So they have cameras on the bridge 24/7 as a sort of municipal version of Jackass? Durham, NC, you are all right by me!
|
dementomstie - 2012-10-26 I think it's more as a "So you say there wasn't a sign and you didn't know? Well here's this video, and there's the clearance sign clearly visible. Lawsuit denied!"

I saw this happen once near my old work to one of those boxy delivery trucks. It was the loudest noise I've ever heard.

bopeton - 2012-10-25 And when they finally pulled the bodies from the twisted, burning wreck...

exy - 2012-10-26 It looked.. just.. like..

Wonderful. 1:54 was especially perfect.

"Subscribe or the bridge will die."
What? Ok.

Best one by far is 1:00
Back when I worked at a thrift shop in Boston, we delivered used couches and such around to folks who ordered them. My bosses' mom - a tiny, ancient asian woman - decided to try to deliver a load of three couches stacked on top of each other, along with a table and four chairs, all strapped together. As she dared the Storrow Drive tunnel the top couch smashed into the side of the bridge, essentially bringing the entire back half of the truck off. I am astounded that nobody died.

|
jangbones - 2012-10-25 those collisions are remarkably violent...I was driving more than 100 feet behind a panel truck that clipped an overpass and I seriously had a moment where I thought I was going to die

RockBolt - 2012-10-25
I know a concrete archway bridge outside of Knoxville that has a NO UHAUL TRUCKS! sign and a lot of chips out of the edges all along the permitter

My dad did this once with an ICBM. Ha ha ha.

That's a very well-made bridge, though perhaps it should have been a foot or so higher.

Eh, just a little off the top please.
|
dementomstie - 2012-10-26 I just saw that one of the categories is "Trailers". I now give my stars to that alone.
|
exy - 2012-10-26
Not long ago at all, I drove across the country along interstates. I noticed then that all the overpasses that I went under were in the 15-16 feet high range. I thought to myself, "Oh, I guess maybe the standard height for fitting under overpasses must be about 15 feet. Ok, good to know, trivia-wise, how tall tractor-trailers are." Filed it away in the old brain box. Felt like a minisculely bigger person for it. Now I know that never happened to Durham's civil engineers.
The following refers to the video, not a comparison of myself to Durham's civil engineers. It can, however, also be read in reference to those engineers as a direct commendation.
Fabulous.

ANybody else ever bail hay or straw and was incredibly impressed with the second truck to go through at about 54 seconds? because that farmer should be fucking proud.

While fun to watch, it's hardly surprising. That's a railroad bridge. If it can support a train loaded with freight, it can easily shear the top off of just about anything.
|
godot - 2012-10-26 "So frequently do trucks crash into the 11-foot-8 clearance trestle, that the railroad company installed a crash beam in front of it. This massive steel I-beam bears the brunt of the impact, protecting the structure that supports this fairly busy railroad track. Believe it or not - they already had to replace the beam once!"
|
Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-10-25
Steel structures are so strong I think it actually confounds our natural assumptions about materials. There was a single I-beam taking all those hits (its there for just that purpose, not even part of the bridge proper) It can take the incredible momentum of an 18 wheeler careering down the road and *not even bend!*
