So, does America have a genre equivalent to Japan's giant battle robot genre?

I hope it's murder mysteries. I think it would be awesome to discover that in every other country Jessica Fletcher has a backstory involving a demon curse because nobody can understand why she's constantly stumbling into murder plots.
