesn't offend me nearly as much as a beloved franchise being sucked dry by too many sequels.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-10-25

I always thought the original, as well as it's sequel, were intentionally silly and comically fun low-budget movies under the guise of over-the-top horror films.

Drag Me to Hell felt way more like Evil Dead than this Evil Dead remake does.

But maybe I'm wrong. It is only a trailer, after all.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-25

I think the occasional silliness in the original "The Evil Dead" was supposed to make the horror more horrible, but it didn't quite work so they just sort of ran with it in the subsequent films of the series.

Chalkdust - 2012-10-25

releasing in April? that's... not encouraging

Billy the Poet - 2012-10-26

Anyone who pays money to see this is part of the problem.

Don Taye - 2012-10-26

I am going to pay money to see this. Good, bad, I'm the guy with 90 minutes to kill.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-10-26

I'm going to pay money to see it now, just to piss you off.

Hammer Falls - 2012-10-26

We'll see, but I'm thinking it'll join the other all ready forgotten horror remakes, like Nightmare on Elm St.
