Old_Zircon - 2012-11-02

I distinctly remember unemployment being higher than this under Bush, around when I graduated from college.

Nikon - 2012-11-02

It's pretty shameless.

I hope that Mittens isn't being sworn in next Tuesday.

Triggerbaby - 2012-11-02

Of course he won't be. Swearing in happens in January.

baleen - 2012-11-02

Obama has bounced back in the polls (as if that matters). The only pollsters who seem to think he's behind nationally are Rasmussen, and Gallups +6 point early October lead has been erased, so stop being so down in the dumps.

Just get out there and vote for Jill Stein.
Just kidding.

I just realized that it's easy to write "Kill Stein" instead of Jill Stein, which, if she were ever elected, would probably cause a lot of headaches.

Hodge - 2012-11-02

I could very well be incorrect but If I recall correctly Rasmussen was the most accurate poll in 2008. But like you suggested pollsters haven't historically been reliable. My perspective is that right now both Romney and Obama are neck and neck and that this election could easily go either way.

STABFACE - 2012-11-02

Hodge, you are indeed wrong. Rasmussen was consistently an outlier of 5 to 10 points in favor of McCain, so much so that Nate Silver considered removing it completely from his poll model.

Speaking of which, Silver (who correctly predicted 49 states in 2008 and a huge percentage of House and Senate seats in 2010) has Obama at a 80% chance of winning next Tuesday. http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/nov-1-the-simp le-case-for-saying-obama-is-the-favorite/

Which is sort of amazing historically because on paper Generic Republican should be wiping the floor with Obama. But Generic Republican isn't running this time around: All they've got is Mittens.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-11-02

Some months ago, Rasmussen declared that a contest between Obama and Ron Paul would be too close to call. More than the results, the fact that they're asking the question tells you all you need to know.

Dr Robot - 2012-11-02

Old Zircon, you're right. There was a huge dropoff in 2001, when I was coming out. I was really lucky to have been hired right before the brunt of the crash hit. Kids one year behind me with better grades and connections couldn't get the same kind of job I managed to land.

Toenails - 2012-11-02

Speaking of polling...

I talked to a roommate of mine about how we should do the elections like the NCAA brackets... predict the winners and losers and whoever is the closest wins.

I suggested that we should also include the tallies in each state (i.e. In Kansas R: 85% O: 15%), but he says that's not needed, just pick the winners and losers and the tiebreaker can be how close you are at predicting the popular vote.

Does this sound like a good idea? Any suggestions?

fatatty - 2012-11-02

Unemployment was around 7.8% when Bush left office. Then it proceeded to drop and drop and drop to around 10% in his first few months as our economy continued to tank from the financial collapse. Obama's policies have given us higher growth than during Bush's years to get unemployment back to where it was when he took office.

If you just say it was at 8% then and it's still there now, it sounds like he's done absolutely nothing in 4 years. And that's exactly the point.

baleen - 2012-11-02

It only takes 40 guys to chip in a billion and you can buy an American presidency through SuperPACs!!

"I jumped off my roof and broke my leg. My doctor gave me some treatment for it but it's taking too long to go back to normal. I'm going to try jumping off my roof again and see if that leads to a faster recovery."

takewithfood - 2012-11-02

"I wasn't in any pain when I climbed up onto the roof, I wasn't in any pain while I was falling through the air, but when I woke up in the hospital, boy was I in pain! This whole recovery has been nothing but pain and medical bills. This is all my doctor's fault!"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-11-02

Desperately scary ads on the eve of the election is about as "Old Normal" as it gets.

memedumpster - 2012-11-02

The new normal is having a completely sewn up set of politicians incapable of managing a JC Penny running the most powerful death merchant war empire on earth for the aggrandizement of non-sentient greed drones.

I'm shocked it's been normal this long without a nuclear holocaust.
