We were talking about blacksploitation movies in a film class, and the professor asked me "What was Dolemite's job?" (he was trying to point out how black men in those movies were always either pimps or drug dealers) And I with all sincerity said "fucking up motherfuckers"!

I saw this in an exploitation theater in the early 80s. I can't remember how it worked, but somehow my gf and I didn't know what we were going to see. Like all white folks before VCRs, we'd never heard of Dolemite, and we fucking loved it.

Years later, what an abundance of treasures! The outfits! The corny jokes ("Nigger, where your balls AT?" "In Vietnam!") The seventies locations! The handmade credits! The acting that's really bad, but still looks like fun! The inexplicable "instant replay"! The idiosyncratic nightclub acts! The ass on that dancer! And I've only seen the first 45 minutes.

Back in the theater, when there was the sex scene between Dolemite and Hurricane Annie, there was a hilariously crude jump cut. As Dolemite starts to move south on Annie, there was an abrupt cut to Dolemite in a restaurant, dressed in a three piece suit, sitting at a table all by himself, eating fried chicken, and then-- bang-- back to the bedroom. Tragically, I've never seen this scene in a version for home video. I don't think it's in this version, but I haven't reached that point yet.
