You weren't kidding, fuck.

This man had a set of life experiences that made escaping into rural North Korea seem "like paradise."

Anaxagoras - 2012-12-06

I've seen previous pieces done about this guy, but thanks for posting another one. It's truly amazing what this guy went through.

Cooper is a good interviewer and 60 Minutes' stark style really captured the reality of an unreal situation

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-12-06

Yep. Hell on earth. If there is a god, we will be judged harshly for knowing these things and doing nothing to help these people.

Anaxagoras - 2012-12-06

It's not that simple. It's not clear what we could do that wouldn't make it worse, short of invading & setting up a puppet regime of our own. And, well, that has its own pitfalls.

I'm not saying we're completely off the hook, morally speaking, but it's not a solution with a simple fix.

If there is a God, he's running North Korea.

There's fuck all we can do about it because our brains are fucking broken. The same thing that makes us think the God of Abraham isn't a fucking monster and the paradise described in the Bible isn't a fucking nightmare is the same thing that keeps them from revolting.

How well do you think it would go over in America if some other country announced that Jesus had returned, but it's okay, they killed him. Congratulations, America, your long nightmare of an eternity of telling Jesus how great he is while he remains indifferent to human suffering is over!

It would require a GLOBAL condemnation of this to get it to end. That's just not gonna happen.

The liberation of North Korea would doubtlessly involve building shitloads of Nike sweatshops. Thousands of corporate executives would drop their pants and beat their meat the minute the news broke.

They would have to spend a generation coming to grips with the absolute freedom and horrific burdens of free will imposed on them by utopic Chinese society before they'd have any shot at the rest of the world.

It was disturbing to hear the part about how his moral compass was twisted in a way that the captors were seen almost as gods. I used to feel it was an exaggeration when I heard comparisons of Juche to being like a religious movement, but this guy's reality seems to give quite a bit of credence to it.
