Rural Oregon is also incredibly racist.

California in general is as racist and conservative as it comes. I'm sure rural Oregon is too, but it felt a lot better in Eastern Oregon than it did in Northeastern California when I spent a month traveling around both areas last June. Rural Cali felt even worse than rural Nevada, and was the only place where I've ever been hassled by rednecks in my life.

The thing about bigotry is, nobody really thinks they're a bigot; bigotry is unjustified contempt for one's inferiors, emphasis on "unjustified". But nobody thinks their own feelings are unjustified. Thus, bigots think they're just telling it like it is, and the PC Bandwagon is on a witch hunt.

I once confronted a severely classist friend about her bigotry and you could have filled a bingo card with all the completely typical responses and excuses she gave me.

"Classist? Is that even a thing?"
"I can't be classist, I did volunteer work with the poors once."
"You just can't take a joke."
"They probably say mean things about me, too."
"If I was a dirty poor and someone made fun of me I wouldn't be offended."
"Some of my best friends are poors!"
"It's not like I'm racist."

A band member posted some throwaway joke on a local message board about Bush being assassinated back in 2005 and the FBI put out a warrant for him in less than 12 hours, he ended up having to turn himself in a couple days later and explain the joke to them, at which point they let him go. I'm still not sure how I feel about stuff like this. On the one hand it's understandable but on the other hand it feels like a dangerously grey area in terms of free speech.

Friend of my brother called the Bush House in the middle of the night once to say "Bush is doing a helluva' job." Secret Service was at his door in less than 12 hours.

As someone who likes to pretend to be the stereotypes the other party says I am online, I wouldn't be amused if the government thought I was that insane and wanted to know why I keep calling for the extermination of white people.

That being said, religious conservatives are hostile and dangerous to not just the president, but to everyone, including themselves, in ways that have been demonstrated (political terrorism, hate crimes, conspiracy to overthrow government, it's all there), so it's hard to not want them oppressed as much as possible. I'm not a home grown terrorist, but I play one on poeTV, so the real thing causes a knee jerk reaction in me that's a blend of horror and the want for someone, anyone, to take action.

There's a law against issuing terrorist threats, and a law advocating violent overthrow of the US government. I don't think this sort of thing is close enough to a terrorist threat to warrant someone being locked up or waterboarded, but I don't have a problem with someone being forced to explain his joke. This girl doesn't look like she's been thrown in any dungeons lately

The real terrorists and potential assassins aren't blowing off stem on facebook. I'm sure the secret service knows this.

It's a fact that Obama has been a huge supporter of the patriot act since he was in senate. Voted to renew it while on the campaign trail in 2008. I wish it wasn't but it's true :(
